Andy waited til almost the last possible minute to pull out of Monte Carlo, what a champ :)

Now he has 2 more weeks off til Rome, where he actually has some points to defend.

Then, brilliantly, he'll play 4 weeks in a row: Rome, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, RG.

One match Andy, come on you can do it :yeah:

Somebody smack rocketassist in GM for me please. :)

I found this old post on CH's blog defending the great American Monte-Carlo skipout. Good read.

First off, Houston is considered part of the early clay court season and American men play there, as do South Americans and Europeans in pretty high numbers. And they have over the years. The notion that Houston is not a real claycourt event simply because it doesn't happen on the continent of Europe supports a Eurocentric bias I want no part of.

And two, American men take a break after Houston before Rome, much like many Europeans take a break after Wimbledon before coming to the US to play the hardcourt season. Why is it okay for them but not for us?

Double standard is why. Because Americans don't fare well at Roland Garros, we are constantly looking for reasons other than the obvious--we don't like clay, we don't play well on it, and it's really not that big a deal, really.

There is no insult to the sport whatsoever.

And speaking of Roland Garros. Roddick has never missed Roland Garros when he's been eligible to play it. Not even when he had a bum ankle last year which he sustained at a claycourt event leading up to it. The same can't be said for top players from certain countries over the years regarding Wimbledon or the US Open. (In fact, Roddick has got to be on some kind of Slam streak: when WAS the last Slam wherein he didn't compete?)

I understand the need for the American men to take a break after the first quarter of the year and I'll never criticize them for it. Grass and hardcourts have become the bread and butter for many of our top male players and they want to be rested so that they can play the tournaments before Canada and Cincy that many of the European players skip or stay in Europe to play more on the mini clay season that takes place AFTER Wimbledon (something I've never really understood, but again, don't see much discussion or criticism about.)

If Roddick were to go to Europe right now, he'd be there through July (or back to the states after an early-round dismissal in Monte Carlo and then back to Europe for Rome) and then back to to the US to begin the grueling hardcourt summer. When do you suggest he take a break?

That he goes for Rome and Hamburg, two TMS claycourt events that lead up to Roland Garros, is more than enough. In fact, in 2003, the week before Roland Garros Roddick WON St. Poelten against Davydenko in the finals (in straight sets), Roddick's first title that year, and most American "journalists" didn't cover the event and don't include it on Roddick's list of claycourt accomplishments. Now that's an insult, if you ask me.

And there was nothing mysterious about the hamstring he pulled this year in Miami against Murray which kept him out of Houston, an event he's never missed prior. The man was limping like an invalid the day after his Davis Cup match and had the Bryans not closed out the tie, he would NOT have played the fourth rubber in North Carolina.

Rafa skipped Davis Cup with his mysterious foot injury so he could prepare for defending all the points he amassed on clay, but, by and large, he gets a pass because we understand where his priorities lie at this point in his career.

The top American men, who did play Houston, and were eliminated by "real claycourters" much as they would have in Valencia or Monte Carlo, don't deserve such harsh words for choosing to skip one single TMS event in Monte Carlo so early in the European campgaign that it would negatively affect their efforts later in the season.

And there really ought not be THREE TMS events leading up to Roland Garros. Federer and Nadal only play two. Roddick only plays two. What's the difference? What gives?

So you're right, there is no excuse for American men to skip Monte Carlo and other small events before Rome. But there sure is one hulluva damn good explanation for it.

Andy is slowly becoming a real estate mogul - he still owns the house in Boca that his friends live in, the house in Austin, the apartment in Manhattan... Now he just needs some undeveloped land in Colorado as an 'investment' and he's all set.

I don't understand why people are still surprised by Andy not playing Monte Carlo, he hasn't done it in years. He plays the same clay schedule every year lately (well stated by Deb in GM) and this routine sort of works for him. Playing Monte Carlo would have absolutely no affect on his RG results, let someone else have the points.

btw, Thread Goddess (whoever you are ;) ), I disagree with this title "Yay, Let's Just Win 1 Match at RG, k?" Clay Season Thread. Andy has shown us plenty of times that he is capable of winning one measley match at RG, but he has yet to show us that he can get to the QFs which we all know he's perfectly capable of doing if he would set his mind to it. :( I wish there was some way we could convince him that RG is really Davis Cup.

