I honestly don't know what surprised me more--Tommy getting defeated by Young or the fact that he didn't seem upset by the loss

When he knows that he didn't play well ... what more is there to say? The less this stupid loss affects him the better, I'd say.

It was a stupid loss but Tommy has won all his first rounds since April. And L.A. is just a MM tournament. Another early exit in Washington or New York would hurt a lot more. I hope we won't see that.

Kind of behind our backs, the draw already came up (http://www.leggmasontennisclassic.com/upload/394.pdf).

Come on, this is perfect. Qualifier in the first round, and the rest of Tommy's quarter is as good as "empty".

And del Potro ... yeah, he won back to back titles recently, but both on clay, and other than that his season hasn't been particularly remarkable, especially not on hard court (although he's still in in LA).
Btw, do you really "only" need two ATP titles to climb up to no. 24 in the ranking?!

Now is the time to come up with the goods, Tommy. Come on!

In general I agree with the comments before - looks like a good draw. As long as Tommy is doing better than in LA he should be able to achieve a good result here.

Will be interesting to see if del Potro's going to play in Washington, since he played the LA final today (and won - wth?). Sure, better to think step by step ... but it will considerably weaken Tommy's half of the draw if del Potro isn't playing. Then again, maybe he's trying to win back-to-back titles again. Not this time, dude ...

Lugburz
08-10-2008, 10:59 PM
Yeah I watched whole match, although I don't like him I must admit that was perfect performance ! But that's anything what he will get from me since this is Tommy board :D So,we shouldn't care if that guy will play or not ;)

Yeah, just like LA. Even for quarters, it has to be an evening match. Americans need to lobby for changes to betting laws, than we'll see tennis covered as well as in Europe ;)

Juan defeated Andy Roddick on a hard court in L.A. So make that three wins in a row. Plus Juan says hard courts are his favorite. I watched him play in L.A. on TV and I was very impressed with his tennis playing ability

Congrats you know more about the guy than I do :p I have seen his name in Tournaments lists, but I know nothing about him at all  I think I could take a guess at what country he is from, but since I'm not completely sure I won't make the guess.

I only know what the ATP page tells me. ;) But at least the name is not completely unknown to me.

Looks like there's already been played a first round match, and Mahut would be Tommy's next opponent in the 2nd round. Doesn't seem to like this guy, never won against him. Oh well ...

I know I put "We aren't expecting anything" in the thread title, but to have to have a 3 Set Match in the 1st RD  And you know those 3 Set Matches can't help Tommy's shoulder any :scared: Well at least he did make it past the 1st Rd this time, but I'm afraid I'm not very confident about this Tournament

thefly

I think if Tommy cared right now to keep his matches as short as possible he wouldn't play at all. He goes out there to compete, and you can't do that if you're constantly worried about your body, and I don't think Tommy is at the moment. And this is not women's tennis. The top 150 are considerably close and every one of those guys knows how to play tennis and if they are fearless and play well everything is possible. So every vitory is a good one, and I think in Tommy's case, after losing this first round last week, it is even more important that he kept his focus and shrugged off this second set and completely regained control in the third, so this may mentally be even worth more than a straight set vitory. And I expect a lot against Mahut. I ALWAYS expect a lot, because this is Tommy Haas and I'm a fan.

Exactly !
at Mae,it is odd to say that those 3 sets would affect his shoulder or any sort of injury, because that was typically tennis match in 3rd sets...But completely other thing is saying that Tommy should have won quicker,he should but I think that's nothing to do with the injury problems or his shoulder,so as I mentioned I don't like to invoke evil by saying consistently about his shoulder ;)
And totally agree ! with thefly last sentence,We share exact feeling about it ;)

finally a win over Mahut :) Falla is doable too...I hope we'll see the first semifinal in 2008

"I'm happy to have finally beaten him," said Haas. "I had lost to him in the two previous times we played and today I feel like I played a good match. I was mad after getting broken when serving for the set at 5-3, when I hit three double faults, but then I was able to win the set in the tie-break. I feel I'm playing very solid from the back and when I put my serve in I know I can win most of the points. (atptennis.com)"

Really positive talk in the interview. Not sure whats going on with the double faults though. He double faulted on break point twice against Nadull too at Cinci.

