Andy should edge it as long as he's aggressive. It'll be interesting to see who has more confidence in the TBs.

A battle of MTF's most hated players. I have Roddick tipped to win this one in 4 tight sets. Djoko won't be getting beat physically at night or ran around or anything, he's just gonna have to deal with a barrage of aces and unreturnables. Faker or not I think he's exhausted and Andy is brimming with confidence/energy...as opposed to Robredo if Novak pulls any of his shit, Andy might rip his head off.

Federer awaits in the semis so it's a losing situation for whomever wins, IMO whomever wins will get spanked by Fed.

Roddick is infinitely fresher at the moment. I expect Djokovic to throw everything at him early on, going for lots of winners. Djokovic will most likely take the first set, but it should be all Roddick after that. Djokovic is simply not in good enough shape to win another best of five.

Vamos Rafa 01
09-03-2008, 09:46 AM
Well it's tough to say. Djokovic has plenty of time to recover(night session on thursday) so he should be ready to go.

As for the matchup, there's no doubt Djoko is a better baseliner, with a superior backhand. If he can serve good enough to get himself out of trouble, he'll be in a great position to win.

Having said that, I want Roddick to win, so A-Rod in 4. :wavey:

If ARod gets one of the first three sets, he'll take this match. I'm taking Roddick in 5. Four if his serve's really on and he takes the first set. Just don't think Djok can stay with him physically. Djoks only hope is to take this match in 3 sets, and I just can't see him breaking Roddicks serve that often.

I'd say Nole in 4. I don't think he will be all that exhausted, and Roddick is probably worse from the baseline than Robredo. Roddick can't return to save his life, and Nole has a pretty good serve. Nole will have to get used to Andy's serve, once he does that, I think he will prevail. I also think that if Nole plays his mind games he might get Andy to lose his nerves totally.

Hopefully it will be nice match :)

Halba
09-03-2008, 12:09 PM
watch for a recovered, spirited djokovic to unleash a brutal barrage of double handed backhands(DTL and cross court) to roddick. djokovic is not in his best ground stroke hitting form, but he is good enough for rod-duck who can't play baseline for poops.

sure roddick is going to play some amazing service winners/aces but when/if his serve comes off, djoko will reign supreme. djokovic in 3 sets, some tiebreakers. djoko is due to raise his game and he is itching to play federer on his best surface.

Vida
09-03-2008, 01:00 PM
really tough to see djokovic pass this one. he looked trashed and wasted against tommredo. im guessing Chilic match really took him off, the guy was blazing from all guns and the balls were heavy as hell. i think he said something about attacking the net or he will have no chance since his next opponent (andy) will definitely have more in the tank. if nole loses the first set he will go down since i don't believe roddick will blow it. he smells blood.

if, by any chance, djokovic takes the first with some clutch play, than he just might go further.

it would have been toss-up, but this way roddick 70 percent. gloom and doom for nole, but he's done good to win that 5 setter with chickenredo and take the medal at o.i. anything more at this point overfills already full mug of bear..

for Boredo to speak out about time-outs an all the acting perks from Faker was
expected and logical, but for Andy to comment on it, although he has a right to and he was lead on by a journalist, was sooo out of place, simply because it's very clear that all he wanted to do was down Fakey and enrage/provoke him, to kind of hit him from a safe place, since he's in front of home crowd/journalists, and he wasn't in the match so nobody can say sour grapes etc...very lame and bullylike from the duck, not that Fakey doesn't deserve all the criticism, but it should be from Tommy and media, not from a 3rd party.

i'm writing all this cause it will have a considerable influence on the QF
if it gets to Faker in a bad way it could very well be the thing that wins Andy the match
or if Novak is matured enough, he could use this in his favour to down Andy in 3 sets, in front of his home crowd.
will Andy's comment implode on him, it will be mostly on Novak, and his fitness.

Roddick to take on Djokovic and his '16 injuries'
After Roddick jokingly tossed out a few possible additions to Djokovic’s long list of ailments—“bird flu, Anthrax, SARS”—he was asked whether he believed the Serbian was exaggerating his problems.

