Jesse Huta Galung is more than likely to be defending his title here.

Robin Haase will play.

Nederlands nummer één Robin Haase in TEAN International

Someone at the tourney seems to think that Vicente hasn't played for an entire year, and has now started his comeback

Someone hasn't been paying attention :haha:

Haase is out:

He is still struggling with a right knee injury. Even though he is already practising again, he's not yet fit.

I guess most players ranked 300-1000 prefer playing futures where they can collect points instead of trying to qualify to a Challenger where they will have very few chances to grab a point.

Hope you enjoy the main draw matches :)

It's a horrible field, both in terms of ranking and in terms of favourites of mine that are playing. It's the same for the women's $25K ITF. But I'll probably go tomorrow.

For Tuesday the weather forecast is horrible, so I'll see what I'll do.

Crugnola beat Oudshoorn 6-2 6-2
Pretty nice match to watch! Oudshoorn started really nervous, looked like he was impressed by his opponent or something... He had a little chance on Crugnola's serve in the beginning, but most of the games were easy for Crugnola. Hope he'll go to the main draw, so... good luck tommorow! And I liked (the match of) Cervantes too, so same to him!

Monday Report:

I arrived at around 11:45 when the first matches on the four courts were already underway. The venue is much the same as last year. It's a very charming tournament, with stands for centre court and Court 6, some seats for Court 9, but Court 4 is a bit isolated and you have to stand behind a gate to watch it. The people here are very friendly and attendance was great as well. The temperature wasn't, but you can also watch Center and Court 9 from inside a bit.

Also met edgars here, which was very nice :yeah: It's definitely nice to spend some time with other tennis fans at tournaments like these.

Estrella Cabeza Candela ESP [2] beat Daniëlle Harmsen NED [WC] | 6-4 7-5

I wanted to see a bit of Cabeza Candela, as she has a good reputation on clay and is, on paper, one of the favourites to win the title here. Both players were really plagued by the heavy wind on centre court, which didn't help the quality of play. I only saw the end of the second set, when Harmsen had just let go of a lead, and she was very very pissed off, shouting things like Jezus Christus and fucking kankerzooi (with the latter better being left untranslated). To Harmsen's credit, she has developed a lot from last year, but I don't think she has the patience to beat the typical claycourters like Cabeza Candela, who just get everything back without pace; the Spaniard was just grinding and grinding and waiting for Harmsen to whack the ball either in or out. Harmsen has the power, but in these rallies at the end of the match she lacked the capacity to control them. She would do well with some anger management :ignore: Cabeza Candela displayed very little to make me believe that she can win this tournament, but then again it's possible that these were tactics.

Anastasia Poltoratskaya RUS beat Teodora Mircic SRB [8] | 6-3 7-6

I saw both players for the first time last week in Vlaardingen and was reasonably impressed by both of them. I think Mircic has a very nice, complete game to watch. She really mixes things up and has some nice volleys too. But what she lacks is what Poltoratskaya has: power. This means that the Russian was dictating play from the baseline all the time and in the end she was - barely - too solid for Mircic. Some really impressive groundies from Poltoratskaya at times.

Nastya is a loose cannon, so she really needs some support from the sideline. Like in Vlaardingen, this was provided by her doubles partner, Irina Kuzmina. But in general, her attitude was much better than last week :yeah: Apparently, according to edgars, Poltoratskaya said to Kuzmina that she played poorly, but that her opponent played worse. I disagree and thought the level of play was quite high  Then Kuzmina said something about chocolate  But Poltoratskaya ended up buying some Haribo sweets instead :spit:

I also saw some games of Maes against Siegemund, but this was really not very interesting, so I'll spare you the details.

Marco Crugnola ITA [1] beat Bart Beks NED [5] | 6-2 Ret.

Marco was always going to win this match. The Italian has a very entertaining game to watch, with aggressive groundstrokes that he quite frequently follows up by going to the net, and in matches like these, in which he is the clear favourite, remains very focused. Against Beks, all he needed to do was to serve well to win his service games, and to keep the ball in play in the rallies until Beks would miss.

The Dutchman is already quite old (my guess is he's around 35) and, if anything, more of a doubles 'specialist' than a singles player. Basically, Challengers are above his level. It showed, as Crugnola was easily dispatching him. Then, after he lost the set, Beks said that he was too sick to continue to play. In all fairness, he did seem very red. Apparently, he had stomach problems. He told Crugnola that "against other guys I can play, but against you I need everything". It was quite sad for him, but he's still in doubles.

