Dammit Lleyton!!! He had 40-15 in the game he was broken in the fifth. Great performance though. He did better than could've been expected.

Congrats Ferrer!!!

Ferrer didn't play well at all.

This match is a perfect example of the difference between Hewitt now and Hewitt circa 2000. There was no fire in his eyes. No fist pumps. No emotion. He was totally flat out there.

Hope the hip feels a bit better and that he can start getting more matches under the belt

They both had their chances to win the match in the end. I didn't believe that Llegs with his bad hip will be able to cope up more than 3 sets against Pics, but he did it. I think that if he was in full health he would have won, it was obvious that he had problems after 3 set, didn't run on every ball and trying to shorten points.

Hewitt really blew his 4-4 service game in the 5th. That volley he missed at deuce was unbelievable.

A superb match all in all. Great fight from both of them. Ferrer looked surprisingly frustrated out there. It could have gone either way and if perhaps Hewitt would have served with his first at 4-4 40-15... A real spartan fight, no? I feel a little bad for Hewitt because he was finding his form and his shots. He did attack well when he had to but other times he was blowing away poor points with catastrophic unforced errors. Useless i guess because you cannot defeat Sexy.

Congrats Ferrer!!!

He was tired at the end unlike Ferrer. Lack of concetration and voila - here's Ferrer.

Nevertheless, LLeyton did better than could've been expected as you said.

Excellent fight, best match of the tournament. It is a rare case in a clay match where one can point a single decisive moment, in my mind that was when Hewitt lost a makeable volley at 4-4, *40-40 in the 5th.

Thinking about it, that 4-4 game excruciating. Lleyton got foot faulted off an unreturnable serve on game point. Then he missed that deuce volley when all he had to do was put the previous shot on the other side of the court. Such a frustrating way for the match to end. Credit to both anyway though.

I'm so proud of Lleyton today. I'd rather he didn't play with an injury but anyway without a lot going for him coming into the game he played a great match and lost to a superb fighter and player in Ferrer. While I have doubts over Lleyton getting a proper run where Hewitt can show his true game his performance today shows that he is still a top player and it certainly gives this fan hope.

Hopefully Lleyton takes it easy this week (yeah right) and has a great (and fit) Queens campaign :)

As for Ferrer. Great stuff, he was incredible on the big points at the end of the 5th. He is not an overachiever, he is an excellent tennis player!

A good match between two of my favorites.

So impressed with Lleyton for his first match on clay.

Ferru worried me when he deflated in the second and third sets. But he picked it up and I loved some of his play to get the break in the fifth.

That suffers for the good tennis, a sorrow(sentence) that has gained Ferrer's horrifying and limited tennis, a type with an aesthetically insulting tennis.

Ferrer was lucky that Lleyton newly is reappearing in this tournament after weeks of stagnation (in the first set the aussie was with very badly timing), of credit come with any more pace the aussie I do not have doubts that he was gaining this meeting.

Now the most lamentable thing of this is going to be to have be to bear see to this tennis player's dirt called Ferrer in semis almost by certainty, since it lost Davydenko and the draw was opened the spanish. :aparty:

Lamentable for the good tennis.

All,

I saw almost all of this match. It was great. It really could have gone either way - but the UEs hurt Hewitt in the end. It was nice to see him hang tough for five sets though - seeing this was his only clay court tourney. I look for him to do well during the grass and hard court seasons. He still has staying power. I think if anything, he's lost a half step - which in the past when he was number one helped him. But over all, he can still bring it when on. He has to remember to redirect the ball more and against whomever - because in doing so was how he used to win a lot of games, returning or serving - and how he might be able to do so again. One thing about Lleyton is, he still believes.

Perhaps are they going to say to me that tennis of Ferrer is a delight for the sight?? Please....

Only to see to play to Cañas gives more disgust that to see to play to pics humbly.

And do not be since like some they can say that Ferrer is going to win Federer in a hypothetical semifinal (stgobaiano and bad_religion for example), if playing Hewitt newly well from the 2nd set he was capable of taking the Spanish up to 5th set and it to fight until the end. :smash:

yeah for sure... ferrer and canas are just... tradesmen... simple got-nothing-much-to-look-at tradesmen

but there is a certain charm in the lads that have sh!te junior results, the guys who absolutely no-one rates at all... but work their guts out day in day out to somehow make a living from tennis... emilio sanchez is a good example of a similar unspectacular game and probably makes him a sound coach...

personally... i cant believe that ferrer is in the top 10 for this long already... and maybe he himself is surprised...

but f**ken hey... he is there...

ferrer is an overacheiver... just like hewitt...

i missed the match and i am dirty about it...
i also dont think hewitt was injured... just a sick note from the docs so he can dodge the communist set-up mandatory clay events... cos you shouldnt have to play if you dont wanna...

SO CLOSE for Lleyton! It really came down to a couple of points.

Saw only the last 2 sets. Lleyton played really well, deep, clean groundstrokes. But Ferre was so solid, LLeyton could not afford to make one mistake against him.

It's sad to see Lleyton lose but reassuring to see that without matches under his belt, not 100% fit and on clay, he is still able to show this performance.
Since Lleyton loses so often to guys who go really far in the tournament, we can expect Ferrer to go far here.
