Top seed David Ferrer reached the second round at the Ordina Open with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Dutch wild card Jesse Huta Galung on Sunday in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The Spaniard, who is making his 2008 grass court debut, recorded 73% on his first serve and converted four of seven break points to defeat Huta Galung in their first career meeting.

World No. 5 Ferrer entered the grass court campaign after reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last week (l. to Monfils). The Valencia resident won his home title (d. Almagro) in April and also finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Barcelona. He improves to 30-12 for the season.

Top seed David Ferrer advanced to the second round of the Ordina Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch with a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Italian qualifier Massimo Dell’Acqua on Tuesday.

World No. 5 Ferrer, who opened his 2008 grass campaign with a win over Dutch wild card Jesse Huta Galung on Sunday in his ‘s-Hertogenbosch debut, fired seven aces and converted three of five break points to defeat No. 472 Dell’Acqua in their first meeting.

The 26-year-old Spaniard, who captured his sixth ATP title in Valencia (d. Almagro) in April, will now contest his eighth ATP quarterfinal of the season against sixth-seeded Croatian Mario Ancic, who cruised past Belgian Steve Darcis 6-2, 6-4.

The 24-year-old Ancic has won 12 straight matches in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and has a 15-2 lifetime record at the event. He captured the title in 2005 (d. Llodra) and ’06 (d. Hernych), but missed last year’s tournament due to a six-month illness layoff. The World No. 43 is through to his first ATP quarterfinal since February, when he reached the Marseille final (l. to Murray) and Zagreb semifinal (l. to Ljubicic).

Ferrer to Meet Gicquel in Final

Top seed David Ferrer advanced to his first grass court final with a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over Argentine teenager Juan Martin del Potro in the semifinals at the Ordina Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch on Friday.

Ferrer, who also advanced past del Potro at the Australian Open when the 19-year-old retired with a back injury trailing by two sets, fired six aces and took his chance on two of three break points to seal his second victory over the Argentine in 1 hr., 26 min.

World No. 65 del Potro was looking to reach his first ATP final. The Munich quarterfinalist, who was contesting just his second ATP semifinal, now slips to 1-12 against Top 10 opponents, and to 8-7 for the season.

ATP World No. 5 Ferrer now improves to a 33-12 match record for the season. The 26-year-old Spaniard won his sixth ATP title in his hometown of Valencia in April (d. Almagro) and also finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in Barcelona.

Ferrer will look to win his seventh ATP title when he takes on Frenchman Marc Gicquel in the final. Gicquel has won their two career meetings, although this will be their first meeting since 2004.

Ferrer Continues Spanish Grass Court Success With Title

For the second week in a row a Spanish player has won an ATP grass court title after 36 years without a title on the surface.

Top seed and World No. 5 David Ferrer captured his first career ATP grass court title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over unseeded Frenchman Marc Gicquel in the Ordina Open in 's-Hertogenbosch on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Spaniard follows countryman and World No. 2 Rafael Nadal to win a grass court title. Last week at the Queen's Club in London, Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. Prior to Nadal's win, the last Spaniard to collect a grass court crown was Andres Gimeno in Eastbourne in June 1972.

Ferrer earned his second ATP title of the season and seventh in his career. In April, he won in his hometown of Valencia (d. Almagro) and finished runner-up to Nadal in Barcelona.

The Valencia native didn't drop a set and only was broken only once in 48 service games (saved 15 of 16 break points) during the week.

"I'm very happy with this win here in 's-Hertogenbosch," said Ferrer. "This was my first appearance here and it's great to win the title. This title means a lot to me, since it's my first title on a grass court. It also gives me more confidence for Wimbledon."

"Of course clay is still my favourite surface. This week I was playing very well, taking advantage of all my chances as I did for example in the quarterfinal against Ancic."

On being the first Spanish champion in 's-Hertogenbosch, Ferrer added,: "I think it's important for Spain to see that we start playing better and better on this surface as well. It's very nice to be the first Spanish champion in my first appearance here."

Ferrer broke Gicquel, who was appearing in his third career ATP final, in the opening game of the match and never faced a break point in the 42-minute set. The Spaniard only lost seven points in five service games. In the second set, Ferrer broke to take a 2-1 lead and then saved two break points in the sixth game. He broke Gicquel again in the next game to grab a 5-2 lead and then closed out the one hour and 22 minute match.

Ferrer, who hit 15 aces coming into the final, fired 12 aces on Saturday, and won 64% of second serve points compared to Gicquel's 40%. He converted three of seven break points and saved both break points he faced.

The 31-year-old Gicquel, who was 2-0 against Ferrer in previous meetings, was attempting to become the fifth first-time ATP winner and the oldest winner this year. His previous ATP runner-up efforts came in Lyon in 2006-07.

En route to the final, the 60th-ranked Frenchman defeated countryman and No. 2 seed Richard Gasquet in the second round and No. 7 seed Guillermo Canas in the semifinals. He was also trying to become the third Frenchmen to win an ATP title this season, joining Michael Llodra (Adelaide, Rotterdam) and Gilles Simon (Casablanca). Llodra was the last Frenchman to win the 's-Hertogenbosch title here four years ago (d. Coria).

"Even if the result is pretty clear, I feel like I played a good match today," said Gicquel. "But he was just too solid and he deserves to win. There's no easy points against him and he's always there and he fights so much. Maybe I should have attacked a bit more, but he didn't give me too many opportunities. I feel like he's one of the best returners on tour and he also moves very well. It's very tough to play against him."

From the ATP site

Defending champion David Ferrer ensured he did not suffer the same fate as Spanish compatriots Fernando Verdasco and Tommy Robredo - who both made early exits - at the Ordina Open.

The third seed avenged his Estoril defeat to Oscar Hernandez with a 6-4, 6-3 win in 84 minutes Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals against another Spaniard Ivan Navarro.

The World No. 19 improved to 15-8 lifetime on grass courts after reaching his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final (or better) on the 2009 ATP World Tour season. Ferrer, 27, has reached two finals at Dubai (l. to Djokovic) and Barcelona (l. to Nadal).

Third seed Ferrer, who has not lost a set in the tournament, will next meet fellow Spaniard Ivan Navarro who beat Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-4 3-6 7-5.

"Hernandez kept me running but running is part of my game. I like to move from the base line, that's where I find my touch," Ferrer said.

He is the highest seed left in the men's draw after the top two, Fernando Verdasco and Tommy Robredo, lost on Tuesday.

OK so it's "'denBosch" 12 and I think Ferru looks good so far... he seems to have much more confidence and focus these last 2 years (can Marta be an influence on this????: I recall his USO blowout in 2008 and insignificant year 2009 was after he broke up with his previous long term g/f - OK, pure speculation...) but Ferru IS an emotional player which is one of the reasons I really like him.
