5th straight US Open, 34th straight win at Flushing Meadows and 13th Grand Slam.
Congratulations Roger, it's sure not over yet.
Murray now you can start thinking of a big career too!

First set sublime tennis, also the beginning of the 3th set was amazing.

I didn't expect such a beatdown in straight sets, but Murray played quite below average in my opinion specially in the last set. Also there where some points when Federer was playing on his old form, but in fact he's definetly taking back step by step his old & regular form. Well done Roger. :hatoff:

Glad you didn't show your muggish fh & bh shots during a whole match today, now mostly every ball goes inside the court, so that's a pretty good sign. :p

Similar pattern as against Djokovic.
1st set jesus Fed.
Then Fedmug decided to show up to keep it interesting, until the last game of the second set where jesus paid a visit.
Federer's server was utterly horrible at times.

He did it though, in 3 as expected! :worship:

Delighted for Federer to complete the comeback :D

Grand slam number 13 and 5th straight U.S. Open title, incredible stuff.

Very disappointed for Murray but he will have chances in the future. There wasn't really much he could do against the barrage of vintage Federer. Got a terrible call which cost him the break mid-way through the second set, that was the one opportunity he had in the whole match to get on top of Federer and apply pressure.

Well deserved victory for the Swiss though.

First set was as good as i've ever seen Fed play.
The other 2 sets were a bit more loopsided but still,Fed showed a much better level of play than what he showed during the year.

Federer played very solid, had a little let down in second set but in overall we did what it was needed. Pathetic first and third set from Murray. He tried with pushing in the first set and he was severely punished. Change of tactics in 2nd and it was paying off, he had 7 consecutive points on Federer serve and a long ball from Federer at 2:2 15:40 when he instead of stopping the point and challenged it he decided to play and Roger saved that game and never looked back. Amazing clutch play from Fed to clinch that second set. In third he was even jerking around with poor Andy until 5-0 when Andy woke up a bit but it was too little and too late.

its just :haha: to see so many bitter posters in this thread.

what did you expect andy to do against federer today...andy tried to push the ball like he has in the past against roger, and this time roger destroyed him. Andy is very talented but he needed to play a little smarter today to have a chance....roger was great today.

Roger was playing high risk tennis throughout by smashing fhs close to the line and holding his own on the bh side. He was never going to play a perfect match playing like that, but he got the desired effect and had enough highs to outweigh the lows. Thats the way you play on a fast court.

You think pete sampras played like this? Pete was even more deceptive playing like crap for whole sets except one game where he would break and hold serve throughout. Federer was fantastic today. some people have no clue of tennis.

Murray didn't play hard and didn't play well since the very beginning. This is not fatigue, this is lack of character. With all due respect to Andy, he needs his head screwed on straight.
Fed came out firing and scared the living hell out of him, the rest was pretty much cruise control except for one scary game in the 2nd.

According to the “Bud Collins History of Tennis,” Roger Federer now has played in 17 major singles finals and he is now two shy of tying Ivan Lendl’s record of 19 major singles final appearances. Federer is now, of course, one major title shy of tying Pete Sampras’ 14 men’s singles majors. The seldom-talked about most major singles final appearance record is as follows

MOST MEN'S MAJOR SINGLES FINAL APPEARANCES
19 Ivan Lendl
18 Pete Sampras
17 Roger Federer / Rod Laver

Murray didn't play hard and didn't play well since the very beginning. This is not fatigue, this is lack of character. With all due respect to Andy, he needs his head screwed on straight.
Fed came out firing and scared the living hell out of him, the rest was pretty much cruise control except for one scary game in the 2nd.
(quietly) I predicted Murray would fold if down 0-2. (proud)You try playing your best in your first GS final against a more rested and experienced opponent when you've had less than a day of rest.

Honestly, I'm not sure I understand this logic. Had Nadal and Murray been able to continue and finish their match on Saturday, the winner would have had to come back and play the next day anyway. At least this way Murray got to split the match up over the course of two days.

Not to mention (not that the USTA would have known this, of course) Murray was able to stop and recollect himself after Nadal got the momentum in the third set. I think it had a big chance of going five sets had there not been that rain delay. So again, the rain delay was to Murray's advantage.