Hmm well I don't mean to brag (well yes I do cos I don't do it too often) but we were spoilt all week once again with good tennis from Monte Carlo. Yesterday's final was awesome yet I am confused as why Roger suddenly has these kind of melt downs oh well onwards and upwards.

At this time of year I am always surprised if an American plays on clay but well done to Sammy for beating Gasquet - no mean feat. Hmmm can't wait until Rome which begins next week.

Much as I'm glad to have tennis on my TV, since it doesn't happen often, I don't understand why they can't do a better job at MC. It's so difficult to see the ball and I lost count of the number of times they lost feed.

IMO, the only good thing about the clay season is that the grass season is just around the corner. Guess Andy and I have something in common after all

Deboogle!.
04-29-2008, 01:27 AM
I think that the conclusion in GM about the ball at MC is due to the camera angle that they have it at - when they do show the 2nd court it's not nearly as bad. Shame they can't fix that though, since it's so difficult to watch and you'd think they'd be aware of it after all these years!

kaylee
04-29-2008, 03:53 PM
That is what my coach was saying last night. Online the court isn't as dazzling so you can see the ball. However I think they should change the colour of the balls for clay court matches, black would be really good but that ain't gonna happen.

Deboogle!.
04-29-2008, 03:53 PM
No it's just the angle, and the exact color of the MC Courts which get a little orangey when it's sunny so the ball kind of blends in. They just need to move the camera

I'm sure we could rustle up an airfare between us londoners. And it shouldn't be a problem...i'll just start a petition or something. There's one for anything now! Or i'll do a sponsored walk. Not far, mind. From the computer to the living room. To be fair (or unfair), it's actually all in the same (albeit quite large) room. Hmmm. I might have to plan this better!

Odd weather? It was really sunny the other day, then it randomly started thundering and there was lightning. It was STILL sunny. Eh. Retarded, much?! :p

Absolute bullshit. That site is nearly a complete waste, except for one writer. What 'reports' say Andy is hurt, the voices in their heads? Wishful thinking? Boredom? This is even worse trash then the stunt they pulled during Miami, using the photos of Nole and Sharapova from the players party to suggest Nole was out late the night before his match.

New blog update from Doug!!

Hey everyone hello from Rome. Been here for a couple of days as we get ready for the Italian Open. Things are a little different this year here in Rome. The Center court that has been used for many year is no more. In the last year they have torn it down and started building a new center court. I have heard that the new court will have a retractable roof and may or may not be ready for next year. In the mean time the tournament has set up alot of temporary seats on a couple of courts to make up the difference. As usual Rome is a beautiful city and a great place to walk around. This is the start of the clay court season for Andy as we point toward the French Open. Andy has been working hard and I know he is ready to get his feet dirty and win some matches on Clay.
On a personnal note (I know Andy put the news in his blog) I have had a very eventful last few weeks. Some time at home gave me chance to spend time with family and friends and yes get engaged. I am a very lucky guy that Cori said yes and we are excited about planning a wedding in the future. Talk about life changing. This will be for sure.

How cute is that??

It doesn't look like a pretty much but I think Andy's tactics were smart - give Mardy all kinds of paces and spins and make him hit his flat shots off them - and he couldn't. Of course, he'll probably keep doing it in his future matches and then it will be bad ;)

RODDICK INTO 3RD ROUND

Andy Roddick blows Fish out of the water

When Andy Roddick opened his eyes this morning you know he was happy to see the sun shining. Not only because Rome under the sun is a lot better than Rome under the rain, but also and primarily becasue the playing conditions would be more to his liking. The bounce woudl be lower and the court would be faster.

Sure enough the court was fast and so was the first set. Fish who seemed to still be recovering from his 3 set battle versus Michael Llodra (7-5 3-6 7-6), could only watch the first set fly by. 6-1 Roddick.

Mardy Fish needed to switch it up in the second set or else he was going to go pack his bags a lot quicker than planned. And when confronted with yet another break point in the opening game of the second set it seemed as though the case was closed. The lower ranked of the two Americans (Fish is ranked 38th in the world, Roddick is ranked 6th) saved the break point and was able to hold serve. Finally! From then on it became a whole new ball game. Fish was up 2-1 and Roddick was playing catch up tennis. Roddick had to fight off the first break point against him. He did just that and folowed up with 2 aces to level the set at 2 all. And until 3-3 it looked as though Roddick would be tested in a major way. But that is when Fish decided to have a complete meltdown. The native of Minnesota dropped his serve in a luv game and gave Roddick the chance to go up 5-3. Which, of course he did. It was then just a matter of time before Roddick sealed the match 6-1 6-4 in 1h08 minutes.

