The presence of Robin Haase is confirmed:

Martin Verkerk has requested a WC and is likely to get one.

WC for Ricardas Berankis:

Does anyone know the reason of van Gemerden's retirement in Breda (Netherlands F3) last week ?

CooCooCachoo
07-05-2008, 05:14 PM
I went today  Was quite sick and also very tired, so I wasn't too focused on tennis. We also left to drink a cocktail on the beach sometime in the afternoon

Anyways, my observations are:

Javier Genaro-Martinez ESP [3] beat Edualdo Bonet-De Gispert ESP 6-2 6-1

A match between two typical claycourters. The rallies were loooong, with Genaro nearly always dictating them and moaning along the way. Funny thing is he only grunts when he is playing aggressively; when on the defense, he holds back. Genaro was clearly the better player, but the score seems inflated. Bonet wasn't too upset though. The future for both is rather bleak. Genaro will never ever amount to much - he is too average a claycourter -, and Bonet even less so.

Ruben Bemelmans BEL [1] beat Francisco Fogues ESP 6-1 4-6 6-2

The score on the website says 6-0 in the first set, but it was 6-1. Saw Fogues in Scheveningen a few years ago, when he had quite a good run there. The guy is old and hasn't played in like forever. In fact, I wonder how and why he decided to play in Scheveningen. That said, he was playing quite solid tennis. His backhand slice is defensive and offensive at the same time. He was playing quite far behind the baseline and made few mistakes. Nevertheless, Ruben was easily the better player. The better player who had a clear off-day. I like Ruben a lot, but he should not be playing here. Clay is his worst surface, as the lefty's powerful baseline shots and good serve (the first serve percentage today was dreadful though) fare much much better on hard courts. He really unforced error-ed his way into a three-sets match here, when he should have closed it out in two quick sets. Loved his attitude though; he stayed calm and composed. And after the match, he decided to practise a bit more, as he was clearly unhappy about his game.

Unfortunately, Bemelmans going into a third set meant I missed all of Crugnola's match

Bruno Rodriguez MEX [7] beat Paul Moggré NED 2-6 6-3 6-4

Wow, if there was one player that was a complete let-down, it was Rodriguez. The guy was really bad :o Hitting unforced errors only and showing no signs of anything impressive whatsoever. I'd be surprised if he ever cracks the Top 150. Moggré was extremely pumped up for this match, and wasn't a bad player with a decent serve and ditto groundstrokes, but, really, there are tons of guys like him out there. I did not see the second and third sets of this, but it seems Rodriguez somehow turned it around. I doubt it was with good tennis though.

Lamine Ouahab ALG [2] beat Thomas Schoorel NED 3-6 6-2 6-2

The best tennis of the day was produced by these two guys. When I saw Schoorel for the first time last year, I concluded that this is a really really talented guy. He is very tall and lanky, with good groundstrokes. He needs to work on becoming more solid and he would really benefit from more experience. But in essence he has the basics all under control. Ouahab was too tough today, though. I think the Algerian can play better than he did today. He seemed very unhappy with the court and himself, but he was playing pretty well. He needs to focus more and needs to work on his fitness as well.

Random notes

Sijsling practised with Berankis today. And had many mishits. There wasn't anything particularly noteworthy about Berankis.

Apparently Labadze practised too. I didn't see him. Maybe he just wrote his name on the sign-up form.

Wessels and Van Gemerden hit the court together and were talking random stuff. Melle wasn't very happy with the way he was hitting.

None of the other players in the main draw were there today

Poor from Kamke, his service was Cipolla like.

Too funny that you say this :haha:

I was watching this match and was thinking that I finally found someone whose serve is worse than Flavio's :o And far worse too.

Am back already from Scheveningen as the weather was very bad. It started raining heavily after a few games of Hartfield vs. Pellerin, and I got very cold, so I decided to just go home, seeing as the match that I wanted to see already finished.

My notes on Edouard beating Kamke would be that it was impossible to play good tennis in these conditions. Soooo much wind. Edouard should have done much, much more with Kamke's poor serve though. He wasn't playing well, but in the end it was good enough.

Also saw half a set and the match tie-break of Frantzen & Fransen against Huta Galung & Wessels. Nothing too inspiring, but a good effort from the lesser-known team nonetheless. It seems safe to say that Jesse and Peter won't be a threat for the title though, unless they seriously step it up.

Where did you get the OOP from? The official site and the ATP still give me today's OOP

The forecast is pretty bad for tomorrow as well, but I heard that in the afternoon the showers will move eastward. It depends on the OOP whether I will go or not.

It's on the official site already! http://www.siemensopen.nl/2008/files/OP.pdf

Now it finally loads for me. Yeah, the OOP is very nice. Would like to see Muñoz de la Nava, Ferreiro, Ungur and Berankis play for the first time. And I'd like to watch Kubot, and Doud in doubles.

For sure it will rain tomorrow, but if the showers move eastward, it might not be too bad. I'll probably go tomorrow (seeing as I took the day off for it). It's not too long a trip for me anyway, and I don't have to pay travel expenses.

Are you going?

Middelkoop played all or nothing just hitting the balls back with 200 km/h . in the second set the ralleys were longer and I was able to put some pressure on him. After this set I thought it will be allright but I never expected that I was going to play so lousy in the third. Hey guys!

I went today, as the weather forecast was a little bit better than the previous days, and as it was my last day off. Well, the weather was indeed slightly better. It was still overcast and cold, but there was much less rain (only started in the late afternoon) and considerably less wind.