Tommy has had 3 surgeries on his right shoulder. Since he is right handed I'm sure those surgeries have taken a toll on Tommy's ability to serve well. Plus our dear Tommy is a bit of a "head case" on the court so that doesn't always help him either  Auf geht's Tommy for later today :D

Yes I'm well aware of his shoulder surgeries. They don't have much to do with his double faulting though. Hes been double faulting at critical times more often lately, probably because hes down on confidence.

Tommy will play the 2nd match after 8 p.m. CET. The first one is Del Potro vs. Isner. So Tommy will probably play around 10 p.m. CET...Let's hope for the best!

A station will appear there at 15:00 (CET (?)) but I guess there will be no livestream for Tommy's match as far as he plays after 10 p.m. CET

Ah, good to be back, and all the better seeing Tommy still in and playing well. That was a nice text message yesterday morning. ;)

Interesting that he plays Falla ... hth is 1:1, both matches last year; one weird loss in Miami, a time when Tommy was playing pretty well, but interesting enough, the last match also happend in Washington, and Tommy won easily.
In my book, this is once again a match in which Tommy can only beat himself. If he's focused and plays well, this should be over quickly. I mean, this quaterfinal is by far Falla's best result this year. 'Nough said.

Anyway DelPotro is leading 1-0 in sets...

Well, if del Potro makes it quick now maybe we'll get a glimpse ... btw, can someone stop this del Potro guy? Time for a stronger opponent after all. That alone makes me want Tommy to win so badly. To put it mildly, del Potro has been very lucky so far with his opponents, on hard court at least (Roddick played awfully in the LA final). Time to really prove himself! ;)

Yeah, that was excellent, stunning how he fought back, that really rocked. Tommy seems to finally have his focus right this week.

Now this semi will be interesting. Could be a test for Tommy where he stands now; but I for one have no idea where del Potro actually stands. They obviously never played before ... but I'm confident that Tommy can be the one who ends this guy's run if he builds upon his wins here and stays focused. And hopefully we'll have some moving images tomorrow ...

Come on, one more and the USO seeding becomes a good possibility!

Since it's not that important an article, and somehow just fits in here, I thought I post that here; a little funny occurrence according to ESPN, after the second round:

Fourth-seeded Tommy Haas also advanced, beating Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (4), 6-3. When the two met in the locker room early in the day, Haas showed his appreciation for second-seeded del Potro's recent streak. Haas licked his finger, touched it to del Potro and made a sizzling sound to acknowledge del Potro is on fire.

"Right now he's just full of confidence," Haas said. "When you win 15 matches in a row, he must be feeling pretty good about himself."

:)

But now the funny times are over, Tommy. Time to get really serious ... ;)

Hi guys, it took 20 minutes for my crummy AT&T Edge network phone to load these pp. and let me make my 1 sentence post, so I wasn't able to post again!

Tommy is going to have to play much better tomorrow. I saw the end of the Del Potro match and he is very, very sharp. He has excellent control, hits hard, and is strategic--doesn't make dumb mistakes. He is very impressive for a 19-year-old. If Tommy plays his best and keeps his head together, it will be an excellent match. Tommy played nearly evenly with Nadal recently and if he can do that, he can compete with Del Potro too.

As for today's match, at the beginning when he got the two breaks, Falla kept hitting lines with his serves and was hitting groundstrokes very well--very deep. He had Tommy on the defensive a lot, and Tommy just wasn't hitting the ball cleanly--you could tell not only by the way the balls left his racquet but also by the sound. He had trouble with low backhands, and his inside out forehand was wild for awhile. However, his serve kept improving. At the beginning, Falla was taking it early so he was either hitting return winners or Tommy was getting aces or service winners. Tommy seemed to keep hitting the balls right back to Falla rather than moving him around. But soon Tommy got into a better rhythm, and Falla began making mistakes. I think Tommy got in his head with the first break, and it was downhill for Falla from then on. Tommy looked much more lively after he won the first set 7-5 and played well in the 2nd set but against a better player, he'll have to take it up a notch.

