I used to put some of my Simon stuff online in a sort of blog, here is the link for the videos:
http://gilles-simon.over-blog.com/0-categorie-10299122.html
Nothing new, I already posted most of them in the old thread too, but that way they're grouped together.

I was hoping this video would still be up. It's so sweet. :)
He was playing at a Polish Challenger in 2005.

In the category "mini-videos", you also have another classic when he's asked for an ATP report in Hamburg who will win the 2006 World Cup:

But what is the first thing Gilles says? I'm still not good at French ;)"J'ai pas compris" (he didn't understand the question first). But nothing wrong with your French, it's hard to understand.
I don't know why they kept that part, it's pointless and nobody gets what he says.

His reaction after the match, he doesn't look too crushed!
http://video.lequipe.fr/video/iLyROoafYvSB.html
He just explains that he got injured again in training with Marat and had not played since then. So against a solid claycourter who doesn't make errors, when you are unprepared and physically not well, that's the result!

The highlights video is from AMS.tv, so it's just a few points (and I don't always get their points selection), not the whole TB. But at least you can see the MP if you've missed it.

If you haven't seen the 3rd set, I'll try to convert the file or edit out some parts so it isn't too big. I'll take a look at it later.

I couldn't compress or edit the big file of the 3rd set to keep only the TB because I had an audio/video synchronization problem then, so I just uploaded the whole file, if anybody is interested:

I ripped my DVD of the Marseille final and tried a new filesharing service, which seemed amazing because it uploaded the big file in no time, but I hadn't realized it's more a Youtube service, you can't download it now. :-/
Here's the link I got:
http://www.eatlime.com/play_093576B0-FE71-48F3-1032-0288766D0081 (the match probably isn't complete because my browser crashed during the upload)

I was looking for a service like Megaupload. The file has 973 Mo, where can I upload it with a decent upload/download speed?
(The ripped file has "hiccups" anyway, maybe you can take a look at the first 10 minutes and tell me if you're interested in the big file before I upload it somewhere else. The pic quality of the MPEG4 file is a bit better, of course, but it's "sputtering" too at times.)

DiP and the TV5 guy were so embarrassing, at the end of the 1st set they started wondering how many titles Gilles had won already - and during the trophy ceremony, they started discussing if it was Benneteau's first ATP final and really had no clue of the answer.
I actually would have expected DiP to know about Gilles' 2 titles in 2007, but I can not believe they didn't even look it up before commenting the final?!

Sure, no problem.LOL Fran. Your english is better then mine and I'm a native speaker. Mind you I speak Canadian which is part American/part British.Oh thanks, but not at all! It's probably deceiving, I practice my English only on MTF, which means I can only *write* in English and I understand written English, but my listening comprehension is awful. I don't understand anything when I watch a movie or news on TV, for example.
My English is comparable with Gilles' when I have to speak. Or worse. Just ask Carlita, I met her in Hamburg and I was hardly able to carry on a conversation. ^^

Whe he says "in the 2nd set my game was in place", he means something like "settled", "organized", btw. Maybe: "I finally got my game together"? "Se mettre les idées en place" is "to get it together, to organize one's thoughts" - and he often says that about his game.

:rolls: Vintage Gilles and with his big hair. :rolls:

Whe he says "in the 2nd set my game was in place", he means something like "settled", "organized", btw. Maybe: "I finally got my game together"? "Se mettre les idées en place" is "to get it together, to organize one's thoughts" - and he often says that about his game.

Yes, I've heard players say that. :)

I practice my English only on MTF, which means I can only *write* in English and I understand written English, but my listening comprehension is awful.

Sounds like me with my French except I can only understand a little written French there's no way I can write French.

Thanks again for all your translations here. We all appreciate it.

He should lob a lot more, in my opinion. He does sometimes, but not often enough. As he's a good passer, sometimes he just tries the passing shot, while it would be so easier (and tactically better) to lob.
Once he does, once again in my opinion, he'll be even more dreadful. He should lob as often as Murray does, to me.

That's the one I was talking about with the hysterical French commentators.

If you want to see Poussin with his beautiful France outfit, here are a few games of the Canas match at the Olympics (sorry for the quality, it was actually more a test with a new compression tool).
Last game of the 1st set:
http://www.supernovatube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=375061b6f07b13761709
Last 2 games:
http://www.supernovatube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=a083fb58e9b745e5de0d

The stadium was so empty, it was one of the most depressing matches I've ever seen. The German commentator also kept saying "poor them having to play in such an atmosphere", "that's certainly not how they were imagining their first Olympic experience", "not even one of their teammates is there to watch them, etc."

Brego

They were more embarrassing than funny imo!

