Good job Novak! I was a bit nervous there for a bit but he came through in the end. He and Berrer should have a "Who's got the best overhead" contest.

That was poor performance from Novak, but a win is a win. He didn't get frustrated much (or at least he didn't show it) though, kept calm and he pulled through. First matches are always the trickiest ones though, so hopefully he'll up his level in his next match.

An absolute shite match, on both sides, the 1st set was an abomination. I don't remember Nole's overheads ever sucking so badly. Served out 3rd set on his 3rd try. :help: Still good enough to get to the next rd.

luckily I didn't wake up for this

Novak won. He had some trouble in the beginning getting used to the new commentator from the Serbian National Television (RTS). One he realized that it is the different guy now and that his dad doesn't have to beat anyone up - he was fine.

What a great dropper this Gremelmayr... :inlove:

A match to be forgotten, though Gremelmayr showed he should be by no means underestimated.

Good effort from Denis but it was obvious that he can not continue in the same rhythm as in first set. Preserving strength and energy can be crucial for slam matches. Novak very good ground strokes from both wings, solid serve, par volleying (for his standards) and I can't find suitable words for his amazing overheads.;)

Him and his fucking ball bouncing... I swear to God, the umpire merely looking at the supervisor ain't gonna do shit. Nineteen, twenty or so bounces on break points is pathetic... even with the stupid ass commentator covering up and saying he's been bouncing it less. What's with people consistently defending Novak and his bullshit?

Anyway, the third set was disappointing with how Dennis simply threw away the fightback. From there the end result was obvious. Really great first set though, props for some awesome shots.

Credit to Gremelmayr - excellent first set and showed guts throughout. Worryingly patchy performance from Nole; forehand and overheads strangely unreliable. Made some intelligent adjustments to game though as match progressed but that third set collapse:confused:

It wasn't that easy for the Faker.
Denis got 3 BP in the second set, and had a good chance for 4:2 lead in that set. It was real pitty he didn't took them. We could have witneesed group suicide here on MTF. It would have certanly become lovely little day for them .

I think that the German lost the match after he lost those BP in the second set.
Also his 1 serve % was hilarious. 46%

What was with that choking in 3rd set?
I expected a shaky start, but not that shaky.
Still, he tends to get a lot better in later rounds, so I'm not too worried.

Gremelmayr had some excellent shots :hatoff:, and there were some exciting rallies going on for a while.

Agree wit you. As Novak's fan I lost half of my nerves. But, it was good enough to win. German was so good in 1st, if he can maintain his level of play he will be among 30, very soon. Gremmelmayer has such a good flat passing shot and forehand.

Novak could put himself together. Luckilly, next match is on Wednesday (Eurosport commentators persumes) & he'll play against Q Miguel Angel Lopez Jaen.

Yeah, the fact that mentioning his ball bouncing is "old hat" doesn't change the understanding that it's still bullshit. And yeah, the number has decreased dramatically... that just goes to show how heavily he relied on crap like that last year with over thirty bounces per serve at times. He may have "improved" but is still pretty piss poor, eh?

And as far as Mr within the twenty five seconds goes... learn to count first, aye? :)

Gremelmayr really let himself down at 5-5 in the third, and Djokovic took full advantage despite his lacking performance today. I expect him to cruise right through to the semi's after this early "test".

This argument is really quite old. Did you count the ball bounces against any clock, personally? How many seconds Novak takes between serves? If under 25, he's free to bounce the ball a hundred times, and you just have to quit your bitching and deal.

Djokovic is woefully unprepared for RG and he was probably expecting Gremelmayr to be easy work and was underestimating him and getting pissed off that he wasn't folding. :smash:

First he was at Eurovision, then he was galavanting about celebrating his birthday, and on Saturday night he was at Zimonjic's wedding. Meanwhile, Rafa and Fed have been steadily preparing over the past few days. Novak better get some good practice in on Monday and Tuesday.

Nice! Thanks. It's really hard to believe though that Novak was attending a wedding in Belgrade yesterday, but I guess I have to remember again that it's a different world for people who can charter private airplanes with no problem.

Anyway, he came through against a pesky opponent. Djokovic has entered another world in tennis now. Players will be coming at him with their A games from the beginning. He's not just another guy coming up through the ranks anymore.

Yeah, he is not mentioned in the article as an attendee (they mention Vlado Georgijev, Đule Van Gog, Igor Milanović, Svetlana and Predrag Danilović, Biljana Obradović..., so I'm guessing they would have mentioned him as well). I guess the second part was just rumor.

Nole looked like he rolled on the Chatrier straight out of bed. He did well to recover and win the match. The hours are a bitch...

I like him too. He is good on clay but he is not getting any younger (27 yo in August). Denis was unlucky to draw Djokovic in the fist round.

Solid performance and good result from Denis.

Djokovic`s overhead smatches were (are) terrible. He missed few easy in Hamburg semi too.

Not a spectacle from Nole, but most important thing is the win.
Denis made today one of his best matches in his career, but he missed some chances.

Did anyone else feel that they both mirror each other on the baseline, especially on the backhand side? The forehand's different, but I felt they both had similar instincts at the baseline.

Drysdale and Cahill were commentating on ESPN2. They re-showed parts of the match in the afternoon.

It's a shame you're not in the UK, Lee. Greg Rusedski is (and I quote) "Love, love, loving Djokovic this year" He is part of an unbearable (for me) British Eurosport "in studio" team.

They all had bitter tears of disappointment in their eyes after last year's final. They all have their hopes pinned on Novak for this year.

Q. Would you rather play well and win 4 and 4, or play poorly and win 2 and 2?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Next question, please.
