Cincinnati 2008: Nadal to become #1, but let's try to get #1 this week!

I have been told that Cincinnati's Draw is out (Thanks Metis ;-)

So I am starting the Cincinnati thread. Nadal section of the draw is down below ... Djokovic is again in Nadal side, but ... who cares? :)

I am confident Nadal will collect enough points in Cincinnati to be crowned #1 on August 18th (if not earlier but that depends on RF). It is all a bit complicated with the scheduled compresed and regulations that state that only 18 tournaments count towards ranking ... But to cut a long history short. 18th of August is the expected date in which Nadal will be crowned new king of tennis.

And rightly so.

every aspect of Toronto  except now he gets
Misha AND Blake, but who's to say they will even
get there... anyway, this is definitely a
great time for tennis, the new #1, I like the sound of that :yeah:

:wavey:What is the MTF - SOP, if any, regarding fan blogs.

I arrived in Cincy last evening and will the here for the week of the tournament. I'll try to posts some photos and occasional thoughts regarding the activities I see. Most of my interest is Rafa but there are some other players I follow.

Should I start another thread, just post pics in "Hot Pics" and keep my comments to myself, or what is acceptable. (It seems some are familiar with the tournament blogs and pics I posted to rafaelnadal.com):confused:

I'm going with a R16 loss to possibly Youzhny. He can't keep this streak up forever, and performing well at Cinci after going far in Canada has never been easy for any player. The courts are similar to the US Open ones aswel, very quick. Anyway, I don't care about Cinci, he has nothing to defend and he badly needs to get rest to avoid burn out. I almost wish he'd skip it to keep the streak alive.

His draw sucks monkey's balls. I hope he can get past Youzhny. I still haven't forgotten that painful trashing. If he does manages to beat him, I say he'll reach the semis.

Foxy
07-28-2008, 10:41 AM
Who the f*ck is Youzhny?
I am more concerned about Ferrer.
On another note I certainly think Rafa is capable of playing on fast and low bouncing surfaces. If he is aggressive enough I don't see how opponents would return his deep angled groundstrokes with so much spin and pace. He just needs to find the rhythm.

He just needs to find the rhythm.when they filmed right behind the players in Toronto, I was hugely impressed with his flat forehand. It just skimps the net .
Of course, the spin fh is there enough, but I'm liking how much he's flattening it!

Hum ... let me try to think ... Ok, I saw the draw. Rafa is pretty hot right now, improved so much on hard, knows what's coming up for him. But since anything can happen and Rafa has nothing to defend in Cincinnati ... but could be tired ...

... I go with a QF (but hope he wins :p)

And the strangest thing is he could potentially improve in so many areas. I adore his desire to try and improve as much as possible and beyond.

I'll make my prediction for Cinci early on wednesday.

Agreed and me too, I am fascinated by his desire to improve. It is a source of inspiration.
Regarding my prediction for MIT, this is perhaps the most difficult prediction of them all. Lot's of factors to consider: 1. Proximity of being able to reach #1. 2 Surface 3 CURRENT WINNING STREAK! 4 Draw

Too many factors to ponder. I may not be ready until just before the match starts! ;)

Talking about the winning streak. Dear Rafa fans, are you aware that the clay court season had been scheduled properly (i.e with a proper rest between Barcelona and Rome => Nadal would had won) then the streak would be:

5+5+5+5+7+5+7+5=44 and counting

44 is only 3 short of Guillermo Vilas record!!

And that if Nadal had withdrawn from Rome (as he should!) his streak would be:

5+5+5+7+5+7+5=39 and counting

Just 2 short of "Mr Perfect" Roger Federer record. ;)

Anyone dreaming that this could go on in Cinci?

Isn't Nadal already world No. 1 when Federer lost to Karlovic?

Last year, Federer won Cincinnati and has 500 points to defend and Nadal only managed to get 5 points.

When Federer lost to Karlovic, he has lost 425 points. Now he has only a total of 6180. On the other hand, Nadal will have at least
6425 after beating Haas.