My findings:

Adrian Ungur ROU beat Franco Ferreiro BRA | 4-6 6-1 6-2

This match continued at 4-6 2-0 (though it seemed like 4-6 0-2 to Ferreiro from the website). I must say I was really impressed by Ungur. Before this tournament I always thought he must be some mediocre player, but he proved me wrong. He has a very fluent backhand and a solid forehand. He was much better than Ferreiro in the rallies and hit some very nice winners. Mostly, he just kept his cool throughout the match and was the best player that I saw today. Ferreiro also played well from the baseline, but got increasingly frustrated. His coach told him to be more professional :haha:

Daniel Muñoz de la Nava ESP beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin FRA | 6-7 (6) 6-3 6-2

The match was played on the court next to the Ungur-Ferreiro (and Ascione-Lopez Jaen) match. Obviously my main interest was this match, but the level was lower than the aforementioned match. Muñoz de la Nava is your typical claycourter, I guess, in the sense that he is very solid from the baseline and can't volley to save his life. I had to laugh at some volleys he produced during the warming-up. There are two notable exceptions to him being your average dirt lover: 1) he is a crafty lefty who 2) likes to hit amazing angles with his forehand every now and then. I have seen Edouard play plenty of times and there is no doubt in my mind that he is a far superior player to Muñoz de la Nava. Nevertheless, against Kamke he was crap and today he was also not very good. He made quite a few horrible unforced errors, including some truly dreadful smashes. He was also up a break in the first set, but gave that away. He squandered some break points early in the third set, when the games were all very long. Then towards the end, he didn't seem to want to fight, and went down 1-5 before finally trying to kick back. It was too late though. Still, it is safe to say that on any other surface, Muñoz de la Nava would have lost. Can't see the Spaniard having a genuine shot at the title to be honest.

Thierry Ascione FRA beat Miguel Angel Lopez Jaen ESP 6-3 1-6 6-2

So Ascione played on the court next to his friend Edouard. They also share the same coach, so that was quite interesting for him. He was allez-ing to both  Anyways, if Muñoz de la Nava is your typical dirtballer, Lopez Jaen is even more so. Despite his non-Spanish looks, he does little more than grind and grind. Ascione was superior in the first set, with aggressive tennis. He continued this aggressive style in the second set, but then missed pretty much every ball and got really really worked up :o Then he went up a break in the final set, but was immediately broken again himself. I left when Edouard's match finished though, so I had no idea Ascione actually won until I walked past the scoreboard on my way home.

Marco Crugnola ITA beat Lukasz Kubot POL 6-2 6-2

Lukasz :o :o :o :o :o That wasn't very good. He was completely outplayed by Marco today. And he served horribly. Marco, on the other hand, produced some marvelous tennis and showed what he was capable of. After a close first three or four games, he ran away with it. Both were a great sport though; it was good to see the friendly atmosphere. Anyways, Lukasz should be happy he won a match here. It was really more than could be expected considering the form he displayed today. Marco could actually go far playing the way he did today.

Ascione & Roger-Vasselin beat Moggré & Schoorel | 7-5 6-7 (7) 10-8

This match was stopped at 7-5 2-3 yesterday, and recommenced today with Edouard serving. He was broken, but then the Frenchies got back into it before losing it in the breaker. The level was shockingly poor, I must say. Thierry and Edouard are capable of so much more than this. That said, they were lucky Moggré was subpar and Schoorel produced some horrible mishits at bad times. Nevertheless, I really like Schoorel and he again showed that he is a real prospect. Every time I see him, I am impressed. Great attitude, great shots and he can still develop a lot too. To me, he's a sure Top 100 candidate in a few years' time. Anyways, after the Frenchies lost the breaker, they went down 3-8 in the super tie-break :ignore: Then they magically won seven points in a row to clinch the match. Edouard couldn't quite believe it himself and kind of had to laugh about it :haha: Not the best of tennis, but at least they got through. Crugnola and Ouahab will prove too tough if they play at this level tomorrow though.

Gil & Norman beat Delgado & Labadze | 6-3 6-7 (6) 10-8

This was played simultaneously as the abovementioned doubles match, and showcased much better doubles tennis. I was even impressed by Labadze's doubles skills, which I beforehand would have rated as nonexistent. Was also impressed by Delgado's second serve, which is much like a first serve really. It really was anybody's game, but the British-Georgian tandem threw away a lead in the super tie-break as Labadze got increasingly worked up. Norman had quite a fanbase, with his wife supporting a lot, and some other friends or family members present as well (plus his daughter, but she's too young to be supporting out loud ;)). This was really annoying Labadze, even though they were not too loud or out of order whatsoever. At one stage, he said that if you let your wife speak too much, you are ruined for the rest of your life :ignore: Even worse, he said that women should shut up, be in the kitchen and only open their mouth in the bedroom :ignore: I am not making it up :o He was too frustrated at that stage to help a focused Delgado win the match for them.

Greul & Kamke beat Kubot & Phau | 6-1 3-6 10-3

Only saw a few games of this, but it is safe to say that Lukasz carried his horrible singles form on in this match to produce some abysmal tennis. I really like Kubot, and think he is very talented, but today he just sucked. Big time. And Greul and Kamke are far from doubles starlets

Then I got sooo cold due to the never-ending rain that I left. Which was a wise decision, as not much later they cancelled play for the rest of the day.

I didn't watch the match. I didn't go to centre court at all, as the Dutchies don't interest me that much. I would have watched Thiemo, but Genaro-Martinez is  and it was on at the same time as Edouard.