Iñigo Cervantes ESP [2] beat Stephan Fransen NED | 7-6 7-5

Spanish claycourt skills against Dutch power. Fransen is a very interesting player to watch, with a nice attitude and with a great talent to whack that ball like no one can. Obviously such whacking is very error-prone and better players will know just how to deal with him. Fransen will always struggle to break serve, but all it needs is one sloppy service game from his side to lose the set. This vulnerability also broke him down against Cervantes, who was much less solid than I expected, and who won't do much damage in the main draw.

Fransen was better in Vlaardingen against Plotniy, but he has the potential to become even better. I think a Top 300 rank is not beyond him if he can channel his power better. It might also be worth focusing on doubles only. Here, however, he and Romano Frantzen are very unlucky to have drawn the top seeds, Junaid and Marx, in the first round.

Stefano Ianni ITA [3] beat Tristan Farron-Mahon IRL | 3-6 7-6 6-4

Easily the most entertaining match of the day, if surely not the best. I did not expect much of Farron-Mahon based on his track record, but it turns out I was wrong. Don't get me wrong, the guy is not a worldbeater by any means, but he is a very nice player to watch and I took an instant liking towards him. He's got a nice game that revolves around solid baseline strokes with which he tries to steer his opponent around the court. Solidity best describes him, as he tries to dominate more via placement than power. I guess the downside of this is that on a bad day, when he is lacking precision and his opponent has more power, he can be swept aside relatively easily. His attitude is also laudable: he often applauds good shots from his opponent.

That was not the case yesterday however. Ianni is someone who I would describe as the male version of Maria Elena Camerin. And, seeing as I am a big fan of MEC, this means it's hard for me to not like Ianni. He has this typical Italian temper as he starts screaming after virtually every mishit. He was particularly mad about the vento; the wind that was plaguing him. The Italian grew increasingly frustrated as Farron-Mahon rushed off to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Ianni did put up a fight then, but he was never going to get back into that set.

Then in the second set the players were quite evenly matched, as the Irishman started to make some more mistakes and Ianni's strokes found the good side of the lines a bit (but only a bit) more frequently. Nevertheless, Ianni did throw away a lead in this set, and it ended up with Farron-Mahon serving for the match at 6-5. At this stage, the Irishman genuinely choked. Then, in the breaker, the momentum was clearly with Ianni. The Irishman got frustrated and screamed that there was no way he was going to play a third set. Well, it turned out he had to.

Before continuing, Farron-Mahon took an injury time-out for cramps, showing his lack of experience. The guy is not unfit at all, but I was surprised to see him being unable to play three sets without cramping. Ianni, who had the support of Crugnola and Burzi for most of the match (and Poltoratskaya and Kuzmina, although they took more of an interest in chatting Crugnola up), had no fitness problems whatsoever. And it wasn't like he was doing less running than Tristan.

When play recommenced, there was a very very curious incident. Farron-Mahon was serving and then broke one of his shoelaces :haha: This meant that he had to change his laces, but then who carries extra laces in his bag? Help came in the form of Farron-Mahon's compatriot James McGee, who had just won his match against Bas van der Valk. There was a lot of hilarity about this. Ianni was joking that his opponent needed to receive a code violation for taking too long to serve. This joke became more serious though as I have never seen someone take so long to replace laces as Farron-Mahon :rolls: I think he was taking his time to let the cramps subside a bit, and to break Ianni's momentum. In the end, this did not work as the Italian was slightly the better player in the remainder of the match. The set itself wasn't very noteworthy, but in the end tempers flared a bit. When Ianni set up his first match point, he shouted something, to which Farron-Mahon responded "shut your mouth. I speak Italian" and Ianni said something along the lines of "who are you talking to? me? You can speak to the referee". It didn't get much worse than that though, as Ianni finished things off on his first MP and Farron-Mahon had been too good a sport throughout the match to be likely to get into an argument. All in all, this match was not top tennis, but definitely top entertainment.

Lesya Tsurenko UKR [Q] beat Bo Verhulsdonk NED [Q] | 6-0 6-4

 This was easily the worst tennis of the day. Verhulsdonk is this giantess of a slender blonde Dutch girl who possesses a surprisingly poor serve for someone of that height. She also lacks power and, in general, a game. Anyone with something that resembles a game plan and with at least some basic groundstrokes can beat her. Tsurenko, with her revealing outfit, only barely met those criteria in the few games that I saw. The wind was definitely a factor here as well, but tennis was the real loser here, as the Ukrainian got to advance to the next round while much much better players like Mircic, Oprandi and also Harmsen would have to pack their bags.