Can anyone prove otherwise?

Nadal Within Reach of No. 1 Ranking

MASON - July 31, 2008 - World No. 2 Rafael Nadal moved closer to No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings with a 6-4, 7-6(0) victory over Tommy Haas to move into the quarterfinals on Thursday night.

If Nadal wins the title on Sunday, he will break Federer's streak of 235 consecutive weeks at No. 1. The Spaniard would become the 24th player in the history of the ATP Rankings (since 1973) to hold the No. 1 position and the third Spaniard to accomplish the feat, joining Carlos Moya (1999) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003).

A title would give Nadal 6,730 points to Federer's 6,680 next Monday. If Nadal reaches the final, he will become No. 1 on Aug. 11. With a semifinal here, Nadal will become No. 1 on Aug. 18. The only way Nadal can't become No. 1 in the next three weeks is IF he loses in the quarterfinals here and Federer wins the Olympic gold medal AND Nadal does not reach the Third Round or better at the Olympics.

But for now, Nadal will be making his second quarterfinal appearance in Cincinnati against unseeded Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador. Lapentti has beaten Spaniards David Ferrer, the No. 5 seed, and No. 10 Fernando Verdasco, in the last two rounds. The No. 89th-ranked Lapentti beat Verdasco 6-3, 7-5, to reach his first ATP Masters Series quarterfinal since Miami in 2002.

Watch live matches, highlights, interviews and more at ATP Masters Series TV

In improving to 3-0 lifetime against Haas, Nadal broke in the opening game of the match and won the set in 50 minutes. He saved two break points in the second game.

In the second set, the 22-year-old Spaniard squandered two match points at 6-5 and double-faulted back-to-back points to lose serve for the only time in the match. He then dominated the tie-break by winning all seven points to secure his 31st match win in a row.

"Well, probably I didn't play my best match, today," said Nadal. "I had some mistakes. The movement was so-so, so I have to improve the movements if I want to play better tomorrow. I am
happy because the important thing is to win in these moments. It's very important to win matches when you didn't play your best. It was an important match for the situation."

Nadal, who has been No. 2 every week since July 25, 2005 (158 consecutive weeks), raised his match record to an ATP-best 63-7 on the season, including 29-6 on hard courts. He knows the top ranking is within reach.

"Well, right now I know I'm in a good position, not because Roger have to win everything from here, from Olympics to US Open," said the Mallorca native. "I think if I win tomorrow I going to be No. 1. If I win tomorrow, in two weeks I going to be the No. 1. So it doesn't matter if I lost in Olympics in first round and Roger win, no? So tomorrow is going to be an important match."

Was anyone else bothered by rafas movement today? he looks like hes taken a real beating, I really think rafa will only win this match at most then pull out of the semis or something, I should hope so, especially if he has to play gulbis or if nole gets through nole will be confident again so he would be tough (unless he really struggles through), for some reason i seem to believe that Lapentti could win cos hes on a confidence high like Ferrer/monaco last year, but then i remind myself that rafa is playing better now, even today when he was off, than ever before, heck even on an off day like today hes probably better than him at 80% in 07 (they used to claim that rafa at 80-85% isnt as good as roddick at 60% or federer)... so at the least i think he can gut out a victory to secure the number 1 spot but I dunno if he really should continue the tournament, he needs some rest, he couldnt play the full clay schedule how the hell will he be able to play an even more packed hard court schedule?

^^Don't worry much, dear. I also thought his play was not that good. But then I thought, it's definitely better than last year.;)And again, don't worry. Rafa will get better, for sure. :D

I'm getting nervous guys, in just a few hours Rafa could have that #1 position sealed. It's been a long hard slog, often feeling much like chasing the end of a rainbow, always in sight, yet always unatainable. It'll be the beginning of a new era in tennis for sure, but I couldn't be happier for Rafa that it is finally happening!

