I think it's a pretty good draw for our Andy - there are some players who could provide a test but who he would be expected to beat, right through to possible 4th round with Wawrinka, when it gets a bit trickier.

No real banana skins early though - Melzer....Lopez possibly...Andy should really not lose to either of those unless he plays atrociously...

Yeah I think it's okay on paper.

Hopefully a nice quiet drama-free straight-sets first week so he's got plenty left for battles in the second week :)

I see Mr Lu is in Andy's quarter, though it would be a 4rd round meeting and Mr Lu would have to survive Lapentti and then probably Youzhny.

Interesting.

Andy's comments:
I thought it was pretty decent. I didn't lose my serve the whole match.

I thought he played pretty well for about a set and a half. He was hitting his forehand really hard and making me do a bit of running.

It was a decent test and I came through it pretty well.

It was quite tight, the end of the second set, and then I think once I won that, it was going to be a long way back for him.

And obviously I felt much more relaxed after I won the second set and started to return a bit closer, stepping a little bit closer and coming forward a little bit, and being a bit more aggressive.

scoobs
08-26-2008, 09:41 AM
I didn't think it was *that* much of a test, to be honest - any issues he had seemed to be more the odd little loss of focus and poor shot selection - when he got it right Roitman had no answers. It was pretty comfortable feeling right the way through. I've seen enough Murraycoasters to know when to worry and when to relax :)

Relieved he got out of that in 4 sets.

Llodra was a very tenacious and effective opponent and Andy didn't deal with it mentally as well as he might have.

But he did get the win and that's what goes down on the scoresheet, not the bad tempered exchanges with Bernardes or irritation with the linecalling.

Hopefully it's not taken too much out of him.

I didn't see any of the match today (I couldn't get into the stadium, the lines were ridiculous :() buuuut, when I thought the match was still on, I went into the stadium (the "tunnel" part) to get a drink of water, and Llodra walked past me with his bag and everything. He didn't look particularly happy so I assumed Andy won, and that he'd be coming out soon. I waited about 10 minutes and was just about to leave when Andy came speed-walking past me. So I got to see him, but not his match. :p

Andy was on Grandstand so no Hawkeye.

Same again tomorrow - second match on vs Melzer.

Andy and Ross lost in doubles today but they took the top seeds all the way to a final set tiebreak.

Peter Fleming said he watched the match and Andy was returning like a god :) - and clearly wanted to win.

I just hope it didn't wear him out too much and he's pumped and energized for his singles match tomorrow.

Andy's reaction:
He was playing awesome, hitting the ball so hard and flat.

It was so tough for me to get a rhythm, but I felt after the third set, the momentum was with me.

My fitness is something I've worked so hard on. I've got a great team with me and I'm really enjoying working with them.

Well I think Andy uses this book not only for autobiographical purposes but also to set the records straight about some accusations (being anti-English, sexist) and I think he also throws in some criticism of the media  Still, I think it would be an interesting read.

Murray's post-match comments

It was the first match I've played on that court. I've been looking forward to it for a long, long time, and to play like that made it pretty special.

To play like that was obviously great, it gives me a bit of extra confidence.

The last (Grand) Slam quarter I played (at Wimbledon), I got killed and (Rafael) Nadal played way too good for me, but I feel like I'm playing better now.

I'm definitely going to be more rested this time round and hopefully play a better match. I think I'm playing well enough to win.

Juan was not anywhere near 100% physically in that Match. A knee problem that he needed the trainer twice for. I think that helped Andy a lot because I'm afraid if Juan hadn't been hurt Andy would have lost the Match. Er. . . how about C'mon!?

Andy http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0098.gif You did what you had to do to win. Horses for courses, and tactics to suit the opponent. I have to laugh at the haters, "he won't get a point against Nadal playing like that". Er - yes, he's aware of that, he doesn't play like that against Nadal. Though he is not a favourite in that match-up, I think he has a decent chance of a win. H2H's can be overturned. . .

I'm nervous too - but whatever the outcome, it's fine, he will be in more SFs and even if he loses this one, he will learn to win them. I still think we haven't seen Andy Murray at the peak of his tennis powers - I think he's going to get even better in the next couple of years and by the time he's 23 or 24 he'll be playing his peak tennis. He still has so much he can improve. Frankly, one match aside, he hasn't even played his best tennis here, sometimes not even close, and he's still in the semis.

Whatever the outcome or scoreline in this match I'm sure he's going out there to give Nadal the best fight he can. What will be will be. Nadal's not #1 for nothing and the guy loses to hardly anyone these days. Sooner or later, if it's not today, Andy will work out what to do to beat him. So it's all good. At least Andy has shown this tournament he's not afraid to get to the back end of the slams and his game and fitness can get him there too. That's still a big question answered.