The crowd was 80% behind Tommy throughout the match.

After the match Wayne Bryan interviewed him. It was hard to hear due to the poor speaker system, but I think he said his health was good and as long as he felt he could keep up with the big boys he intended to keep playing. He thanked us for our support of him and said DC was one of the most beautiful cities in the US and possibly in the world and of course we all agreed with him on that one! I believe Wayne said that Tommy's semi-final will take place in the afternoon tomorrow and the other one will be in the evening session.

The weather has been very nice all week. Usually during Legg Mason temps. and humidity seem to get close to record levels. But this year it has been about 85 degrees F and low to medium humidity--much easier on the players and more fun for the fans. It was more humid today but rain was light and delayed only the Del P.-Isner match. Tomorrow sporadic thunderstorms are again predicted.

Hope you liked my report.

Wow, Roddick indeed out, but still the second seed against the fourth not in the night session? Well, I don't complain.
I think Tommy showed in Cincy that he can rise to the occasion, and I still think del Potro is no that strong, and just took advantage of the weak fields (which he's done pretty well, though). He plays well, but I have the impression that his opponents pretty much let him play his game, at least from the little I have seen. Furthermore, he himself stated that he starts to feel a little tired, so ... Go Tommy! :)

Yeah,Tommy for Del Potro will now be huge threat ! Everyone says that it is gonna be difficult for Tommy, but I am now putting my views from Del Potros eyes..I can see that he is scared about this one :D And now making some excuses that he is tired or sort of,dude I wouldn't complain with those 19ages he has...Also,Tommy had pretty exhausting past few weeks, and he is 30,not speaking that he is tired when he has to face Del Potro! I mean,if Tommy wins,I think that will nothing have to do with Del Potro's being tired, but we'll see it tonight anyway ;) So Auf Fuckin' Geht's Tommy ! Can't wait for match to begin

BTW,ESP2 made officially that today 7:25pm CET will live coverage Tommy's match vs DelPotro..

I second that, thanks Squotis. First I wondered how you actually watched the match, but then it hit me. ;)
I hope it's true that Tommy will play first tomorrow, for I guess that means we'll see him. But I'm sure that will depend on who will play the other semi, and Roddick is not on the best way right now ...

Thefly, I live in the DC area. I told myself if I got my work done , I would reward myself by driving to Legg Mason for Tommy's match. I didn't get my work done , but I went anyway and Tommy rewarded us all! :D

ps you're welcome everyone! I'm going to watch today's match on TV.

Mae, I think maybe you are a little pessimistic - Del Potro is excellent, but if Tommy plays his best and is steady, he definitely has a chance. His greater experience should help him.

At the Wilson booth (?), Del Potro was signing autographs around 5:30 or 6 PM yesterday, and there was a very long line of fans. Maybe he will have a tired wrist today!

PS The weather is superb today. It is cool (for this time of year here), low humidity, sunny. There were some mild gusts of wind this AM but nothing the players aren't used to. If it stays this way, the players and fans will have a very nice afternoon.

Btw, I hope there will be some other streams up today, like yesterday. These TVU ESPN streams haven't worked for me in recent times; what about you? Any other ESPN2 streams known?

I really don't know,if you asking me...Because I don't have ESPN channels...I am sure that Eurosport 2 will be showing the live match in about 30mins..I am going to watch it there as I don't have any other channel, don't know about the streams on the internet..

Nothing works for me. Maybe this one (http://www.tvchannelsfree.com/watch/4477/Eurosport-2.html) works for some of you; doesn't for me. Oh well. Guess I have to wait for the downloads - if the match turns out to be worth it. ;)

Nah, it remains black after it indicates that it successfully buffered and should be playing.

Haas already blew two challenges, so he prefered to only complain about Potros' serve instead of challenging, since he wasn't 100% sure. :D Haas in his usual good swearing mood. ;)
