Hi Xristos, thanks for posting these!

I particularly like the green top/grey pants combination. Hope he'll indeed wear it at the 2008 RG, he'd look awesome in that combination. :yeah:

Xristos

Because Rafa will wear Red at the Aus Open..

Because Rafa will wear Red at the Aus Open..okay, not that I care what Rafa wears  as long as he wins he could wear a potato sack.....

the brown won't look good against the red clay......but whatever

Metis

I like the green-brown combination. Carlita, I actually think it will look good on the red clay which is not exactly red but more towards orange. They are all earthy colors. But I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Xristos
10-09-2007, 05:44 AM
Yes, I agree. The brown will look very nice I suspect.

Only the Brown top that Feli will wear would look very nice agianst the hot sun and orange clay.

Personally I think they are all the same...only different colour and sometimes a different stripe/spot/smudge.... Nike is getting a bit boring..... after a few years of pirate pants and sleeveless shirt it's time for something new.... but that's just my opinion.

MariaV

I agree with you on the 'a bit boring' part, hopefully they'll come up with something new soon. :D

What do you want Nadal to wear? Sleeves and short shorts?

Carlita
10-09-2007, 02:19 PM
What do you want Nadal to wear? Sleeves and short shorts?like I said earlier, I couldnt care less, he could wear a potatosack, dress, long trousers, binliner...whatever. As long as he wins!

It's the results that count, not what he wears ;)

Shorts would be nice again though....he's got nice legs, why hide them?:p

Xristos

Lol, nice avatar.

Nadal is unique thats why he needs something other then shorts. :)

Please God don't let it be yellow

Please God don't let it be yellow

This French open Nike line is cool, although I think they should innovate a little bit more.
I am a tennis player too, and I normally play with Nike sleeveless because I like the quality...but I think they could design some with more creativity (like the ones for the Australian open!).
But I think that the best is definitely the bandana. Both, Australian open and French open bandanas are awesome! :D

Xristos

Indeed they are.

Hah. Come on, are all of you so supersticious to genuinely think it matters whatever Rafa will be wearing?

He looks great *whatever*. Though I'm the first to admit that I'd rather not see him appear in the dreaded 'broccoli & cheese'- outfit again, ever since (and including!) Wimbly he's been looking dropdead gorgeous! :yeah: :worship:

^^ Probably not. The AO outfit wasn't as bright as the drawings suggested.

I don't think so either - quite often those drawings are more 'in-your-face'-than the eventual result. In any way I hope so - I think this kind of green will look very good on him, but not if it's the 'fluorescent' version. Just a little bit too much for me.

Ah, who knows? Perhaps he's going for the fluorescent look after all. His opponents might feel they'll have to wear sunglasses in that case, and with a certain opponent's great feeling for hawk-eye challenges already, that might mean quite a bit of an advantage for Raf. :p

Those shorts? Are they short shorts, baggy shorts, almost knee length shorts?

Would have preferred the black shorts with the white/red top at the US Open, but let's be honest, he always looks great and he does suit red!!!

I agree with someone who posted above, I would love to see Rafa in a black top. It doesn't have to be boring, it could have an interesting design on it. I'm guessing we won't see it though as Nike will want to keep him colourful!

I miss the piratas! :(

I read on another forum that the RG 2009 is likely to be a Pink tee with sleeve, and muddy baggy shorts.
Don't know how true the info is, though!

Aren't those T-shirts just part of the overall RG line, rather than what he will be wearing on court? He uses various T-shirts that Nike produce for his practise sessions. I can't imagine Nike ever giving him sleeves for his main top, surely they make more money giving Rafa a more individual look? (And Rafa's look is great because it is different!)

I'm not too keen on the idea of Rafa wearing pink...especially on clay.

I know this sounds odd, but I think its a HUGE mistake to wear something with sleeves. Tennis players (particularly Rafa) are known to want things in a particular fashion, and to change right now...

Look at how he towels off during all his matches...even this rhythm will be destroyed. Why sell out to Nike just to sell more shirts, etc. to the stiff, aristocratic older crowd?

From Nike in April.

Rafael Nadal is expected to wear the White/Red/Black version at the US Open 2008 and the Concord version in the US Open warm up tournaments. James Blake and Carlos Moya are expected to wear the Comet Red version at the Beijing Olympics and the US Open 2008

High-performance microfibers in the polyester fabric pull sweat away from the body and transports it to the fabric surface where it evaporates and leaves the skin cool and dry. Stay dry, stay comfortable, no matter what.

Maybe things have changed since then?

A sight I never thought we'd see: Rafa has attempted to become a Nike zombie...and gone the route of Roger: A COLLAR and SLEEVES!!!!!!!!!! Now we all know Rafa is VERY particular with his rituals and routines...For example, wiping his arms from shoulder down, etc. How in the world was he convinced, and on this big a stage, to go with sleeves and and a collar? Very disappointing...and I hope this does not lead to his being too caught up in the trappings of the top spot...

Pat Cash stated that Rafa needs to avoid distractions to maintain his level...and now, the cover of New York Magazine...and this: a change in the Rafa package (i.e. the athlete of the masses)...to a Fed Clone...country club type:sad:

The outfit is horrible, he took a less conservative color scheme (ugly, I mean) - I guess to make him look at least a little different from Roger, and the shirt is two sizes smaller - but it is way too similiar to what Roger is wearing.

I guess he got sick of the sleeveless thing, from what I've heard, Rafa wanted to go 'preppy' for a while now, but I think that's a bad move on his part.