I cannot believe the scheduling. All it took was a simple look at the weather forecast

But no, they wanted as many hours of tennis as possible so they didn't have Andy/Rafa start at the same time as Roger/Novak. They don't see two players, a court, a ball, and careers. They see dollar signs all over the place.

scoobs
09-06-2008, 11:01 PM
Perhaps - but in all fairness I dont think this match would have finished even if it had started at 11 - the way the play was going it seemed like it was going to at least 4 sets, if not 5 - Andy was starting to decline in his level and Raf is a break up in the third and I could see that third set going and Andy getting into trouble in the fourth too so...not convinced it was going to finish today whatever happened.

Just have to suck it up and see what happens tomorrow. Andy has put himself in a strong position but Nadal will not hand this over, he is going to have to come out strong again and take this from him. And he has a break deficit to overcome first.

The thing is, there would have been nothing to lose (except money I suppose) starting both semis at the same time. But that's life, I guess I have to just accept what happened.

It's a sticky situation but that will just make victory sweeter for whomever the victor will be. I predict trouble for Andy. I agree, Nadal will not hand this over, especially not after the regrouping I'm sure he's doing right now.

Oh yes I expect trouble too - you don't count out the world #1 before the umpire calls Game, Set, Match - especially when that #1 is Rafael Nadal, one of the grittiest competitors that the tour has ever seen. Andy will have to come out and do what he's been doing to stand a chance of winning because you have to expect Nadal will come out better tomorrow than he has today.

I really hope it's not career threatening. I don't think it would be, seeing as Andy is still young. Not everyone develops as quickly as Nadal did.

Andy took big strides this summer by beating Djokovic, winning a MS title, and making a GS semifinal (or maybe even a final, or maybe even - okay, I won't get ahead of myself). I think he can walk away from all that feeling pretty good about himself.

The semi might have a bit of an effect on him, but it shouldn't be too damaging.

Anyway, he hasn't lost it yet. ;) He can still win!

I doubt it would be mentally career threatening if he lost - Andy doesn't strike me as that sort of a person - he views adversity and setbacks as a challenge to him. All that would happen is that next time he would absolutely determined not to let it happen again.

I'm trying to look at it that, it's all for Rafa to do out here right now - Andy can't lose this match until Rafa wins this set and then the next one. There's pressure on Andy to win this one but there's also pressure on Rafa to turn this around and stop the Murray juggernaut. Plus - yes, Rafa may come out fresher and sharper today but there's no reason why he didn't come out fresh and sharp yesterday, but he didn't - except perhaps the fact that he might just have hit the point in the season where he runs out of mental gas - a little later this year. That's what it looked like to me yesterday. And if that's the case, well, 24 hours of feeling under pressure isn't going to ease that.

It's funny how huge things have got for Andy, so fast...

It could be about to get a whole lot bigger.

Call me a bandwagoner but ive liked him ever since Cincy 06, I wanted him to lose in straights today so rafa could have the golden slam on the line for australia, but now hes up 2-0 im more at peace with him being in the final, hes always been the guy i believed could even out the top (instead of only top 3 so only 2 face each other in the semis).
i REALLY want him to shut rafa down in straights, hes been returning better just some stupid errors here and there, I really want rafa to lose now to spare him the embarassment of being walked all over in the final, but also i think andy's game matches up perfectly to win the title... btw thats a bad thing when i believe someone can win, cos they usually dont unless i doubt them but look at it this way:
Federer is gonna come out blasting: andy knows how to defend against the biggest hitters even better than marcelo rios ever did, plus hes got weapons, he doesnt have to out hit federer inthe begginign when he just goes for broke. If in the first set he stays close and keeps the rallies longer to make federer start thinking, thats when the guy starts messing up, then his best shots desert him then murray can attack.
2 when things get heavy, its really only been federers serve that has saved him in this tournament, much like the way its been the last year or so, its the serve, and thats the biggest weapon, Andy is hte best returner out there, he can get enough serves back to make the 1st serve percentage of federer drop, and he attacks return well enough that federer WILL have to go for more on the serve, so he CAN win it...

My question to the murray fans is, do you think hes mentally ready to win a slam, especially with a pro federer crowd, with all the history (5 wins or watever) behind him and all the fans on his side, plus the weight of expectation on murrays shoulders? I know Nole obviously was too weak last year, but is murray the same?? Im not sure cos Murray actually won those 2 set against rafa and so easily beat Nole in straight sets in 2 weeks, once was in a friggin Masters final which is pretty amazing considering the way NOle owned him its quite a turn around...

Put my mind and ease and say, yes, im gonna say no, cos im a jinx so the opposite should happen, i dont think murray is mentally ready to win a slam, least of all the uso, least of all with the way his matches have been pushed back so hes gonna be physically and mentally drained from the match with rafa if and when it goes the distance. (Please tell me im wrong)

I'm so nervous, I'm still thinking whether I'll watch the match live (at 4 am here) or not. I don't know if I can take another heartache (with my no.1 favorite player losing yesterday to Federer ) but at the same time it will be worth watching live if Andy wins.

