QF: Rafito Nadal vs Mardy Fish WWW

This is gonna be a interesting match up. Fish is in the form of his Indian Wells tourney when he kicked both of Nalbandian and Federer's ass. And just for the record Nadal never loses to a big favourite on a HC slam ,just look at the previous losses.

US Open 2006: Misha Youzhny
Aus Open 2007: Feña Gonzalez
US Open 2007: Pics Ferrer
Aus Open 2008: Ali Tsonga

So I go for Mardy in 4 close sets :)

Rafa has never done well in the US Open so to be seeing him around still is a treat for me. He may go down against Fish ... I hope he does not.

If Mardy keeps up his level, and Rafa doesn't improve, this can indeed become an interesting match where it's surely not a given who will be the winner.

However, I expect Rafa to raise his level of play after today's performance - so my bet is Rafa - in three or four.

I'm sure Fish is really angry with Querrey because he's provided the match that Nadal was waiting for: tough, long match, being pushed and dropping a set. Then he recovers from that and wins quite comfortably in the 4th set. Just the necessary to make him fry the fish in 3.

I'm gonna go with Fish in 4, judging on their performances of late. Could well go in any direction though I think.

If Fish plays as well as the rounds before and even adds some fuel to rise to the occasion, Nadal is in trouble there if he doesn't bring 90% of his best hardcourt stuff. (Exception would be if Nadal happens to like the Fish match-up just too much)

The match could go either way. Fish has the game an firepower to blow nadal off-the-court ,together with the fact nadal played some long matches an may not have the necessary speed to "run everything down" for 3 sets. However nadal is mentally superior,.
Bottom line if Fish starts great and has the momentum ,he should see this one home.
Fish in 4. If it doesn't work ,,plan B keep the pig "out there" for as long as possible ,so then some-one else could come-in and finish the job in the next round.

Fish has had a fantastic year and could make it even better by taking down Rafa.

Nadal won't get another draw that falls so easily into place like this one anytime soon (but ive said that before :o) so he better not fuck it up.

Nadal needs to win the USO and take a well-deserved month off

No can do. He has Davis Cup in 3 weeks, so he'll have to start practicing for that on the clay in 2.

Unless of course you were implying that the Davis Cup SF in Madrid, on clay, against the USA doesn't count?...In which case you may be right.

Logically Nadal in 3 easy sets because Fish is your classic definition of a m*g, but logic seems to have gone out the window this USO so I say Fish in 4.

Hope logic comes back by Wednesday and this dosent happen.

In case anyone missed it, Fish's head to head against Nadal is 0-4, all on grass and hard court. Granted, those losses were not the Fish of 2008 Indian Wells or US Open, but they are losses, not even a set taken against Nadal. At least Querrey had won one of three sets against Nadal before today's loss, so his result against Nadal was not a surprise.

This match is different from the ones you listed. All of these matches were surprises for Nadal. Now, Nadal knows that he needs to raise his level and Fish is playing great. He'll come more mentally prepared. It won't be easy for Fish to make an upset.

If it's today's Nadal then Fish has a great chance. If normal Nadal shows up then Fish goes down in 3 or 4.

Tough one to call as Fish has returned to good form and fitness so could be a handful for Nadal in front of the home crowd. I think Nadal will have the superior balls in the crucial points though, so he'll most likely win by a similar scoreline to the Querry match.

My thoughts exactly. Just can't see Rafa lose this one, though can't see him have a cupcake with Fish (esp since its USO and Fish will be VERY confident after dispatching Blake and Monfils).

Im guessing it will be very hard match for both of them. Lots of running from Nadal and passing.

I really hope Fish wins. Rafito's "hardcourt" tennis was pretty mediocre against Phau and absolutely miserable today. It will be a sad day for tennis should Fish UE his way out of the USO.

edit: Can hardly believe that I wrote that last sentence. It's almost as hard as accepting that it's true.

Nadal in 4. Nadal doesn 't have trouble with Karlovic or Querrey, why should he have one with Fish. Fish is not a good mover and Nadal will pound his forehand to submission. Fish may get the first set before realizing his dream is doomed.

I think Nadal in 3 sets. Fish, played well against Monfils but Nadal is a better player.

I can't believe people even doubting Rafa. Rafa is just not going to give you that many errors and he will break Fish at least twice each set. So it should be an easy 3 sets but can't see it go over 4. Fish is just so overrated. Roddick wiped the floor with him at one of these slams so it just shows how much of a chance Fish has.

Rafa Nadal in 3. Remember Nadal-Gulbis in Wimbledon? Gulbis put the pressure on Nadal, and Nadal had to fight his way through to a sloppy win (by his usual standards).

After that he beat Kiefer in 3 before stepping up the gear to destroy Youzhny and annihilate Murray in front of his home crowd.

Rafa and Uncle Toni know that he needs to have a lot of energy for the semi finals and the finals, which is why he isn't going full gear at the moment.

Rafa will certainly step it up against the Fish and humble him in front of his home crowd.

Mardy Fish: "He wants to run guys down. I don't intend to let him do that. I'm going to come in - not necessarily kamikaze-type tennis, but I'm going to try to keep the points as short as possible."

The problem is, everyone would love to keep the points short against Nadal. Doing it is another matter altogether.

At the moment, the only person with the groundstrokes to take Nadal is Djokovic on a good day.

Fish said at his presser he is feeling fresh. I don't quite believe him. He played 5 matches in New Haven the week before US Open, 3 of which were three setters. Add to that US Open 4 matches although not that long and...
In contrast to Fish Querrey should have been way fresher. Querrey hadn't played since first round in Beijing. Way more time to prepare physically for the Open.

Nadal in 3 after a tight first set. On paper and current form this should be a tough match for Nadal but I think he likes playing Fish. Fish will have real chances only with a high first serve percentage.

Fish is playing very well but Nadal should be too strong for him with the confidence he has. I think Fish can take a set though and make Nadal work for the win.

Obviously Fish is in good form to have made it to the QF, so to say it's an easy draw and this point in the tournament is pretty lame. I've come to expect nothing less, though.

Mardy Fish is playing out of his mind at the moment. It reminds me of the time he played Indian Wells this year, making nearly every single shot he whacks. With the crowd with him, this will be an interesting match up.

I know that I already posted once, but Rafa's interview today made me rethink my position. He said it would be a tough match and that he'd have to play his best, so I think he'll eek it out in five. He is focused though and said that he is thinking about only this match, so he may pull it off in four tight ones. Either way, this will be a tight outcome and one that rides on Rafa's racket.

i feel mardy has the game to really hurt rafa. He can take the early ball and move in and finish off the point especially if rafa's hits short topspins that the fish can really flatten out and move in. Hopefully rafa finds that extra gear and stops fish's little pre wedding run in this usopen
