Wonder why Sampras had so much trouble with Dutchmen?

Wiuthout too much stereotyping, I've noticed Dutch players tend to be quit tall- that helps make the serve come down at an angle which can give all sorts of problems- and most of them were pretty good net players with big wingspans, so it was difficult for Pete to make the passing shots.

It's a shame they never met on grass, as it would have been very interesting, especially if it would have been in Pete's peak 95-96 years of catlike quickness.

Yeah, but 95-96 Edberg wasn't the same Edberg anymore- I think if they would have met during Wimbledon '94 when Pete was at the top of his game and Edberg was still going strong,that would have been a match to cherish.
Or even if in 1993 Edberg would have beaten Courier in the semis and faced Pete in the final- that would probably have been one of the all time Wimbledon classics!

I loved the fact that Ferreira and Bruguera both gave Sampras for different reasons. Wayne always seemed to lift his game when he played Sampras. I remember when they played in Basle and Wayne was on fire that day.

Sampras didn't beat Ferreira between 1995-98 and they played 4 times in that timeframe.

I couldn't agree more- in fact, before the Edberg/Court match, I pretty much figured Eddy would come through on that one, and never expected Courier to win. The conditions at Wimbledon were perfectly suited for baseline play that year, and Jim by that time had started to get onto Eddy's kicking serve, and if I recall correctly, Stefan had to hit way too many second serves during that match. I would have loved to have seen and Edberg/Sampras final instead.

Yeah, having never seen that match between Courier and Edberg it really had me scratching my head trying to figure out how did Jim beat Stefan on GRASS of all things :scratch:

if only he couldve kept it going in the early 00's

one of my fav Rafter quotes was this one about Sampras;

"He tries to play down the reason why he lost, giving no respect to the other player.....that is what really upsets me about him and the reason I try to piss him off as much as I can."

Yes, I remember that quote and good for Rafter to say that.

I'm sure everyone remembers Sampras defeat by Krajicek, I know the score and everything, but I didn't see the match. Did anyone of you?

So how was it? Was it a high quality match? one-sided? Did Pete just play really bad or did Richard play his absolutely best?
