I didn't realize that the draw for the qualifying comes out on Monday and play starts on Tuesday. Not enough time for those other guys to withdraw. Alx was right....he'll end up playing qualifying.

So not much rest for our Nico.  Poor guy...

These stupid a*sholes that know that they won't be able to play should get fined if they drop out at the last second. :(

I know everyone has left for the weekend so I'm talking to myself. :rolls:

But next week s/b very tense for us Nico fans. Qualifying  and Nico should announce a new coach... :yeah:

BTW - I'm off next Friday on vacation for a week, Lovely and Alx are going to be at RG, and Kid can't post until night. So who is going to volunteer to keep the board active during RG????

oh yes, the intense air around the qualifying for RG   ... but I'm very confident after these past weeks, he'll make it to the MD even if he has to qualify, and that could help him even more :yeah:

I only wish they'd give him more days off but that's not possible it seems :o :p

Brands might have played well, but if Nico wants to return to the regular circuit and do well, he has to beat the 200th ranked player in the world.

I'm sad for him. It's becoming very clear that it's going to be extremely difficult for him to come back into the top 100, let alone back into the top 50.

I don't know where he goes from here. I guess just keep doing the challenger thing with some regular tournaments mixed in until he starts - if he starts - winning consistently on the regular tour again.

I admit that I'm a bit upset with him - he could have made changes in 2007 so he didn't spiral so far down, but he didn't do it.

totally agree with NicoFan and I don't agree with her after Nico's loses all the time, but if he'd have done the changes at the end of the last year, maybe we'd be seeing different results, and I mean, the other guy wasn't serving that well, Nico served horrid and it's not like a top player wouldn't have beaten that guy, those things just don't happen not even if we want to try to find an answer of why Nico lost today.

I hope he plays a challenger the next week, he better be making phone calls to get in one of those challengers :o

I was at the match !!! Brandt was really powerful today...His returns were truly amazing.Nico couldn't do anything. He did all what he could and he fought !

Please, once again don't judge something you didn't see...

And no Nico won't play any Challenger next week.

NicoFan
05-21-2008, 09:54 PM
I don't think he should play next week - I think that he should go home and figure out what he has to do and then come back in a few weeks after the grass season.

He needs to find a coach. He needs to rest a bit (he's got to be tired and physically drained playing all those challengers and traveling here there and everywhere).

Lovely - in our defense, the stats do tell a different story. Brands was only serving at 38% at one point. And Nico kept getting broken, not able to hold his own serve. Brands is 200th for a reason. And I know Nico fought - he's been working hard lately, and has a far better attitude on court.

Bottom line is that he has to figure out how to beat these types of players if he wants to move back up.

It may be that we are all expecting too much from him now, winning matches that he's just not capable of winning anymore. Maybe challengers are the only thing he will play from now on.

LOVELY
05-21-2008, 10:01 PM
Brandt was unbeatable today in my opinion...When he was making a double fault on his serve , the next one was a real powerful shot impossible to defend  Each time the same...

no excuses for me, we've seen this for almost two years now and he wants to be a top player again he should be able to beat these guys and I'm not talking about breaking the other guy's serve, I'm talking about holding his freaking serve! is not like Brandt was hitting aces during Nico's serve but anyway there's nothing else to be done now, another RG that comes and goes in a blink, I can't believe that the GS where he'd shine is the one when he's sucking more and more every year that passes by :banghead:

I'm sure there are reasons he lost but in reality, if he couldn't win this match, how will he ever make it back into the top 100? We can agree to disagree here, but IMO not facing the fact does not make it go away.....Nico can beat the Brandts, but he doesn't and he has to figure out how to do that again.

Once again it was not possible to do anything yesterday. I don't try to find excuses to Nico or whatever. I was at the match. Brands played like he never played before. His forehands were truly amazing
People were  each time he hit the ball. His returns were incredible, really powerful.

There's no way Nico could have hold his serve  It was impossible. The guy was on fire !
Brands is top 200 but yesterday he really played like a top 20.

I don't understand how you can make a judgement on a match you didn't see.
I don't want to argue on this forum but I've seen Nico playing on looooots of matches and when he plays crap I can say.Yesterday was different.

Too bad there's no one else who saw that match  Maybe I should have film the match so that you trust me...

NicoFan
05-22-2008, 11:32 AM
Both sides have points here.

In order for Nico to move back up, he's got to be able to beat the Brandts of the world. A top player would have figured out what to do with the guy by the 2nd set and taken it to him.

But then again, we've all seen these low ranked players play awesome matches now and again who are unstoppable for a match or two or three (that Japanese guy Kei who beat Blake early in the year and then basically disappeared comes to mind).

And since Lovely was there and saw that happen, then we should take her word for it. It is different in person then on the scoreboard.

Hopefully he'll get a new coach, and things will get better. He's doing the right things - playing challengers - and working hard. His attitude on court lately has been far better than in the last two years when he would just give up on court. At least he's trying again.
