Thatta boy Gael. From looking at the stats it was ugly at times, but you prevailed. Time to make a run in this tourney!

3d set I saw was very crap
Monfils looked dead tired and when it looked like going to 4th set Horna choked serving for the set at 5-4 and after that got cramps at 5-5.

Horna cramped at the end so bad he was in tears. Gael was exhausted too. Monfils works too hard for the money, he's garbage after 2 sets.

Yea Monfil isn't 100% healthy. I think he tried to give every set away he had the lead in. A win is a win though.

The first set was painful too, terrible start from Horna, Monfils was leading 5-2, couldn't serve it out, was way too passive.
He woke up a little bit in the middle of the 2nd set, but always just for one game, and then played passive crap again.
^^
It was not pretty. When he went more for his shots, he was looking great and Horna had no chance, but he spent most of the match 5 meters behind his baseline again. Hence his exhaustion in the middle of the 3rd set already.

At the end of the match, both were playing in wheelchairs

Fun match, poor technically but a lot of fun, two players no fit enough to play just three sets , monfils needs to work on his stamina, he's not fit enough. Gael has the craziest and ugliest shots it's actually interesting . Horna had plenty of opportunities and only himself to blame.

I just don't understand why Gael doesn't become more aggressive. He has the shots to do it. Are those shots not consistent enough or what? It just seems as if he is content in getting by on his athletic ability alone and trusts it far too much.

Usual story from Monfils. He comes into Roland Garros out of form and fitness, wins through a couple of rounds, but starts cramping and suffering from fatigue. He bangs his chest so we can all see he has heart, though people would rather see he had the legs to go a three set match and a gameplan that would involve using his head to save his legs.

A couple of rounds in he gets beaten in a plucky but ultimately futile effort and then virtually disappears off the map for the rest of the year with yet more fitness problems.

Same script every year, just a different supporting cast.

Bang that heart, Gael.

I don't know how Monfils did it, but somehow he won.

True but this time he did get two straight set victories, of course that would be a valid comment if he was not already out of gas, although I believe he overacted. Don't expect his lack of training to change until he stops swaping coaches. Well at least I think Melzer is doable.

Happy for Gael but too bad for Horna, not the first time his fitness is not good.

Luis Santa Claus Horna has only himself to blame for this loss, the same old story all over again, this was a very winnable match :o

Pathetic.

At 4-5 and 5-5 in the TB Horna had the two easiest shots of his life to have a set point and gave them away.

Couldn't be a bigger choker not even if he tried.

That's a good win over a pretty good clay court player.
Keep it up Gael! :worship:

This was a tricky match and opponent so I'm glad to see Monfils made it through in straights, though I gather from the comments of those who watched that it was a less than convincing performance

Yes, Christmas in May.

Pathetic.

Couldn't be a bigger choker not even if he tried.

Sadly I didn't get to see it live, but saw a replay of the 1st set and those schoolboy errors in the TB were priceless. At the same time there is no mileage gained in "what if". He had chances in this match and failed to take them.

I wonder if they could build a court that extended outside of the stadium, that way he could stand even further back and rally over the walls.