“Either he’s quick to call the trainer or one of the most courageous guys of all time,” Roddick said

It's going to be tough for Novak to beat Roddick in a nigh match on Ashe. It's not as if it is Federer vs Roddick where some of the support would still go to a guy like Roger. Not many of the fans have been embracing Novak and Andy has been playing to the crowd well all tournament.

Really think some of you are overexcited about Andy's form. He isn't proving anything, baseline strokes sucks, only serve, and now the most nervous tennis player I ever saw (every now and then calling judges idiots and so...) started to play mind games with Novak who is mentally 10xstronger than him. I just can't imagine he could be considered as a favourite against Novak. And about Novak's fittnes, he still has over 48 hours just to relax and rest for this match.
About home advantage - think this is also overated. Yes, people will chear for Roddick, no doubt about that, they can make him fire up a little, but all the rest depends on Roddick abilities? And they are... hmmmm, not so sure what to say about them... ah yes - big serve. Big servers (and nothing more than that) win major tournaments all the time... Wright?
Also don't want to comment many mugs that have beaten Andy this year (he couldn't even beat Troicki - lol)...

This guy to win Nole? Really? That sound like a lot of fun :)

Federer awaits in the semis so it's a losing situation for whomever wins, IMO whomever wins will get spanked by Fed.

You really think Federer of this year can thoroughly beat either of them? Federer's and Djokovic's have been alternatingly unimpressive, Roddick probably looking the best out of all three -- but then again, he faced a mug Gonzalez who played right into his hands, so I don't know if that match is saying much.

I haven't seen any of Andy's matches at the USO so far, but it seems his decision to skip the Olympic Games pay off. He is always difficult to beat at the USO and it will be interesting to see how Novak has recovered from his last two matches.

Would be funny if Roddick turns his season around and wins the U.S. Open. He's been one of the most bashed players this year, especially after the loss to Nadal on grass, which in hindsight, doesn't look like such a bad loss now afterall.

Here's the part where Roddick comments on Novak:

Q. When asked about his injuries today, mentioning the right ankle as opposed to the left ankle, the other day ‑‑

ANDY RODDICK: Isn't it both of them? And a back and a hip?

Q. And when he said there are too many to count.

ANDY RODDICK: And a cramp.

Q. Do you get the sense right now that he is...

ANDY RODDICK: Bird flu.

Q. Lot of things. Beijing hangover.

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah.

Q. He's got pretty long list of illness.

ANDY RODDICK: Anthrax. SARS. Common cough and cold.

Q. Got a lot of things going on with him.

ANDY RODDICK: Sure.

Q. Do you think he's bluffing?

Scenario kind of bad for Novak, but...
Novak is anxious to prove himself asap to the world, Now here comes a nightmare opportunity: while physically not best, to beat Roddick, Federer(likely), Nadal/Murray in a row in about just 3 1/2 days in best of five at New York.
That would be too impressive. Worst case can be best case, who knows. Although not likely

Jimmy Connors is there. Will this help or hurt Andy? Can Jimmy cancel out the "Andy will win USO" jinx thread?

Someone want to tell me why the fuck we can't talk about these matches in a proper match thread? Bugs the hell out of me that moderators jump all over you if you try to discuss an ongoing match in here.

It really is. This is a tennis forum, yet we can't discuss the match in this thread. I would love it if someone pointed out the downside to us discussing the match in this thread.

We can say who we think will win, but heaven forbid we say "great forehand from Djokovic" or "shocking game from Roddick there".

Roddick in 5- I didn't think I will ever bring myself to root for Roddick, but this time is an exception.

It's not the fault of the mods if you don't follow the rules and obey them. When you make your own tennis board then by all means do what you please, but when you are on a board with rules it behooves you to stay within the rules. Rules apply for everyone and no one should be exempt. The mods only do their jobs and no one should criticise them for enforcing the rules.

Nobody is stopping anyone to discuss in progress matches. The proper match thread is located here

Bugs the hell out of me when people refuse to read the rules.
