Antonio Veic cheering thread

I'm surprised that, until now, no one had started a cheering thread for Antonio. He's from the island of Losinj, plays right-handed and recently turned 20 years old (born in February 1988). He had a fairly unremarkable junior career but seems to be coming into his own now that he's on the pro tour. He has been moving up nicely in the rankings:

End of 2005: Unranked
End of 2006: 850
End of 2007: 455

This week--April 21, 2008--he reached a new career-high ranking of 403. Also, he's playing the $15K in Italy this week and has reached the SF. That means he'll break into the top 400, with a new career-high ranking somewhere in the 380s at least.

Let's wish Antonio best of luck on the pro tour!

Excellent result for Antonio. This is his second Futures final in a row. He'll move to around 370 if he loses in the final and to around 350 if he wins.

Good luck, Antonio!

Antonio won the tournament! He beat Vagnozzi, the 6th seed. He won the first set 6-2, then wasted six(!) set points and lost the second set 6-7(4) but recovered to win the third 6-3.

Antonio is now 9-1 in his last ten matches. He will reach a new career-high ranking of around 350. Just last week, he was ranked 449 so that'll be a jump of around 100 places in just two tournaments!

He seems destined for very good things. Could Veic become the newest Croatian tennis star? Stay tuned...

Don't forget that Futures results are processed one week late. Check next week's rankings and you'll see...

Didn't know that. Why is it like that?

The WTA does the same thing for women's tournaments of $25,000 and less. My guess is that the ATP and WTA can't rely on every small ITF tournament (some of which are probably pretty disorganized) to submit their results promptly by Sunday evening, in time for the weekly rankings to be processed and published early on Monday.

Antonio has beaten Kavčić in the first round of this week's Zagreb challenger, 76(2) 60. That's a good win for him. Next he has a very tough second-round match against the winner of Gremelmayer (#1 seed) and Bozoljac. Still, Antonio has already picked up nine points this week which will help his ranking nicely.

Antonio beat Gremelmeyer, the top seed, 76 10 (ret). He now has 14 ranking points, which means he'll reach a new career-high ranking of around 320 next week. He's moving up the rankings very quickly!!!

Wow cool :D

I finally saw him play against Riba. Doesn't have a typical Croatian game, likes long rallies, and pretty often wins them. He still lacks experience and that's why he lost. He obviously isn't a future top10 player, but if he improves a bit more he could reach top100.

Good win for Antonio today at Kosice challenger. In the first round, he beat Lukas Lacko (#3 seed, #164 in the world) 60 40 ret. There was probably something wrong with Lacko, since he didn't win a single game. Still, a win is a win.

In the next round, Antonio plays a qualifier, Guillermo Olaso. This is an excellent opportunity for Antonio to get to the QFs of a challenger tournament.

Good luck, Antonio!

Antonio is in the QFs of the challenger in Poland this week! In the first round he beat Rusevski easily, 63 60. In the second round he upset the #8 seed, Montcourt, in straight sets, 61 76.

With that result, Antonio will break into the top 300. Right now he's #313 but will go up to around 285-290.

Antonio is still young. He turned 20 four months ago. It's looking more and more to me like he could become a top 100 player!

Go, Antonio. Good luck!

Antonio is playing impressively. He won again today, beating the #4 seed, Greul, easily, 63 64. In the semis he'll play Santos-Gonzalez. Antonio is ranked a little bit higher, so while it might not be easy, he has a good chance to make it into the final.

This is easily Antonio's best career result. In next week's rankings, he'll move well into the top 300, at around 270 (if he loses tomorrow).

Best of luck to Antonio, and congratulations so far.

He will play against Montcourt in the first round in Umag. They have played twice this year, both won one match but Antonio won the last one 6-1 7-6. Hopefully he can repeat it.

...unfortunately he lost.....for sure he has a lot of potential, it's just a question of time when he's gonna break into the top 100.....

“The amount of experience was not the deciding element. It was my too big desire to win. My tension was enormous, I played pourly, forcing the ball. I did not feel comfortable on the court and my opponent used that against me” – said after
the match Veic. He continued: “I dreamt I was playing him and believed in my victory since I did defeat him three weeks ago on the Challenger in Poland. It was a great opportunity to win, but I forced myself too much. I was looking to score after three groundstrokes, and that wasthe wrong tactic against such a player. I was too nervous, this being my first ATP tournament. Had it
not be so, I am positive the final result would have been different. Key moment of the match? At 3:3, 40:15 to my advantage, I was finally starting to feel the ball when I lost my serve. I fought back to equalise 4:4, when I lost my serve again.” explained Antonio.

Antonio won last week's $15K in Iran. He was the #2 seed and won his five matches without losing a single set. He picked up 18 points, which will move him back into the top 300 in next week's rankings (to around #285, from #314 currently).

This week he's playing in another $15K in Iran and is into the finals, again without losing a set. In the finals he plays Valery RUDNEV (RUS). If Antonio loses he'll move up to ~265-270 and if he wins, to ~260-265. Antonio beat Rudnev pretty easily last week in the QF so this is definitely winnable.

I also see that Antonio is on the entry list for next week's $15K in Dubai. Hopefully his winning streak will continue and he can move into the top 250.

Antonio is on the verge of breaking into the top 200! After reaching the finals of the Monza challenger this past week, he moved up to a new career-high ranking of #203. He's by now the sixth highest-ranked Croat, behind Cilic, Karlovic, Ancic, Ljubicic and Karanusic.

He has a lot of points to defend over the next 2-3 months, though, so hopefully his good form will hold up. This week he's playing the challenger in Rome. In R1 he plays the #8 seed, Alexandre Sidorenko (#155).

Next he'll play Monfils, #12, who was two weeks ago in SF of Brisbane, where he lost to Stepanek in 3, but really struglled in first 3 round with players ranked betwen 50-70 place. Hope that Antionio will atleast make it competitive.

Antonio picked up 70 points at AO (25 by qualifying and 45 from one MD win). That's by far the most points he's won in a single tournament. He'll move up in the rankings from #224 to ~180, a new career-high.

Btw, Antonio reached the SF at this week's challenger in Ostrava. He lost to Dodig (it's a good thing Dodig won because he was defending points from having reached the final last year).
