What a gun, he was down 5-2 in the first set tiebreak I believe.

Tough loss for Jamie as he had a minibreak in the tiebreak, and a set point at *6-7, but it's going to be tough to win a match when Groth served like he did.

It's good to see him back playing tennis though, and hopefully he continues to get better and can get a nice draw next week at Wimbledon (the deserving WC that is Vassallo or Dabul would do nicely)

where is he playing next week?

His ranking (308) is lower than the 15th alternate for both challengers for next week so its hard to say. Hes either going to Romania or Italy or not playing. The week after he is playing in Dublin, Ireland Challenger.

Thankfully after this week his ranking will be at a career high :)

great win for a guy in his first atp tour match, hope he can this unlikely run contiune.

he's on the lsit for Dublin but is on the alts so he might have to go and qualify for that challenger.

Yeah he should be a regular on the challenger circuit after this week.

This is an event that he could really use as a springboard. A run to the quarters or semis is not out of the question. Hope he's signed on for Newport as well!

I'll get to see his gun serve in person :bigclap: If he does have to qualify then I reckon that he will anyway.

Are you joking? Groth was a horrible draw for him to get IMO.

Groth or "Sloth" should I call him may have beaten Mark Philipousis, but Groth is ranked 230 ish.. Baker is ranked 250th, almost a hundred places away.
Baker should be top 100, there is quite a lot of hype on him and he loses to this Australian moron.

Yeah but it was on grass against a guy who fired down 20 aces and only lost 4 points behind his first serve, to come back from illness just to watch the ball fly past you all the time can't be easy... I certainly expected Groth to win (should have put my money where my mouth is :banghead:), Baker's a good grinder, on a slower surface I reckon he'd have Groth.

you know what Jamie has been through in the last few months, right? You realize that this was his first match back after being out for some time with a serious illness that could have killed him had it not been diagnosed correctly and quickly and treated just in time? Bad luck for him that he had to face a big server on grass, but I am sure Jamie will get his strength back and get his match fitness back with more time.

I know he had a serious disease at the Oz, but he's fine now and he should have beaten this twat.

It was actually later than that, here in the US. This was his first match back. Have you seen Groth play? He doesn't suck nearly as much as you seem to think he does.

This is fantastic news for young Sam. I was lucky enough to meet him at the Australian Open Wildcard play-offs in December. I watched him practice with Bryden Klein for a good while and I can tell you that his serve is even more massive when you see it in person. I had a good chat with his father during the practice session and he was a great bloke. Speaking to him gave me a real insight into the sacrifices that these players and their families make. So congratulations on your first ATP main draw win.

Indeed - only reason I have clicked on his match links (already forgotten who he beat last week to cause a bit of commotion here) is because of the last name :D Groth has now joined Schwank to rate among my new top tennis surnames