Really, the outfits are half of the whole thing for me. I can go on and on about them. Where the seams are, the styling, the fabric, the print, the styling, the colors. I have a friend I email about all of this in great detail, but *sob* she just had surgery so isn't really responding right now. I can't wait to quiz her on the Nadal change. The color scheme does not annoy me because where I attended grad school had the same color scheme so I am used to the Howard Johnson's colors.

Since Rafa tends to practice in sleeved shirts anyway- I never felt like wearing sleevless shirts and long pants was this over-riding passion that he had that Nike adopted for him, but rather the reverse.

Yes, what will all those kids that bought the sleeveless outfit do now? :awww:

Nike should be sued for inflicting psychological trauma to little children :( not to mention the death of tennis...

We should start a petition and send it to the International Court of Justice in Hague.

I agree, Metis. And if Nadal does not win this tournament, we will know what is to blame. :(

well any minute now we will see what he is wearing and I can hardly contain myself.

Well my sarcasm anyway. Does it really matter as long as he plays well.

Nike has people reading MTF and the other Rafa sites. Is it possible fan opinion had something to do with today's on court wardrobe selection. The orange looks good for exhibition but for tournament play he needs his standard working cloths.

I'm sure all the fangirls(not me, I don't have time) and gay fanboys e-mailed Nike :p How dare they cover Rafa's hot muscles :wavey:

I thought he'd be wearing a red singlet w/ white shorts or white singlet w/ red shorts?

Lame. Not a fan of that dark blue singlet or those tipsarevic-esque shorts of baggyness.

One really has to wonder what went on between the "Grapple in the Apple" outfit debut and Rafa's first match today. Perhaps someone got "cold feet" when it came to changing from a proven style. Probably success at the US Open was more important polo shirts. Maybe for the Wednesday match a suit and tie will the cloths for day.

The 22-year-old Mr. Nadal, on the other hand, has been a cult figure among both passionate and casual tennis fans -- as well as some people who have never picked up a racket -- since his first successes on the professional tour five years ago. As a child, he shunned the tennis factories in Florida and learned the game mainly from his uncle, who is his longtime coach.

The idea for an image makeover came from Mr. Nadal himself, says Benito Perez-Barbadillo, who handles press relations for the tennis player. He says the new look was developed gradually over the past couple of years, with sponsors, Mr. Nadal's communications team and the player himself working together.

"It's not like remaking a Coca-Cola bottle. Rafa has a clear idea of what he wants to be," says Mr. Perez-Barbadillo. "It's the normal evolution of a person; he has changed, his tastes have changed."

My opinion is Rafa may have input and be will to take the blame but he was influenced by the fast talking marketing guys.

This is very very strange.

Never has Rafa played a grand slam wearing his lead in top/shorts.

Yep. Very strange. For this reason, I'm still half expecting him to wear something different for his next match, which will be the 'real' US Open outfit. Not expecting the orange shirt though, as Rafa never wears the same clothes for press conferences and his actual match.

I do wonder though whether Nike has caught wind of the fan opinion on this. I wouldn't have thought that it would have changed anything as they have invested in this 'new look', but everywhere you look, people seem to be dead against the change.

Hmmm... yep, strange. I'm not really against the sleeves but does the No 1 always have to be so ... neat and conservative or how to put it. Is there really a need to change Rafa's image now? Would this do any good? I don't think so.

And I wonder what's exactly Rafa's position then. Does or doesn't he want the change? Rafa getting 'old and conervative' .... .:awww:

Apparently Rafa decided against the new outfit at the last minute:

Hours before his first U.S. Open match Monday, Rafael Nadal decided that his game was more important than his wardrobe, telling his advisers and corporate sponsor Nike Inc. that he wasn't ready for an image makeover after all.

Over three days the exuberant Spanish star known as Rafa had practiced in a new wardrobe that included such radical adjustments as shirts with short sleeves and pants that stopped above the knee instead of a few inches below.

But Mr. Nadal ultimately decided that his first match at the final Grand Slam event of the year wasn't the right setting for his planned sartorial reinvention -- particularly after he had captured two Grand Slams, Olympic gold and the top spot in the world rankings in his old garb.

:yeah:

Exactly my thinking

I went through some pics on Getty images and I have to admit I liked how Rafa looks in this orange shirt with short sleeves. The entire outfit looks good on him. I'm just not ready to give up on the sleeveless shirts. Giving up on pirates pants was hard enough :p

Thankyou Rafa, a wise decision. I admit I almost leaped for joy when I saw him playing in the good ol' sleeveless. I actually like the orange shirt, and the dark blue one he wore is among my least favourites of his traditional outfits, but even considering that, Im dead set against a conservative "#1" style change. The Rafa we all came to know and love is the one we want at #1, not some Federer-clone marketing tool. The longer the change takes, the better imo.

Kudos to Rafa for standing up to the evil empire that is Nike. Nike was simply trying to take advantage of Rafa's sudden rise and success...for their own benefit...not giving a hoot about the athlete himself or his legions of fans. They wanted a Rafa clone, and, yet again, Rafa showed that he is an INDIVIDUAL...and will not allow the greedy tyrants of Phil Knight's mega-company to milk him for their benefit...at the cost of his contentment on and off the court.

Rafa leave Nike...leave the slave-based, greed machine that represents almost all this is wrong with modern sport. This should be your first step..

Nike, you failed-THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
