I'm starting to think Safin just likes 5 setters so he can win them and keep his record good.

that actually was a good match, OK maybe not in the first 2 sets but hey, I like both players and they played well. The foot fault rule.. arggh it exists but its so rarely enforced its insane, the call should have been changed! Good on Safin for bringing out the office ref, that really is a obsolete rule!

A routine win by Marat.

Haha, congratulations to about three quarters of this board who called the scoreline.

Well done Safin, yet another match he wins going the distance. :)

That was a tricky one for Marat! So glad he got through! :worship:

He has to play more concentrated against Robredo.

Thought for sure he'd lose it (his mind and the match) after that stupid foot fault call. Good on him for keeping it together in the last set.

In all seriousness, the fast pace on Safin's groundstrokes ended up sealing the match for him in the fifth set. Spadea just couldn't get himself into good position in many of the rallies. There were definitely some powerful shots coming off of Safin's racquet in the deciding game, regardless of his tactics. This was nothing new, of course.

Some entertaining segments:

1)A particular exchange between the commentators in the third set. (This may not be the exact quote, but it's close. And yes, this actually was said.)

-Jimmy Arias: "What is Spadea thinking out there?"
-Commentator #2: "I don't think there's any thought at all from Spadea. He's just hitting shots."
-Arias: "Yeah, he's too busy thinking up a rap or something."
-Commentator #2: (*giggles*)

2)Arias: "It's like looking in a mirror for these guys. It's like they're saying, 'Three balls, and I'm just gonna let something fly.'" Brutal honesty from Arias.

3)Safin, when ranting about the somewhat controversial foot-fault call in the fourth set, "F*cking D*ckhead," among a variety of other comments.

4)And finally, Spadea was flagrantly strutting and rapping to himself after a successful challenge on a very close call in the fourth set.

Me too, big time. Way to hold it together Marat. So glad he pulled it out. Thought he had it in 4 when he was up 2-0, 0-30. W is a W though..

LOL @ Marat calling the umpire a f*cking d*ckhead.

Although he was speaking to the chair umpire at the time, he may have actually been referring to the judge who called the foot fault. He said it loud enough for the chair umpire to hear it and for the camera to pick it up, but I'm not sure if the line judge heard it too. It was tough to tell for sure, though, because he was ranting so quickly and randomly.

Entertaining stuff, nonetheless.

Said it was tough with the wind and because Vinny played well, fast. Said the foot fault argument was unfortunate because they were wrong (drew laughter from crowd). Said the tournament official has probably not read the rulebook.

Credit to Spadea for hanging tough, but this was Marat's match to win or lose. As bad as Marat's movement is, Spadea's is worse. Marat will hopefully remain calm enough to brush Boredo aside in a quick three, though it's more likely to go the distance.

I should've known there was a foot fault involved when he lost the 4th set :p

my favorite part was when Marat broke out the spanish. I know he will go to bed thinking he was absolutely correct (johnny mac couldn't believe the rule really existed either, complaining about it even after he was proven wrong). I was fully expecting a meltdown but the good boy pulled through. And even though going the distance in the early rounds is nothing new for marat, i was still pulling my hair out. oh well.

Well, if it weren't for the 5-setters, he wouldn't have 2 slams. Then again, if it weren't for the 5-setters...

Can you believe Vinny actually had won the only other match between them?

I'd really like to see Safin's reaction after he lost the 4th set the way he did. Anyone with a youtube clip?

safin could do some damage here... by the short bit i saw he was looking good by set 5...

all the guy ever needs is some decent match time to get his match rhythm on song and he's a shoe in for any qf out there... look out i say, cos after 5 sets with a steady spadea he wont need to warm up for 3 days...

Entertaining match-broken racquet's, furniture, swearing, antics, you name it... It even had a decent portion of good tennis followed by a lot of suspense until the end.