A series of videos about Tulasne and how he's coaching Gilles:
http://www.fft.fr/cms-fft/?id=4035
In French, of course.
They took their time to put it online at the FFT, it was filmed one year ago in Lyon after his knee injury.

It's very long, I've only watched the first 2 parts so far.
The first video is about the warm-up in general, it's not very interesting. The second one is better, he talks a little bit about Gilles' game, what he does well and not so well. Do you need a summary of that?

One thing made me laugh when he talks about the things Gilles needs to improve - he mentions his BH volley because he says Gilles still doesn't know if he should play it one-handed or two-handed! :o So he means they need to make a choice (indeed!) and they will probably tend to an one-handed BH volley.

jitterbug
09-06-2008, 03:45 PM
I didn't even know there's such a thing as a two-handed volley :o

Truc
09-06-2008, 05:00 PM
It's quite shocking sometimes how they're still considering starting working on basic parts of his game. He'll turn 24 in a few months!

Other things he needs to improve according to Tulasne are the audacity, the strength in the upper body to have more power in his serve and the confidence to finish off the matches because it's his problem sometimes.
So I'm still not impressed by the BH volley (although he does play it one-handed now :worship: ), but he has clearly improved on the other points mentioned by Tutu one year ago. (Even though he also means with "audace" the fact he shouldn't stay so far behind his baseline after a good shot and he can still improve a lot in that regard...)

Edit: I mean to remember now the German commentator poking fun at a very awkward double-handed volley of Gilles during Wimbledon, I'm not completely sure... But I won't rewatch that jewel of a match anyway.

Truc
09-06-2008, 07:18 PM
I listened to the rest. If you just want to spot the gf, you can see her at the beginning of number 7 or 10!

The "Paroles d'entraîneurs" series is about coaching in general, not about the players, so here are just some points concerning Gilles in particular:

Tulasne says again that Gilles often is too cool before a match - it takes him too much time to get into the match then and if he's broken right away on a quick surface, it's over already. It was very different with Seb and Paulo who were naturally very focused one hour before the match already. He has to force Gilles to do it, to discuss about the tactical choices again just before the match, about the attitude to have during the first game already, etc.
He wonders if Gilles really is that cool, though, or if it's more an evasion of the pressure.

Tulasne loves watching the matches of the future opponents to try to detect their weaknesses. And Gilles likes having as many informations as possible about his future opponent, his last results, his results on that surface, his results against players with a similar game, etc. Then they can think about the tactics since Gilles is a very tactical player who always has more than one gameplan for a match.

Gilles still is a player "under construction". In every regard: technically, tactically, physically, he could be more professional too. He's ranked #30 at that time and can still improve so much in every department, Tulasne is pretty sure he'll be able to establish himself in the top 20. "And once he'll be there, maybe he can try to get closer to the top 10."

Then he talks about the schedule which is very important to sustain the motivation. That's one of the first things he did when he started working with Gilles - to analyze if he was able to play 4-5 tournaments in a row with the same motivation, or if he should rather play 3 tournaments and then take one week off.
Unfortunately, he doesn't really say which conclusions they've come to, but it seems to me he encouraged him to play less tournaments to keep his motivation.

The role of the coach for him is to help the player to be as inventive as possible, off the court too, to enjoy his way of life, to enjoy the places where they play. He tries to make every day different for Gilles. The coach-player relationship is something unique for him, it's a "human adventure", that's what makes coaching so interesting in his opinion, etc. etc. etc.

The play of the week is in the post before!

They used some old stuff for their "Spotlight" video, the first part was recorded after his Marseille title - when he was not looking at his best on a shallow note and, more importantly, his answers are not really up-to-date. When he's asked about his favourite surface, he says he doesn't know since he plays well on hardcourt, but also played a final on clay last year (he means his first ATP final in Valencia in 2006).

His celebrations have improved a bit since Marseille.

Apparently Paulo is not his biggest fan...

He's saying that Gilles does not make him dream, he'd rather watch attacking game à la Federer.

I just saw that too. :rolls: His face and his attempt at eluding the question are hilarious.

They should really stop asking the guys about Gilles as he obviously pisses off half of the French tennis! :tape: Bennet, Seb... At least Paulo has a cute way to say it. "But well, he certainly makes some people dream, it takes all sorts to make a world."

