Wawrinka had 3-0 in the third before Gonzo stormed back. Sad for Stan but it was a great match.

Congrats Gonzo!

What a magnificent comeback by Fena :worship:
He was down 5-7 2-6 0-3 and after that he was just unstoppable. Really nice to see him fighting so hard and great to see him in a 2nd week of a grand slam again after that AO final last year. Ginepri next, should be a win, but Ginepri seems really unpredictable so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Good luck Fena :rocker2:

Shame for Wawrinka... He needs to win matches like these. Bravo to Gonzalez for the comeback.

What a comeback by Gonzo . Did Stan drop his level, or did Gonzo suddenly up his level after those first two sets?

You have to think that, as a top player, Stan must learn not to give up lead of 2 sets to love and a break up in the third. Amazingly, it is the first time he blew a two set lead before. Gonzalez found a way to manage to keep the rallies going, slicing his backhand to death and drawing errors from Stan who got frustrated after a few shots, or just eventually forcing to go to the forehand which was certain death for Wawrinka.

Not the best match quality wise, but entertaining stuff nonetheless.

Why is every losing player either "stunned" or "shocked"? Sorry just wondered - I've always put it down to media limited vocabulary.

Anyway, sad for Stan - this can be a problem for him at times. Good for Fernando. I'd have been happy either way in this match in the end.

Incredible comeback from Fernando. Wawrinka is only a top 10 player in ranking at this point. He still needs big match experience.

Winner is irrelevant though because Ginepri is next up and they are already adding his name to the list of winners.

Opportunity lost for Stani, but credit to Gonzo he was able to turn the match around and kept aggressive and not just using brainless ball bashing that happens at times and took the chances when on offer.

good job Gonzo, he looked on fire and very aggressive once he made that comeback in the 3d

Merton
05-31-2008, 02:38 PM
That was not a choke, Gonzo raised his level and played more aggressively in the 3rd set and Stan could not adjust. Excellent fight from Gonzalez and a good clay season for Stan despite the mised opportunity here.

Obviously, when you have a big lead in a match, it's stunning/shocking when you lose. More importantly though, how about suggesting some alternatives?? :wavey:

dude, Ginepri  how can he be the favorite??, he just had luck in this RG :p

Gonzalez is the favorite in that match.

Yeah, Ginepri was lucky to beat Andreev, one of the most solid clay courters of the season.:confused: I do agree Gonzo is the favorite to win their match though.

Gonzo hit one absolutely crazy fh on a big point late in the 4th set. I mean crazy even by his standards. He was way outside the tramlines and curled a gargantuan forehand up the line. Stan was right there but it was past him so quickly he could only applaud. I think it was at *4-3 30a in the 4th set. It was sometime around then anyway. I'd like to see it again if anyone knows the one I'm on about.

I didn't mean to sound like I was gettng at you or your thread title - sorry if it sounded that way.:)

I can see the application in this case. I was more meaning the tabloid type of headlines that have virtually everyone who loses a match either being stunned or shocked by their opponent - even when it actually isn't a surprise win at all!
