Congratulations with your 30th consecutive US Open win Rogelio :worship:
Even many predicted Steps to take down the Fedmeister, Fedex proven that he's back on track with a rocksolid performance, even his backhand was okay/good today!

Some stats;
Federer;
17 winners (WTF US Open, many more?)
only 9 UE's
80% first serve's was essential.

I saw the match and I thought Federer was OK. Stepanek was not consistent at ALL and was down right terrible at times. So the scoreline is just a combination of a not-so-good Stepanek and a "mediocre" Federer

Is he playing better than Djokovic or Nadal? Absolutely not.

After that "amazing" performance at the crucial game of the first set (4-3 and serve after breaking back in the previous game) with that 0-40 break from Federer, the outcome of this match was obvious. Stepanek level, true hero.

We don't know what will happen in the next match, or what will happen next year, and i don't really care right now, i'm just glad that i saw vintage Roger again for one and a half hour. Consistency had been a big problem with him this year, that BHDTL could easily go away again.

He looked *right* from his very first shot.

I saw the 2nd set and it was partially unreal what errors Stepanek made if you're holding him to his usual volleying standards. Federer played well, but there was plenty for Stepanek to do better on makable shots and volleys.

Right, everybody should first learn the MTF rules. An MTF tripe bagel is only when a player wins straight sets with the same set scores.

I disagree. If we ignore AO because of the mono (beatdown, beatdown, 5 setter, beatdown, beatdown, 3-st loss), he was awful in the FO final vs Monfils, and as brilliant as Rafa played in the final, he didn't force Roger into putting all those ball into the net or way long on the volley...

And, other than his Ancic match, he was never brilliant in Wimby. His match were B+, which was enough - but the BHDTL hasn't been right all year.

Well I don't think he played an amazing match, it was okay in parts and very good in parts, but he was finding some of his special showman shots out there in response to what Stepanek was throwing at him, which was a good sign.

Radek didn't play particularly well though, some poor volleying and seemed to struggle with his forehand at times.

Wally Masur, what an idiot for marking Federer a 6.5 out of 10 for this performance.

Federer dealt with what he was given comfortably, serving well and hitting nice passing shots while Stepanek couldn't find his best tennis meaning that he wasn't able to put Federer under significant pressure but it was always going to be difficult anyway.

Finally a decent-to-good performance from Roger, which I haven't seen anymore since the Wimbly final - and not much therefore this year either. :D

Fantastic serving (I'll just forget about those DFs as the aces and semi-aces quite made up for it), and WOW that incredible Backhand! I wonder where he had hidden it during all those past months...
Apparently our Rogelio got himself a set of new contacts as well. Three challenges in a row, and he was correct on all of them... :worship:

But one must admit Stepanek wasn't playing well. Too much shanks, too sloppy, and his MIA serve wasn't much of a help either. Was not that impressed with Roger's play...still missing way to many forehands...but, when you're playing one of the worst players ever in the top 50 (a.k.a. Retro-Darcis), it doesn't really matter.

I guess Stepanek only poses a challenge if there's a grass court he can roll around in while faking injuries. Steppa-time indeed.

That was really much better from Fed and a needed step up compared to the crap delivered the other day. Stepanek may have played subpar, but when Fed is able to cut the number of UEs he commits in a match it's tough for everyone to come up with a plan to beat him on HC.
Btw Nadal so far has been far from impressive, replying to the user still seeing Fed performance miles behind what Nadal and Djokovic have showed so far.

I guess it's a matter of perception... *I* have seen Roger playing like he didn't even belong in the top 50 for quite a while, and saw him do a lot better today, so that makes me conclude positive about this match - I guess you missed the Return of the Backhand, for instance?

Federer looked alright out there. Serve was pretty good, backhand was quite good, forehand was okay. Movement was about what we can expect at this point. If he can get a little more confidence, that forehand will start clicking. So basically if he continues hitting his backhand as well as he did this match, he should be in for a good run here.

Poor performance from Radek, but that is nothing new, he has the ability to shine in some matches here and there but thats pretty much all he is able to do. On the other side Federer played as good as it was necessary to clinch this comfortable. Except from getting a boost in his confidence(which is a good thing) I can't really assess him or predict his display in next matches. It is still a mystery to me.

yes, the biscuit may not like Roger, but she is far from a hater, just by saying that she was not very impressed with roger's performances, did not mean she is a fed hater, lots of people weren't impressed with nadal's performances, even when he reached no.1, many still said "the tennis is dead stuff", are they all rafa haters?

I'm not that type of person. I can admit it when a player I don't like plays incredibly well. Not with pleasure, but I can. Federer was playing OK , which is better than he has done lately. He's upping his level but I'm not using the adjectives 'amazing' and 'impressive' just yet. If that riles you up, I'm sorry. Maybe in a few matches I'll use ':worship:' and we can become BFF? :wavey:

I wouldn´t say Stepanek played badly, it´s just that Federer didn´t let him in the game at any point. That was a rock solid performance from Roger.

Well, not what I saw, Federer did not made much of a pressure on Radek who was practically unable to stay in rallies (he has nice ground-strokes) and he did not even do well in the area where he is very good: volleying. Therefore I said that I can not asses Roger's performance. Stepanek made it too easy for him.

Well, I missed the beginning of the match, so you may well be right. :p
Still, Roger seemed to be hitting the ball nicely, some great passing shots etc, so it´s going to be an interesting tournament!

Thank god the WORM IS OUT, GlennMiryni must be feeling pissed. :D Federer again, didn't really play his best tennis out there, just going through the draw comfortably.. he even said he didn't play his best tennis in the interview.

How is it, by the way, that Federer playing his C game still beat's Stepanek at his prime when apparently this Federer is past his best and is a mug?

The worry is that Federer has put in some excellent performances this year only to play poorly in the following matches. He was awesome against Santoro at the AO for example, but then that Tipsarevic match was obviously not a good effort.

1 fluke win in Rome and people thought Stepanek had a chance

Better tennis and a bit more power on his shots than recently... but Radek gave him the targets and the rallies were short

need to see if he can hit 3 solid BH's in one point rather than 1.

Don't know if it means the old Federer is back but I liked what I saw from Fed in that match. Not JezusFed all the way but JezusFed is still alive.

sad to see the better player lose. But the giant killing run of the lucky swiss will end when he faces the fury of igor's forehand.

Fed is gonna win this thing guys, he is winning all his matches practically without any big effort, even allowing himself to experiment with the likes of Alves:rolleyes: He is looking in a dangerously improved form and he always plays well in slams...so never discount an old dog, he still got fire in his racquet