He also made one of those lame Peugeot videos:
http://www.dailymotion.com/gptennislyon/video/x76bzk_a-bord-dune-807-avec-gilles-simon_sport

The girl asks him how he manages to string so many matches together and he says he has always played a lot, on the Futures tour already, he played 107 matches in one year.
So it's not that big a problem for him. But he has to admit that the matches on the main tour are much, much more intense than the matches he used to play.
And when he's asked about his best memory in Lyon, he says it's one of the first ATP events where he managed to qualify for the maindraw beating Enqvist in the process.
I'll spare you his anwer to the last question about the Peugeot cars. :o

Gilles in the 20 h news of TF1!
http://tf1.lci.fr/infos/sports/0,,4136166,00-gilles-simon-portrait-du-nouveau-n-1-du-tennis-francais-.html

The newsreader almost says he's "world number 1" instead of "French number 1".
People don't know him when they're asked on the street, of course.
Tulasne praises him again, he says that since he is a latebloomer and the success didn't come all of a sudden by the age of 18, he's perfectly ready for what is happening to him, and he also always analyzes everything very well, he's very simple, respectful, doesn't get crazy over the money, etc. etc.

The whole "French number 1" thing is a bit embarrassing since he might not be French number 1 anymore next week already imo, but never mind.

http://jt.france2.fr/player/20h/index-fr.php?jt=20081024&timeStamp=1910
(Click on "Tennis: Portrait de Gilles Simon" on the right)

This time they act as if everybody in Gerland was coming to see Gilles Simon. ^^
Nothing special, but it's funny. He's asked how one feels after having beaten Nadal: "Bien... très bien!"
They ask Jo about the fact that Gilles has passed him in the rankings and he answers "On se tire la bourre, c'est plutôt cool!" (some slang to say there is a nice competition between them and it's fun).

These highlights are so bad, they just keep a couple of winners, but don't show what really happened. I wanted to see again that horrible FH volley to give Andy a break right at the beginning of the match.
And then when he won a point in the 2nd set although he was lying on the ground and had dropped his racquet. He grasped his racquet again, played the next shot somehow and ended up winning the point.

:D I love his confidence and his analysis. I agree with him on the important points, I said it on GM that Murray was a bit lucky that Simon didn't play well during some of the break points he had.

Great vid' anyway, that's so representative of him, never in doubt that he's able to win the next game!

He's so lucid

A little translation for the members :

Poussin says that Murray makes it very hard for you to guess when he's going to make his tactical choices. Poussin couldn't read his game even if Murray's game follows the same pattern. Gilles recognizes that this is one thing he must improve : his attacks, his coming to the net. He had opportunities but couldn't take advantage of those, that's what he must improve. Murray was very solid in the key moments.

Stepanek ?? Very good at the net. Main tactical prospective : Make him stay back on the baseline.

And when he gets the towel, he laughs because they brought him a towel with his name written on it - "La classe!"

I can't stand Chang's continuous talk about God either, but Gilles always says he liked him just as a kid for his way to beat much stronger players. Otherwise he often says he had no models. I mean he sometimes answers he liked Safin too.

Hi everyone :) It's only my second post on MTF so I'm a bit shy, um... I just found this long interview of Gilles (around 10 minutes) and I don't think I saw it here in the previous posts so...

There it is (http://www.dailymotion.com/search/gilles%2Bsimon/video/x7bh40_interview-de-gilles-simon_sport)

It's in French, and I don't trust my English enough to fully translate it but I can try to write a highlight of it if you'd like to. It's a very nice and relaxed interview, Gilles seems to know and like the interviewer and jokes around a lot as well as provides very insightful and interesting opinions about his game, personnality, other players... Even if you don't speak French you might want to have a look since there is a lot of smiles and giggles in there ;)I just rewatched it to make a summary in English and it has to be the most adorable interview of Gilles Simon ever! The smile, the expression at the end... I'm quite :inlove: here.

I really recommend it if you speak French. Otherwise you'll have to do with the summary!

The interview was made on the "Black Friday" when he was overtaken in the Race after Fed pulled out in Bercy and not one single match went his way. He was at the Tennis National Cup in Cap d'Agde on that day and it starts with some blabla about the event (it's an amateur tournament, he means he likes to take part to this kind of events made for people who love tennis, etc.)

- You've been giving tons of interviews lately, is there a question you're really fed up with?
- If I'm going to qualify for the Masters Cup.
- Well, we'll get the answer very soon and you won't hear it any longer.

The journalist asks if he feels like an "UFO" in the world of the Masters contenders.
No, he really was thinking so far he had a great chance to go to Shanghai. Maybe just as the 1st alternate, but he had already planned everything with the idea that he was going to Shanghai. Now it seems he might be only #10 at the end of the week, so the situation is not easy. He really can't wait for the next 2-3 days to be over.
"Will it be a real disappointment if you don't go there? Or are you happy about your season anyway?"
It's been an awesome season anyway and it wasn't a goal for him at the beginning of the season, it would just be a great experience for next year. But he would be a little bit disappointed because of the context. It's a tad infuriating to be overtaken just before crossing the finish line. But that's sports. The ones who will go to Shanghai will definitely deserve it.