Chayenne Ewijk NED [6] beat Romina Oprandi ITA [Q] | 6-2 6-3

This was, by far, the best match of the day. edgars knows Chayenne personally and introduced me to her, and the girl is so incredibly friendly and upbeat :worship: Just as you'd expect her to be, if you have seen one of her matches. Anyways, last week in Vlaardingen she had to withdraw from doubles due to tendinitis in her right arm. Yesterday she wasn't even sure if she would actually play her match. She arrived on-site very late and would use her practise session to see if she would actually play the match or not. You can imagine how tough it must be to be the first lucky loser, waiting and waiting and always having to be present to play a match in case someone pulls out.

Well, it turned out Chayenne was fit enough to play. This is good, as she said she hopes to make the qualies cut for the Australian Open and she really needs the points. The match was moved to centre court, which was also the setting it deserved. Interestingly enough, Oprandi also appeared to be injured, playing with some blue tape on her lower right arm. Sometimes, when she was serving, it also seemed as if her wrist bothered her. Also, I'd be surprised if the Italian had actually practised before she started the match. If she had, I certainly did not see her.

These injuries never had an impact on the level of play, though. Chayenne started of serving really well and hitting good groundstrokes. Oprandi was hitting her token dropshots, of course, but Ewijk was able to get most of them back. All in all, the Dutch girl was clearly the better player in the first set, but you could tell that Oprandi, as the games got by, was working up a rhythm and was getting more into the match.

This showed in the second set, which was very, very close. In the end, the scoreboard reads 2-6 3-6 and looks like an easy victory, but this is a very deceptive scoreline. There was absolutely nothing in it in the second set, as Ewijk's serve faltered and Oprandi's groundstrokes become more pressing and improved in both pace and placement. Moreover, the Italian started to play with more topspin, which seemed to bother Ewijk a bit. The rallies became longer and longer, and most of them finished with great winners from either player. It was really quite nerve-wrecking. The final games of the match were soooo close as well and I was already envisioning Chayenne losing the set, as the momentum really seemed to be swinging in Oprandi's favour. Then the chair umpire gave Chayenne a warning for taking too long in between points. Truth to be told, this was probably true, as she was often walking to her towel and losing the ball while bouncing it. This could have really brought Chayenne down, but instead it gave her the extra motivation to close it out in some tense points. She was really happy with the win and shouted a big Jaaaaaaaa at the end :D

We talked a bit after the match and she was very happy with the support. Her arm was feeling very heavy ("like twenty kilos") and she had it treated with ice later on, but I'm hoping it's not too bad. With Bertens or Kuzmina as the next opponent, I think the QF is within reach. Moreover, the form is definitely good. Both girls really played a very very good match and Oprandi wasn't disheartened either.

Frederica Piedade POR [4] beat Brenda Schultz-McCarthy NED | 6-4 6-4

I only saw a few games of this, but Brenda was, of course, displaying her token backhand slice and her booming serve, while Piedade was trying to be solid from the baseline. From those games it immediately became clear that there was no way that Piedade would lose this if she could keep the solidity up. Brenda, I'm afraid, is getting worse with each tournament :wavey: I really hope for her sake that she can get the farewell she wants, at Wimbledon qualies next year. But it is clear that she needs the Wimbledon organizers to work with her there, for she will need a QWC as there is no way that she is getting in on her own merit with this current form.

Oh, I also saw Jurak and Lukic defeat Lyndina and Makovey in like twenty minutes or something :tape: Everytime I looked up, they had won another game. Couldn't tell you much about the actual game, nor about who was Lyndina and who was Makovey, but Jurak/Lukic are a good team that have a fair shot at the title here. And Vojka can use the doubles as a way to regain some form in her comeback, after she lost in singles to Meddens (of which I saw nothing).

I also saw Peter Luczak and Miles Armstrong hitting in a practice session, and this was extremely intense. Seeing as this is Luczak's comeback event, I was interested in seeing his form, and it's fair to say that he is looking very good. He's missing precision a bit, but the fitness is good and his groundstrokes are enough to drive much of the field mad. OK, he was playing against Armstrong who would do better to avoid claycourts altogether, but I was really impressed. He was also quite satisfied with his own performance.

All in all, a very enjoyable day of tennis :worship:

Prediction? Pff. I suck at predicting. I'd guess Navarro, as I think he is the better player. if he has to play from the baseline, he would've worse results. His baseline game is very poor.

he made the final here and lost against a player who has 10 wins in a row right now. I think that is not a bad week for Iván anyway.

and he'll have high-rank this week, almost top-70 :)