Finally, I don't understand why the USTA would want Federer to win it anyway. He's not American, and it's not like Nadal is really unpopular and the USTA would want him to lose the tournament, necessarily.

SheepleBuster

Murray played two 2-sets matches in 2 days, tennis players arent used to that?
so he was tired from the first set where he got ass-kicked?

Just to add to that, I think Andy's problem was more mental than fatigue. I really didn't think Federer could dominate Murray like tonight but I think Roger wanted to set the record straight with Murray. Beating Roger in smaller tournaments doesn't mean much. Just ask Roddick. I think Murray will win a couple of slams though. He is one of the best hard court player in my opinion but not the most consistent one.

Murray could've troubled Federer. He did in the 2nd set and would've won it had that line call not robbed him. He was obviously flat and nervous in the first and just kind of not in it in the 3rd. Yes, Federer was playing very well, but had Murray played like he had against Nadal, he would've won or at least taken it to 5.

Disappointing final in terms of what I was hoping to see as a match. I was wanting a five setter, or at least four tight ones but Murray wasn't all there. I had the feeling it would go down how it did, as there was no way that Andy would come out firing against Roger like he had against Rafa. Murray can learn a lot from this and now that Federer is "back", I guess there can be no more excuses for any losses in the remainder of the season from his fans. Congrats on number thirteen, Roger. As I said in my last post (which you haven't responded to) I don't understand how splitting his match up over the course of two days was a disadvantage to Murray. He was so lucky to win US 08:
- he received the easiest draw from "big three"
- he had luck that he beat Andreev
- he played TOP 200 player in GS QF
- he had to play against exhausted Nole in semifinal
- order of play was always helpful for Roger
- he had one more day than Muzza to rest
- Muzza had an knee injury in the final

ATP was always on his side, but now even USTA is on his side. Shame.

I am not sure, but what's the requirement for a player to get his own Excuse-Whine-Rant Thread? A final or a Slam? At the moment it seems quite appropriate though.

No way. Murray needs a slam win, IMO. Nole didn't get his until he lost his first match after the AO.

Um... but it's Roger. He is back. All of that means absolutely nothing. He is one behind Pete right now. That is all that matters so any excuses will automatically be deflected and thrown back with the retort of a sentence including 'bitter rafatard' as the explanation. :D

- he had to play against exhausted Nole in semifinal
- order of play was always helpful for Roger
- he had one more day than Muzza to rest
- Muzza had an knee injury in the final
These aren't luck.

I never mentioned Rafa's achievements  I mentioned Rogers  :D

Oh, that's weak.
You're probably sad with Roger winning yet another hard court Slam, so I'll let you off the hook.
It'll be fine.

Whatever. Let's go on-topic, people. I guess if Murray gets his head in a proper place, he will win a Slam next year, both him and Djokovic are missing confidence at the moment, and if somebody wins a Slam, it should be Muzza.

holagirl56
09-09-2008, 12:51 AM
He was so lucky to win US 08:
- he received the easiest draw from "big three"
- he had luck that he beat Andreev
- he played TOP 200 player in GS QF
- he had to play against exhausted Nole in semifinal
- order of play was always helpful for Roger
- he had one more day than Muzza to rest
- Muzza had an knee injury in the final

ATP was always on his side, but now even USTA is on his side. Shame.

I think you're confusing Federer with Nadal.

MIMIC

Nadal had the easiest draw. The only seeded player Nadal played was Murray.

LOL HAHAHAHAHAH
this is just so funny from the haters...
cuz yeah.. nadal's half was just so demanding... so was his draw in wimbledon... he is wayyyyy luckier than fed.
everyone had to be 100% healthy and fit for roger to deserve ANY title.

yep... close down please... stupid thread

Congrats fed. No excuses, the best player won. I wanted to make this thread due to the excuses and arguments which will inevitably come out. There really is nothing to argue about people, murray lost to a better man on the night, end off.

This is also why i hate bandwagoning, small groups of people do it, making the rest of the player's fans look like idiots :p

So yeah, fed was awesome, but in losing murray does in no way become a 'mugpusher' or whatever. I dont think anyone on the tour, nadal included would have done much better tonight.

