He should have won easier, even had chances to win the fifht set 6-0 as he had bps in all Simon service games ,anyway he find a way to win, he'd had not two months ago.

Very, very tight match. Could have gone either way. Del Potro still on course to play Muzza in the quarters.

Amazingly at times Gilles was just too aggresive. Everytime he tried to take the ball on he would just end up hitting it right into Del Potro's hitting zone. It was much more effective when he was trying to bait Del potro into the net keeping it low and short.. Bearing in mind he is 6-5.

His 1st serve % was horrible, if he had gotten more in he would have won - he out aced Del Potro by 6.

That sucks. :o:o And now he's back into Tsonga's and Monfils' shadow. He better do something before the end of the year. :o

Huh? He has to hit like 10 forehands every point to win it. He puts a lot into them, but there's a lot of top spin on them. It's a safe shot, rather than a penetrating one most of the time.

France 1 Argentina 1 today...everyone leaves happy (or maybe not -->me)

the rub down helped i guess. maybe not the highest quality but the drama was there and the fans were really into it. Gilles had a sloppy game to go down the break after he had the momentum. congratz del potro. it was his match to win or to lose.

DelPo still climbing on ranks :) way to go! I fear his fitness might betray him!

 Safe shot? If someone is retrieving your shot that means that your shot is slow? And do you think that if the shot is with top spin it is slow? And apart from that he does hit his FH very often very flat. Have you watched him in first 2 sets, or in his previous matches here or in the last month and a half ?

I've watched him a lot. I watched the entire match tonight. I'm sorry, but you can't say it's the fastest forehand on the tour when he has to hit about 10 of them to win a point. He only occasionally hits a flat. He hits it hard with a fair amount of top spin.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good shot, but it's safe. He usually goes up the middle of the court with it. I don't see his forehand as a huge shot. It's a weapon because he's consistent with it and he can flatten it out when he needs to. However, it's not huge. It's a hard shot with a lot of top spin. That makes it safe. If it was that huge, he'd end every point within 4 shots. It just looks huge because of how much he puts into it. The fact is Simon put 90% of them back to a good length.

The more the top spin you use, the more control you have. The flatter you hit, the faster it goes.

That doesn't mean you can't hit very fast shots with top spin.

Del Potro can hit both very fast and flat forehands or heavy top spin forehands. There, the difference between fast and heavy balls.

And apart from that he does hit his FH very often very flat. Have you watched him in first 2 sets, or in his previous matches here or in the last month and a half ?

true.

No, it didnt show today, but he flattens his forehand A LOT.

He didn't even play that well in that match and Fed really handed it to him. I am not saying that Simon played badly tonight. I just think he is good as a counterpuncher really but did not do too much to beat Del Potro. He was gonna let Del Potro beat himself which it almost happened.

Great match, with a lot of hard fought rallies between both players. This was probably my favourite match so far this US Open. That point at 4-3 in the second set TB was ridiculous from Simon - it felt like Del Potro hit the equivalent of three winners but Simon still got back into it and finally turned defense into offense. Del Potro seemed like the slightly better player for most of it but Simon competed so well.

Really, I was pleasantly surprised at Simon's agressivness, whiptastic serves (though a low 1st server %age, sadly), there's definitely more to him than just push.

But DelPo was the better man yesterday, not in doubt

I got this Simon's quote from ESPN... apparently he had been trash talking a bit before the match:

"I know he's playing good, but he has nothing unbelievable in his game," Simon said. "He's not hitting winners every time, so I have the time to play my game, and even if he's a good player, if the match lasts four or five sets, I think I'm better than him."