RODDICK POST MATCH INTERVIEW

Andy Roddick's post match interview after beating his friend Mardy Fish:

Q. How did you feel today?
ANDY RODDICK: I feel pretty good. My goal was to you know, Mardy is an attacking playing player, and if he was going to attack make him do it from deep in the court, and I was able to do that. You know, I played pretty solid.

Q. How much time have you had on clay for the last couple weeks?
ANDY RODDICK: I mean, I've been training at home, but it is never really the same as an actual tournament atmosphere, especially coming from American clay courts trying to practice and coming over here. It's a little bit different. So, you know, it's good to be able to get through the first one so at least you're getting some matches in.

Q. Apparently there's been some discussion in the Spanish camp about where they're going to play the Davis Cup: Madrid or down by the coast. You guys have any preference about that?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I hadn't really been following, to be honest. I mean, it's three or four months away, so... There's a lot of the big events between now and then to be honest, so it's not something I think about daily. I'm sure wherever it is it's going to be fine. It's always nice when there's interest. I heard something like ten cities actually bid on it, you know. So any time there's that kind of, you know, attention drawn to tennis and that excitement it's not going to be a bad thing.

Q. What's the thing you like the most on clay, and which of the thing you dislike the most on clay?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I mean, I enjoy the challenge of clay. It's obviously probably my toughest surface, so, you know, that makes the wins that I do get that much more satisfying. What do I dislike? Obviously it's slower. It takes away a lot of my weapons which isn't fun, but that also plays into the first answer I gave you.

Q. Sam was saying in Monte Carlo that he found his serve could go through the surface and he enjoyed that, and he had more time to set himself up for his shots. Were you surprised that he did well in Monte Carlo first visit, and does any of that relate to you?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I mean, I think we're all surprised that he did that well. You know, as far as he has some bigger swings than I do. He doesn't really play in center court as much, so that probably makes sense. He has pretty loose strokes and big windups. As far as having more time, that would make sense for him. I don't really think we're outside of serving the ball hard, I don't really think we're that similar was as far as the way we play.

Q. You were saying the other day that you're prepared to stay over here the whole time through the French. In past years you've gone home between. What's different this year as far as your schedule?
ANDY RODDICK: You know, yeah.

Q. That's it?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah.

Q. Usually you go home between the two?
ANDY RODDICK: I have sometimes in the past; sometimes I've stayed. I've done each. But I'm here and I'm scheduled to play Hamburg. After that I'm scheduled to play Dusseldorf as well. I left that week open before, so, yeah.

Q. Maybe just putting a little more into the clay court season this year?
ANDY RODDICK: Just hanging out, man.

Watched the match, Mardy looked bad more than Andy looked good. I liked his game from the back of the court though, he hit some nice forehands, but mixed it in and flattened it out when he should of. Also the first serve percentage was very high, it's gonna have to be ridiculously high if he wants to have a chance at making at dent in this clay court season. Um, he probably beat Simon or Bolleli with any luck...but he just better try not to get embarrassed by Davy.

Roddick post match interview

Andy Roddick after his win over Simone Bolelli in post match press conference

Q. Pleased with that, Andy?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah. I thought it was good, you know. Especially I didn't get off to the best start, so to kind of work my way into the match, it was a little bit of a grind. I think it was close to two hours. The points he was winning I was making him come up with good stuff. Overall, I was pleased.

Q. Seemed to win the points that mattered.
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah. I mean, I got a little fortunate there in the tiebreak. I think at 5 All I hit an okay backhand, and he was lined up for a forehand and it took a funny bounce and went right on him. It was tough for him to adjust, and I actually got a couple of his balls on the top of the net that didn't go over for let cord. So the calls that got overruled gave me a first serve instead of a second serve. Overall, I was pretty lucky and fortunate with everything that went on in the match. :o

Q. How is your clay court game feeling after a couple matches here? Starting to feel comfortable out there?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, it feels good. I'm actually moving okay and I'm getting better height on the ball than I think I normally do. For me, it's just a matter of getting a couple matches, but I don't always give myself that opportunity.
It's nice to have gotten, you know, gotten along in the tournament a bit.

