Poor field for a Masters event, 7 Top 30 players cancelled...Hope for a good draw which comes out tomorrow..C'mon!! He has to defend 75 points...

yeah, he has to defend some points in Toronto, and a quarter final in Washington, I think. Everywhere else before the USO, it's just a win situation, which is pretty cool.

Btw, does it somehow matter that the calendar is different this year? I think last year Washington and LA were before Toronto and Cincy, no? How does that work?

el tenista
07-18-2008, 08:16 PM
Yes, it matters. For example Nadal's points for Stuttgart will be removed next monday because last year, the tournament in Stuttgart was 1 week later. If this is the case with the tournaments you mentioned, Tommy will lose the points before the tournaments.
So in general the points are only counted for 52 weeks, no matter if the tournament will be played later on.

And all the Tournaments were moved up in dates due to the Olympics. While it isn't the strongest field it is certainly much better than Indy was!

Yeah sure, would have been ridiculous if it had not been better ;)

But how is it possible to defend points from a Masters Series event in a "normal" event? Do they simply balance the points, no matter that you have to do better in a lesser tournament in order to reach the same or more points? If you see what I mean ...;)

So if I get that right, Tommy won't have to defend any points next week (and neither had to this week), but instead has to defend the Washington points from last year in Cincy in two weeks, and his Toronto points in LA the following week?

Fair enough. :)

el tenista

I'll give you an example:

Let's say, there is a Masters Series event from July 10 to July 17 2007 and an International Series event from July 18 to July 25 2007.
In the next year, the calendar is different: The International Series event which took place after the Masters Series in 2007, is now played from July 10 to July 17 2008 and the Masters Series is played from July 18 to July 25 2008.

Let's say the player reached the Semis at the International Series torunament in 2007 (110 points) and won the Masters Series one (500 points). In 2008, he enters the Interantional Series event and defends his semi but loses 390 points because in 2007, there was the Masters Series tournament at that time. After that, he wins the Masters Series again and the 390 points will be given to the player because he gets 500 points for the win and had to defend only 110 points from the International Series one which took place in 2007 at that time. So far, understood? Hope so :)

According to your thoughts about Tommy's points, I can tell you that you are right. He has no points to defend next week but in 2 weeks he will lose his quarterfinal points of Washington (50 points) when he hopefully plays the Masters Series in Cincinnati...So through winning some matches in Toronto he can improve his ranking but will go down in August when he loses those points of last year.

Gotcha. :)

So this week's points are already a plus, next week is also an opportunity to gain a lot, as is Washington at the end ... then again, thinking about that, it doesn't really matter where the points are won, it all sums up equally anyway, right? If I win 50 point here and don't defend 50 points there, it's the same as if I don't win 50 points here but defend 50 point there ... :p

Anyway, especially the Masters count of course.

You're right ;)
But this week you have to think about that:
The Entry Ranking counts following tournaments: 4 Grand Slams, 9 Masters Series and the so called "best of other countable tournaments" which is the International Series. Here, the player has the chance to count the 5 best International Series tournaments of one season. In Tommy's case, before Indy, his 5th best of the other tournaments was a Round 16 in San Jose in February 2008 (l.to Isner  ). Through the QF in Indianapolis, San Jose won't count anymore because the QF in Indy counts 40 points.
So you have to calculate as following:
825 (Tommy's score last Monday) - 15 + 40 = 850

Maybe this you already said, but just to ask:

He had nothing to defend. But due to the "Best of 5 other countable tournaments" rule, not the whole 40 points count, only 25. Look at my last post, there it is explained.

Indianapolis QF: 40 points
San Jose 2008 (Haas' 5th best other tournament): 15 points

40-15=25

San Jose will be replaced by Indy ;)

No ;) As you can see at the link I posted, Washington started on July 29 last year. So those points will be gone when he plays the Masters Series in Cincinnati...Kinda strange this season due to the Olmypics which mixed up the calendar!

He has to defend these points in Cincy this year. If he doesn't, these points you see there in the list will be gone.

yeah but I think that in cincy he will have to defend the points taken from last year which is r16?

Like stated above, the actual week of the year counts, no matter which tournament is played. You just look at the points lost/gained in a certain week.

Lugburz

It is really difficult to follow that ranking system...I know the basic things about it,but that calendar thing really confuses me...

el tenista
07-19-2008, 12:31 AM
Oh yeah, this system is really complicated to understand, I needed a bit of time as well...

@Lugburz: The system works as follows: You only have to defend the points you gained 52 weeks before. It does not have to do anything with the tournaments, just with the time they are played!
An easy example: Tommy wins Toronto this year ( :D ) and gains 500 points. He gains the full 500 points because 52 weeks before he played no tournament! However, on August 11 2008, the R16 points of Toronto last year will be gone because this was the time where the tournament took place last year... Understood?!

Are you talking about the Magical Glass? Well, you can run the program, and when you activate it you get a window of optional size that magnifies the desktop wherever you point it. The refresh rate is also pretty decent.