Federer attacked Murray today, something what Nadal didn't do saturday so excuses about Murray's physique is bullsh*t. It's just the way Roger played today, he crushed Murray in the first set then had his usual setback in the second, he survived some breakpoints and took the 2nd set with a sublime service break. 3th set was kind off a routine for Roger just like the Djokovic 4th set.

I think everybody who has negative comments should give some respect to Roger and also to Murray who had a great week and showed everybody he can be the best player Britain has had in the last 20? years.
Oh it's also funny how everybody is bashing Nadal now and saying Federer will win 3 GS in 2009, becomes number 1 again and the favourites for AO 09 and USO 09 are Fed,Djoko and Muzza and not Nadal :) but that's the beautiful thing called tennis,no?

As I said in my last post (which you haven't responded to) I don't understand how splitting his match up over the course of two days was a disadvantage to Murray. If anything it was an advantage, I would think. That way he didn't have to play a four or five setter in one day and then have to come back immediately the next day.
I agree, it helped him in terms of his match against Nadal. The only person to benefit from the whole thing was Federer though. It's undeniably helped him to the title, well done to him for taking advantage.

And Rafael Nadull fairly defeated by Andy.

Now, Bud Collins can eat something. This is what he said:

Murray is much more subtle than Djokovic, and I think he will give Federer trouble. He has a real shot, and though he will not have as much rest as the defending champion, with the match starting tomorrow night at 5 p.m., I don’t think this will be a problem. It’s his first major, but he has proved he can compete.

I’m not very good at picking winners, but I’m picking Murray.

So happy for Federer!!!!! Great to win the US Open after his bad year(by Fed's standards).
I'm not a fan of Andy Murray, but great job making his first grand slam final. I'm sure it will not be his last and I'm sure he will win many in the future.

Strange lack of appreciation to the USTA from Federer seeing as they won him both his SF and Final.

Silly play from Murray really. Way too defensive. Sure, it earned him the last two encounters but he needs to understand when Federer is on song his swift attacks can drill through any great defense on this surface. Federer played quite alot of short balls which could simply get drilled if he was playing against someone like Djokovic. Keeping Federer on the back foot, penetrate his defense step by step by constant deep hitting have always been the key to beating Federer. Murray constantly tried to played too smart, it would have worked if he was playing against Djokovic. He was hitting tactical high loops, changing the paste and great slices only to be countered back by Federer's own great slices and forehand. Murray allowed Federer to play his game was the huge downfall of his today. When you play Federer, you need to BANG BANG BANG out hit him which is lol easy to say but very hard to do constantly since JesusFed isn't stupid (but it's much easier now though since Federer's court speed is nowhere as use to anymore.)

Congratulations to Federer! Whoohooo! 13th Grandslam! Too easy! I hope he can play better again next year :) Great stuff!

G4.

you are truly deluded if murray lost due to fatigue or injury...pity that he couldnt get into the match...but seriously this fatigue excuse is beyond ridiculous. murray was hit off the court, it wasn't a war of attrition on clay against nadal.

but hey you aren't upset that federer won which is why u make all these excuses.

I feel for Murray fans. I think he deserves a grand slam as much as Novak. But Novak has his. Murray will probably need to beat Nadal again to win a slam and we all know how Nadal improves exponentially each year. It's going to be tough. No doubt.

One might have presumed that the hooligans would have chosen to take a brief hiatus from General Messages, but seeing as such isn't the case, try not to choke on your sour grapes.

Superb victory from Roger, now it's time to gather yourself and prove that you have what it takes to overcome the psychological obstacles which impede you from performing at a maximum level against Nadal.

Just another chapter in the history of our beautiful sport.

I actually thought this was the most memorable slam for Federer. Really. He was counted out by ESPN writers (Bonnie Ford, where are you know? She predicted a 2nd round exit!). I mean it's tough on Murray but the guy is young and will definitely win his fair share. Just let Roger win his 15 slams and retire and these guys can split the slams with Roddick and Blake.

dj_mercury
09-09-2008, 01:07 AM
had Murray played like he had against Nadal, he would've won or at least taken it to 5.
Nadal shots on hard are not as deep as those of Federer, so you have much less time to think about what to do, so you can't really compare these two match-ups.
