This is a weak field Tournament where Tommy could do a lot of damage. However, having said that it now seems like when Tommy is in Tournaments with weak fields he seems to either get sick or that shoulder flares up again

Interesting draw. Let's hope for another meeting with Roddick (and for another Tommy-victory ;))

4th week in a row, no?

Yeah, not the greatest competition, but that could be a pretty early clash with Andy. Hoped he may be higher seeded.
Still, a lot is possible. Playing these first rounds after playing on par with Nadal must feel pretty easy ... ;)
And Young is also a lefty. :p

Btw, did they reduce the players field due to the Olympics?! Never seen first round "byes" for seeds at these kind of tournaments before.

And yes, I think they did it because of the olymipcs.

Well Andy has either been hurt or has been playing awful as of late. Tommy has defeated Andy even when Andy wasn't playing so poorly. I still think if Tommy stays healthy and keeps his head in his Matches he can pick up some points here.
Of course, a win would be nice; but that may be asking too much right now ;)

Well ,of course step by step this time...First is Young who can be very dangerous but I think Tommy really can handle that one...Again,it will be nice to see him play ! From 5 tours in which he is expected to play he has 4/5 in his pocket for now, that is terrific and Washington next,so he can reach that famous 32 seed...Let's hope he can do that ! Fingers crossed !

I actually expect him to win that one, barring any injury problems hopefully. Cilic did it while playing far from the best expected from a talented 19-year old, no reason why Tommy shouldn't. The recipe for winning over Roddick for some time now has been return it inside lines and play. Out-playing Roddick after the return shouldn't be that much of a problem as it stands now, that forehand he used to maintain the upper hand after a good serve hasn't been seen in a while ;)

ONES TO WATCH

TOMMY HAAS will attempt to
reclaim the Los Angeles title after
missing last year’s tournament. The
30-year-old German has won 11 of
his past 12 matches at this event,
titling in 2004 (d. Kiefer) and ‘06 (ld
Tursunov) and reaching the 2nd RD
in ‘05 (l. to Malisse). Overall, he has
a 13-3 lifetime record in Los
Angeles, including a QF result on
his event debut in ‘01 (l. to Malisse).
The No. 8 seed this week plays his
1st RD match against American
teenager Donald Young.

Reads pretty good. What a record. And Tommy is the only past titlist, it appears.

I think the name of this Tournament has been changed. I saw on a Live Scoring Site it was listed as the Mercedez-Benz Cup. Countrywide was a company that really got hurt by the home loan mess here in the U.S. So they probably couldn't sponsor the Tournament this year. Anyway it is the Tournament in L.A. so I don't guess the "official" name really matters anyway

Go Tommy!

I would be very surprised if Andy Roddick plays this tournament. His history is not to withdraw if there is any way that he can play, so when he withdrew from a Masters series event, you know there is something really wrong. I don't think he would want to jeopardize recovery by coming back too quickly, especially not on a smaller tournament (smaller than Masters series).

Nice to see there were so many people up late last night. Or early this morning. Whatever.

I'm glad now I didn't stay awake. I was really shocked by the result. I read Tommy played pretty badly (at least he said so himself), with lots of UE's on the forehand. I don't know ... not the right time for "one of these days". I can't imagine whether it's lack of motivation, pressure, or just fatigue. This performance doesn't fit, after going out against people like Davydenko and Nadal (especially considering this last match).
Who knows. Maybe this many tournaments and all that traveling in such a short time wasn't so good, after all.
Now it's again west coast the the east. Let's see how that's going to work out ...

Well, the match is just some hours old, and it's wednesday already. So, yes, he will have some time to acclimatise in DC.
But the thing is, he basicly just arrived in LA. Now it's back into the plane again. Can't be good.

But in the end I guess that's all just alibi excuses. He should be pro enough to shrug that off and defeat someone like Young. Yes, we all can't imagine how all his troubles have truely affected him and where exactly he stands now concerning not just his game but also his tour routine, so all this may still be a factor not to be underestimated. But ... well, you could talk this to death. I guess we just have to wait and see what happens. ;)

I guess we just have to wait and see what happens. ;)

Really good post! I also think that's just excuses, which makes us to suffer less.He really should have won.Maybe we do have some excuses but I haven't heard any from Tommy for now.So 'til then we can relax.
Washington next, really don't know what to expect there as I already had big expectations about LA,
so I think it is good to see him play in Wash after all..Auf Geht's !

Yes I remember earlier in the thread we were all talking about him playing Roddick and defeating him  I guess that is what the players mean when they say take one Match at a time! But if Tommy keeps having results like this against players like Young I look for him to retire  I just don't think he will want to put up with that much humiliation

All I have found so far is a quote from Tommy that said "Sometimes playing someone for the first time can be difficult".
No joke Tommy  Nothing about being sick or hurt that I can find now. But that quote didn't sound like he was too upset about the Match  I would like to hear more from Tommy.