Really Tommy has been hurt almost as much in his tennis career by his temperment as he has been by his injuries (with the exception of all those shoulder surgeries). But then without that temperment he wouldn't be Tommy so I guess we have to live with that as his fans ;)

Definitely. If I take a look at the 1st round matches of Toronto, Tommy vs. Moya will be the match which will interest the public mostly. Other aspirants for the first two main courts are:

Marat Safin vs Sam Querrey
Guillermo Canas vs Robin Söderling
Gael Monfils vs Igor Andreev
Frank Dancevic vs Mario Ancic

So I think Tommy will play on Center Court or Court 1 ;)

BTW: On www.atpmastersseries.tv it says that live streaming will begin on Monday July 21st :) So we'll have TV coverage right from the beginning of the tournament.
http://www.myp2p.eu/competition.php?&competitionid=&part=sports&discipline=tennis&allowedDays=2,3,4,5,6
There will be many livestreams for this event.
Frank Dancevic is from Canada. And in fact is their #1 ranked male player so I would say there is a good chance they will find a nice place for him to play ;)

First duel since 2002. Moya has a bad run but he's still dangerous on HC. I'd like to see a match against Davy, would be the the first meeting out of a Grand Slam.

Well I like Moya, but if Tommy is all right he should defeat him. Moya is older and, of course, being from Spain more of a clay court player. I just hope Tommy is all right.
Really Tommy has been hurt almost as much in his tennis career by his temperment as he has been by his injuries (with the exception of all those shoulder surgeries). But then without that temperment he wouldn't be Tommy so I guess we have to live with that as his fans ;)

Moya is only a little older than Tommy and has done well on hard courts (e.g., Indian Wells) in the past. He is also currently ranked more highly (#27) than Tommy (in the 40s). So I'm sure that Tommy will not take him lightly. Go Tommy!

Well, we should keep the fingers crossed that all matches scheduled today will be finished. Otherwise, there is the danger that Tommy won't play on one of the two main courts ;)
For example Nicolas Kiefer is the only one in the Main Draw who plays on Court No.1 and not on Center or Grandstand. That's a bit stupid for me as a German...
BTW: Do they have floodlight in Toronto?

Didn't this Tournament used to be an indoor Tournament? I remember some years back Andy Roddick getting taken out in the 1st Rd and I'm sure they were playing indoors  Moya ranking is only higher because he has been playing while Tommy hasn't been doing that much playing. And I'm sure Tommy doesn't take anyone he is playing lightly. I had thought Moya was closer to the mid-30's in age, but I could be wrong about that. I have heard some retire talk mentioned about Moya, but how true it is I don't know.

Moya plays awfully right now, doesn't look really comfortable. If not for his numerous aces in this last game, we would already be in the second set.

Oh well, I don't complain.

EDIT

Nice and easy. Still Tommy's return game is lacking, he has to be more aggressive. Maybe he just doesn't push himself, since Moya doesn't offer much of a competition right now, but he has to raise it up a notch ...

Simon just manhandled Donald Young. I think Simon must like these North American hard courts! He is deceptively fast.

Tommy will need to stay mentally tough against Davydenko. He plays a lot like Simon (but better) - gets a lot of balls back, with pace. The commentators said Davydenko has just taken off 2 weeks, unusual for him. I am not sure whether that means he was vacationing, whether he hasn't practiced or simply that he didn't compete in tournaments. Go Tom!

Since winning the title in Warsaw in early june, Davydenko only played the first round in Wimby, and he lost there, in straight sets I think. He hasn't played at all since then, and before that of course only on clay, with his last hard-court match played in Miami.
And he had no first round match in Toronto. So this will be his first HC match in a loooong time, while Tommy seems pretty comfortable again on the court; this HAS to be a little bit in Tommy's favor ...

Well, that sounds like a lot more than the 2 weeks the TV commentators noted! Tommy definitely needs to take full advantage of any rust Davydenko has--for example, by serving as well as he did today and keeping the unforced errors to a minimum.

I mean, from Davydenko's perspective, this draw is pretty bad, think about it, playing your first hardcourt event in a while, and then having to play Tommy Haas in your first round?! Not so big a surprise, is it?

Ginepri and Ferrer are on court now, but the Grandstand is still wet. That guy with the dryer isn't doing his job very well ... to the left, dude, to the left!

I never give up hope. And yesterday the TV people said D vs. TH would be a featured match. They may be taping it for later viewing.

Yeah, I think for a free stream the bet365 ones are really as good as it gets. Good colors, good speed, and the ball is good to see. And the screen is also way larger than these at bwin for instance. Big enough for my taste. But if you need it bigger, remember the Magical Glass ... ;)

Well, sure the quality doesn't get better by enlarging the window; but when you go to the "settings" and set the "magnifier size" to your screen resolution (for example 1024x768) and set the zoom to 1.5 or 2.0, you can watch it pretty much full screen, and sit back in your armchair or whereever ... ;)

Magical glass? What did I miss?

Check this post (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?p=7364866&highlight=magical#post7364866). Try it out, I'm curious what you think. ;)

But if your screen resolution isn't very high, I don't think it's necessary, since the window is well sized to begin with. If your resolution is higher than 1024x768 or something like that, though, it may be worth a try.

The dryers are back, and it looks a little brighter right now. Yet, the centre court footage shows another pretty dark cloud front in what I think is about north; and the wind is coming from north-west ...

EDIT

Great, a little army works on the centre, and some dudes obviously on a holiday job or something dry the grandstand. Terrific.