Q. Looking at the draw there, do you like what you see with no Nadal now in your half?
ANDY RODDICK: I think more so than that I like to see my name still up there, which isn't always the case here. So you can only play who's across from you. Obviously I think the last person anybody wants to play on clay is Nadal, regardless of what happened yesterday. Yeah, I mean, but I'm not good enough to look past the next match,:ras: so I'll just try to get through one more.

Q. I see Blake's also in the quarters. What's your relationship on tour? Do you guys train together? I know your Davis Cup teammates.
ANDY RODDICK: James and I, we're really good friends. We hang out all the time. I don't think being teammates stops when it's not a Davis Cup week.
You know, myself, James and Mardy and the Bryans, I think we're all kind of, in a way, each other's family on the road. I think we always support each other.
You know, who would have thought we would have a couple Americans making up a quarter of the draw in the quarterfinals. I guess if we landed on the moon we can figure out how to get to the quarterfinals of a clay court tournament, right? :spit: :rolls:

Q. Will be 26 this year. How much do you still think you can evolve as a player?
ANDY RODDICK: Hopefully a lot.

Q. Care to elaborate?
ANDY RODDICK: No. How much do you think you can evolve as a journalist? You look younger than me. :haha: :rolls:

Q. I am.
ANDY RODDICK: See, the world is yours. :spit: :haha:

Q. Talk about playing in Italy against an Italian. Is it fun to play in Italy against a local? How is it different from the States?
ANDY RODDICK: I think in the States I'm probably going to get a couple more claps than here. I mean, to be honest I was looking forward to the challenge.
I think that's where playing maybe away Davis Cup matches, matches on the road, have prepared me a little bit. You know, Davis Cup crowds are even more intense because it's not a player it's actually the country. But I don't think I mind it too much. I think the crowd was pretty fair. They cheered for their guy, and I think that's what you're supposed to do.

Q. What do you think of Bolelli? How do you see him in the future?
ANDY RODDICK: Well, I mean, he can hit every shot. He's very talented, there's no doubt about that. I think he needs to put himself in situations like today a little bit more. I don't know if he I they he wanted to win a lot in front of the home crowd. Maybe there was a little bit of pressure there. But he's only getting better, that's for sure. I think he had a really good week last week and played won his first couple matches here pretty convincingly. He's only going to get better.

Q. I think the last time so many Americans reached the quarters here
ANDY RODDICK: was 2002.

Q. When Agassi won.
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah. I think we had three that year.

Q. Yeah. You and James and Andre.
ANDY RODDICK: Would it be fair the only American that's lost lost to another American? It's like America on America crime. No, I'm sorry, what was the question? :haha: :rolls:

Q. The question is: Did you and James learn anything from Andre about how to play on clay?
ANDY RODDICK: I wish we would have learned more. But, you know, I think Andre was rare in the fact that the way he hit the ball as hard as he was able to and not give up in any ground at the baseline, that comes along once every ten, twenty years.
James is probably more capable of doing that than I am, but, you know, I think we I think the majority of what James and I learned from Andre probably didn't pertain to clay court tennis. You know, I think we learned a lot from him, but specifically that, I'm not sure.

Yesssssssssssss! A preview of USA vs Spain on clay, I'm really looking forward to this.

Andy beat Tommy on clay six years ago in 2002, which was also in the QFs of Rome, 6-4 7-6(2) .

How funny would it be if tomorrow's result was by the same scoreline?

I'm just thrilled that Andy actually got the semis, his best showing yet, that's a big achievement for him especially as he was coming into this tournament "cold". Nobody saw it coming, Andy just kind of snuck in there. It's like Dubai all over again. :D

He'll need special help from the Fate Gods to go further than the semis. Either way, I'm proud of him and I'm happy to see him so happy. :)

Well done today Andy! Always knew you would make the semis with that draw. :yeah: He made me very high up in the bracket challenge too, when I sucked in Monte Carlo! (:

As for tomorrow, I just want a good quality match between two of my favourite players and that will make me happy, since it's win-win for me.

vs Robredo

Andy played a great match tonight against Robredo in Rome. He really mixed up his serve and volley well. He kept Robredo guessing and volleyed great. Andy will have another opportunity tomorrow against Wawrinka.
