Can Ancic Beat Federer?

LleytonMonfils

If they both get there I think he can. Don't know the career head to head, or if they have ever played each other on clay, but I just have a feeling if these two win their 2nd round matches Ancic will pull the upset pretty much letting the tennis world know he's back!

Thoughts on the potential 3rd round matchup?

Not even if Federer breaks one leg.

They played 2 years ago in clay, Fed won in straights.

Today, it's a very dangerous match for Federer and yes, even though Federer should win, of course Ancic "can" beat him...

not on clay. there are only 3 players here who can beat Fed on clay:

1. Nadal
2. Djokovic
3. Davytanko---he doesnt really count since his nuts shrink and he usually runs when he sees Fed across the net. if he would just take Fed on and bring the fight to him, he could make it a good contest.

LleytonMonfils

But shouldn't the fact that Fed seems more vulnerable recently factor in as well? Hell it's not like Ancic has anything to lose.

Exactly. He was just too good for the last 4 years, in my opinion... I'm sure some would disagree.

He does count and should they meet at the semis, it might not be just a "good contest" for Federer, he can lose.

None of Fed's recent loses on clay have been to mugs of the caliber of Ginepri(mind you I'm a Ginepri fan). On clay, Volandri >>>>>>>>>> Ginepri.

In any event suppose I were to say they were equal mugs, ok they both suck. Looking at current form Fed won one event, and made the finals of two clay TMS tournies this year, going out to Rafa 2x. Ancic lost to Ginepri last week. :)

Sam Querry had a better chance than Ancic has.

Best chances for an upset in Fed's half are Davydekno, Gonzalez, Andreev, Monfils, and Ferrer.

I don't bet but yes, he's always a good choice.

Funny to see that a lot of you base their "no" on the Ginepri match. That was a little hiccup after being "drowned" in Portschach for 3 or 4 consecutive days and after having a "holiday" to get mental strength back. Not very telling if you ask me.

I see Roger as the favorite, but Mario on a good day will be a definite threat - actually the only real test for Fed until the Semis IMO. If there will be an upset of the Maestro, it will happen between those two - provided Mario makes it to the third round of course.

Roddick is better in grass than hardcourts, while Djokovic excels on hardcourts, also look what happened when Djokovic faced a Roddick on fire in Dubai, if Andy started attacking and controlling the point immediately after his powerful serve as he did in Dubai, Djoko can't survive it, as returning serve isn't one of Djoko's real strengths.

not to mention how bad Roddick wants Wimbledon already, he has little time left so he wants it SO bad.

i hear you. What if Roddick has an off day serving? Also that Wimby grass does get worn out towards the latter stages of the tournament. in other words, it slows down and the balls dig in a little. this is one reason why nadal has had some success here.

Roddick`s serve was not big enough to take out Gasquet last year even after being up by 2 sets to love. that said, i realize that Roddick is playing a little better this year having secured wins over both Fed and Djokovic so we will see. you are right about his grass court experience. he probably has close to 60 or more matches on grass.

we will know more at Queens. Roddick, Nadal, and Djokovic are all in it.

Dubai surface was significantly faster than the Wimby grass.