Then the journalist tells him he's been called the "Dhorasso" of tennis because of his attitude with the media, always giving long and well-argued answers, which is unusual (I don't know Dhorasso, but Google says it's a football player).
He answers he can't comment on that, he just finds it annoying to always be compared with other people. Everybody has his own world and personality, everybody is different.

The journalist asks him about the metapher of the gazelle in the savannah he used in his interview after the Nadal match (= he said that when he played the top players in the past, he used to feel like a gazelle who has to eat the lion alive - and things like that never happen in the savannah). The journalist says it's a great metapher, but it almost sounds like a marketing slogan, is it really spontaneous or does he think about the answers he will give during his press conferences? (The question is a bit weird!)
He says that's really how he felt. The comparison with the corrida was even stronger during the match, he really was feeling like a little bull during a corrida out there and had the impression at the end that the crowd had spared the life of the bull.

Then some questions about the "New Musketeers" (= Jo, Gilles, Gaël and Richard) as there are tons of articles about it in the French media. Are they really getting along that well?
Yes, they are. But of course the media are making a big deal out of it and also sometimes taking things out of context, watching out for some statement which will make it look like they're rather rivals, etc. But he means they're really getting along and nothing can delete the memories of all the time they spent in Roland-Garros together playing video games, etc.
They've followed a similar path, except maybe Richard who had his breakthrough before the others. They're kind of coming to the forefront at the same time with Jo and Gaël, so it appeals to people who would probably like this Davis Cup team.
Now they never talk about it themselves, it would be conceited from them to say they're the New Musketeers and they should be the new DC team. It's the job of the captain.

And Paulo?
His situation is a little bit difficult. But Gilles fully understands Paulo is pissed. He's caught between two generations, people often think he belongs to the other generation because he played with them. So he feels a bit forgotten now. Excluded. And it obviously hurts him. "But well, Paulo should also watch a little bit what he's saying sometimes."

Then a question about his stamina. He said in an interview last time he only has a great staying power because he doesn't waste a lot of energy on the court - "but if I go jogging with Nadal, Cañas and Monfils, I'm sure to implode." The journalist means Tulasne said it's not true, he can't follow Gilles when they go jogging. So why did he say that?
He means that's something they work a lot on when they enter the FFT by the age of 14, like he did. The FFT puts the emphasis on the stamina because that's something you can never really make up for if you haven't trained it as a teenager already. That's why he has a good staying power now indeed. But nothing outstanding and he hardly ever goes jogging. Just a couple of times during the winter, to keep himself fit.
He went jogging even more than the others when he was 14-18 years old because he wasn't among the best players at the FFT and he never was on the team nominated for the Orange Bowl etc. So he spent one more month working on his stamina in Paris while the other guys were in Florida!

Then a question about the BH volley. The journalist can't believe he started working on it at the beginning of 2008 only. How the hell can a top 30 player be unable to play a BH volley?
He laughs and means he really wasn't able to volley properly. It's funny because he was attacking quite a lot until the age of 18. He was so small compared to the others, he had no power and was unable to hit a winner from the baseline, he hated clay, for example, he was only playing on hardcourt and often charging the net because it was the only solution for him against much more powerful guys. He means he was quite deft at the net. But he had no strength in the arm, so he was playing double-handed volleys.
It is a real disadvantage and apart for Santoro maybe, it's quite impossible to volley like that. So they decided with Tulasne at the end of 2007 that he needed to switch to the one-handed volley and that's what they did at the beginning of the year.
Why not before? Because there were more important things to improve in his game.

What is the next goal for 2009: do well in Slams so Sébastien Grosjean has to shut up? Improve other parts of his game?
He says the goal will be to do better in Slams indeed because that's where he can improve the most - but not because of Seb, he only plays for himself.

And then at the end the journalist asks why he doesn't have an agent and he answers with a :hearts: smile that he has one, but she just gave birth two days ago, so he has to cope alone with all the media requests!

I don't think he will have a personal problem with Paulo. The part about Paulo is a bit summarized because I just copy&pasted my post from last time about it. But it is nice in the video, he explains in great detail why he understands his reaction, as the current number 5. There is no animosity, he smiles when he means Paulo should watch what he says to L'Equipe. Anybody with a bit of a clue knows why Paulo was a bit hurt and bitter at the end of the season. It's just a popular topic in the French media right now, it won't last.
Gilles has often sounded bitter in the past about the fact that nobody seemed to notice him, so he's in no position to criticize the others. :p
I mean, even Paulo and Gaël seem to get along now, so Paulo and Gilles shouldn't be a problem!

I don't know much about French tennis. What happened between Gael and Paulo?

I don't have any doubts these seemingly minor squabbles will go away, just like the DC tie against the U.S. I think the young generation of French players--although there are a lot of them in the top 100 and are competing for attention--genuinely get along with each other.