I've been thinking about Nadal finally becoming number since last nights win over Haas. I went to sleeping comforted by the thought of it becoming reality and today at work I would have random thoughts of him doing it. When it finally happened I felt like bringing out the Kristal or La Grande Dame.

So my fellow Nadal fans if you would kindly raise your glasses and toast with me. Today is a great day for us and for camp Nadal. It's inspiring to see someone actually reach their personal goals- I'm happy for us all.

I'm very happy for Nadal. It more of a quiet satisfied feeling. I can't think how he and his camp feel. My guess is that they want to keep it low key, and concentrate on the next match. Djokovic! That's the match I want to see. I'd like to see Nadal wind up wining and being Number 1 on August 4

Vamos rafa you prove that good things come to good people who wait... Now i just hope that you stay injury free and can win the USO and Aussie open within the next 2 years, to seal your claim as the best of your era and one of the goats. Please please PLEASE rest and recover after cincy, and dont get too hung up on being number 1, at least you will be for ONE week AT LEAST so who cares if you pull out of your semi (please please please you look tired I dont wanna see you gettin injured not with the chance to make history at the olympics and the uso).... come on Rafa boy pull off a miracle. I know ur best tennis is better than anyone at the moment but dont overexert yourself, althought it would be cool for you to win cincy then the next 2 tournaments you enter and you believe in taking every chance youve got an never givin up so ur not gonna pull out :(

Have already posted this on GM in the match thread, but wanted to repeat it here:

Congrats to Rafa and his fans :)

Somehow it would have been strange when a player with Rafa's results wouldn't have been #1. Now he can't put the pressure on Roger anymore and has to lead the field himself. It will be interesting to see how he deals with the situation, but I guess he will be very realistically about his achievement and the waiting challenges.

Nadal had quite a bit of pressure to hold his number two position and defend all his points earlier in the year when Djokovic was nipping at his heels. Every year he's had the pressure of defending all his points on clay. I think he's quite used to pressure.

The only problem I see is how Nadal will find ways to defer to Federer and call him the best player. :) :)

I think there was no question but that Nadal is running on fumes. He needs a rest. And even though I wanted him to bear down and win the match, I can see that it's normal to have a bit of a let down after achieving such a long worked for goal. Djokovic played very well, but I could see from the match how Nadal, if he's playing well, could beat Djokovic on a fast hard court. I'm optimistic about Nadal for the rest of the year.

Congrats to all fellow Rafafans :D
Rafa has finally reached #1 spot :woohoo: we've been waiting for this a whole eternity. But now I'm extremely happy he's on the top. I hope he can hold that position for a long time. Too bad he couldn't reach Cincy's final he could be the first player who has reached the finals of all 9 Masters and break another record.

Congratulations, Rafa!! :bigclap:
At your age you've achieved alot in your field of occupation. You're a star already. I wish you to stay injury free, keep evolving and win many more titles. :hearts:

I think it was a good move to not push it to win. Nole needs some points so he can catch up on no. 2 now Federer. And it leaves a few breathers for defending points next year after all these wins in the past months. Vamos Rafa!!! Good
tournament!

As for waiting for that eternity for the no.1 spot. Well two years I've been following Rafa and catching up to Federer when he had a start in age, it's just a phenomenal achievement. Being no.1 is something. Overtaking Roger Federer is something else. What an absolute VICTORY!!!!!!!!!

Foxy
08-03-2008, 10:16 AM
Yeap, it is not that painful loss for me too. Rafa could easily defend his number 1 spot until at least february and even march with a critical period after paris indoors. But now he really needs rest. Tough tournaments to come.
Good luck at the Olympics, mate! :p

Foxy
08-03-2008, 02:18 PM
Rafa possibly could win the US Open Series Race as nobody from the top guys could overtake him now because they all will play the Olympics and would need rest before the US Open. Except of course for Roddick, Fish and some others who need two tournaments wins to overtake Rafa. It all depends on the remaining US Open Series tournaments - LA, Washington and New Haven.