Come on Andy

We're probably being a bit melodramatic, aren't we?probably..

what i think i meant is... to lose from 2 sets up is something that might stick with him (as it does when anyone loses a big GS match from that position)

altho, doesnt mean he wont ever reach a GS final in future or anything i'm sure

anyhow, GL today Andy!!

Corey Feldman
09-07-2008, 04:09 PM
i'm sure if he strikes the ball like he did yesterday - he can get that 1 set he needs

and i dont buy this thing of Nadal being tired and thats the only reason Andy is leading - Andy was just too damn good for him

Let's hope Andy carries on from yesterday gets the job done.
It is going to be tough, but Andy made Nadal look ordinary yesterday.

wow.

I don't have the words for how impressed I am.

I think when Rafa Nadal looks over a net and sees someone who's not scared of him and believes he can beat him, it counts for a lot. I think that counted for a lot today because even a break up in the fourth, Rafa couldn't get it done, Andy just came back again and looked implacable. Superb rallies, wonderful tennis at times, high pressure, high stakes, high risk stuff and he pulled it off.

Incredible stuff. Awesome.

Man, I'm on an adrenaline high that won't come down for hours.

I was also very, very excited. I left to eat dinner when Andy was down a break, figuring I'd rush back to catch the fifth set...I came back and it was done! Of course I missed the best part, but I saw some pretty impressive stuff yesterday and even today, when he was losing. I'm a Rafa fan so that might have taken away from this victory a bit, but truly, for me, I love when great tennis wins, no matter who it is playing the good tennis. So it's nice that I'm an Andy fan right now. :p

To copy and paste what I said in another thread:

Barring all nerves from Muzza, I give him the advantage tomorrow. But I don't think nerves should be barred. I remember Novak in last year's final. :help: So I'd say this is very up in the air: one player leads the head-to-head, including on hardcourts, while the other always saves the best for Slams, also seeming to thrive on the boost he gets from best-of-five situations. For me it's hard to predict.

Congrats, I dont know if he can win the final if hes mentally ready yet after that dip he had in the 4th with the 7 break pints he lost at 1-0 then going to lose his serve and lose alot of easy points, swiss boy is in far better form and obviously will hold serve much more easily, But F@#$ Murray has such a great game, that defence he can hang with rafa, and he returns so well... Im still gonna say its a LONG LONG LONG LONG LOOOOOOOOOOONNNNGGGG shot, how can he handle the pressure of being the first brit in the open era to win a slam? especially against the guy who said that murray's game was unevolved in dubai since their previous encounters and he would burtn out soon.

Oh wait no, heres the biggest thing, nobody has ever won a slam taking out the no1 and 2, worse yet hes gotta do it back to back on the stages where they play their best, semis and finals....

He has the game no doubt, i dont see anyway for him to lose in a best of 5 on hard courts if this were indian wells or soemthin, But not a slam final, the game counts for a lot less, its about mental and physical fortitude, mental more than anything especially in ur first final

I'm practically blown away by Murray's run at this USO. Against Nadal, where he had a 0-5 losing record, he empowered himself with self-belief and won in quite emphatic fashion. He said that his aim was to try and win this tournament, and I believe that he can, as long as the magnitude of the occasion doesn't get to him in the final. I will be over the moon if he achieves that feat. Good luck, Murray!

Tough match today Andy, Roger played really well the vast majority of the time and had clearly done his homework - he had a plan of where to attack today and he was ruthless in his execution of it, especially at the end of that second set.

Disappointed, I really thought he might do it. It's not really surprising though, he looked a bit overcome by the situation at the start, and worn out by the battle to beat Rafa. I thought he played really well the second set and should have won it.

Still if you had told me at the start of the year that he would end up in the USO Final and #4 in the world, I would have been ecstatic. So I am now ecstatic, in spite of the loss.

Being such a big Federer fan it's hard for me to feel to crushed about this loss - especially because of the manner in which Muzza brought himself to the final, in his previous matches. Impressive indeed. :) Jankovic lost the Open to Serena as her first GS final, so Federer felt he had to make Andy follow suit. No shame in Murray's Open really, except that the final could have been a bit closer.

But there seem to be plenty of Fuzza Fans here. :)

Anyone catch what Andy said to Roger at the net? I didn't hear it but they seemed to have a nice exchange.

Anyone catch what Andy said to Roger at the net? I didn't hear it but they seemed to have a nice exchange.

Basically congratulated Roger on his year. Though he said it funnier.

Q. Would you tell us the gist of what you said to him up at the net at the end of the match?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, he told me that it was a great tournament for me, and I said that, you know, I agreed with everyone that he's had a terrible year (laughter.)

Making the semis of Australia, final of the French, the final at Wimbledon, playing one of the best matches of all time winning a gold medal, and obviously winning the US Open.

I told him that he had, you know, a phenomenal year, regardless of what anyone said. I had a lot of respect for him, and that was it.
