Berdych or Andreev. Who will make the Semis?

Berdych has been in very impressive form here, but he is due for a poor performance.

Andreev has done very well this tournament as well and he hasn't got past the QFs of a major tournament RG and Indian Wells his best before this one. They haven't played for 4 years and all their matches were on clay and Andreev has won 4 of them. 2 on Challengers and 2 on the Futures.

2003 Tampere CH, Clay Q Andreev 7-5 6-2
2003 Braunschweig CH, Clay S Andreev 6-7(7) 7-6(4) 6-0
2003 Italy F2, Frascati, Clay S Andreev 6-4 6-4
2003 Italy F1, Rome, Clay S Andreev 6-4 3-6 6-1

Bilbo, will be loving this match.

I think Ive picked Andreev to lose every match hes played this week, and Im sticking to that, Berdych in 2.

It will be the night match on the Stadium court, which I thought would be the Blake and Nadal one.

Pleasant surprise though.

its Berdych who is due for a stinker. he rarely has much to show once deep in a tournament.

Andreev is playing some good tennis. the courts are to his liking. i think Berdych may take a set but will fade away in the 3rd. Igor`s sledge hammer forehand will start to take its toll on Berdych.

this one is easy to call: Andreev in 3.

Well it will be interesting to see how windy it gets. If it's gusty at all, then Berdych will get shitty, not move his feet and either miss by metres or dump shots halfway up the net.

One thing about Andreev's shots are that they will come up a height that Berdych won't necessarily mind. First time they have played on a surface other than clay and the speed of the surface is fine for Berdych, it's more the elements and his mental state.

well if we go by today, the wind speed there now is exactly zero mph. the wind tends to die down there in the night.

i think its a tough call but i think Berdych is more of a mental midget than Igor.

i think Igor gets this one in 3.

Wait didn't he beat Gasquet last year in Gstaad in the QF? And then followed by an upset by Seppi in the SF.

I would love for Igor to go far in a hard court tournament but Berdych is too dominant lately.

Yes, that's right it was the semis that Seppi beat him and not the QFs.

I got it the first time, you don't need to say it twice.

An interesting note about Andreev, he's the last man to beat Nadal on clay before Nadal's clay streak(81).

CD - this is time for Birdshit to start playing better and to lose that moniker. It's make or break time. He's in the top 10.

Another note on Berdych, last year he made the SF of Monte Carlo and QF of Rome. Not bad clay results for supposedly "he's only good on fast courts" player? Also he won a clay title back in 2004.

I think Berdych will definitley win. Their H2H means nothing as it was five years ago and both are different players.

Come on Tomas!

That is not news, he can play well or awful on all surfaces.

night session = less wind and court is faster, it's all good for Berdych

Always is going to be very difficult to predict the outcome of a match with Berdych playing in it but I do think he is favourite here and he will not be bothered by the weight of shot of Andreev the way Canas was at times and I think the Czech will control more of the baseline rallies. I would go for him to win this one but if I was a betting man I would steer clear of the match.

two brainless ballbashers facing each other. it should be a funny match.

the stadium court is quicker than all the other courts. so i think berdych should clinch it.

Thanks for providing their challenger history, I didn't know that. Well, I think Berdych will win but he must play a relatively smart match, exploiting the Andreev backhand (and the gaps Igor leaves on court when he runs around his backhand to hit forehands). A key point will be how Tomas will return serve, Igor's serve might bother him a bit on this court.

Certainly the most interesting quarterfinal, hopefully it will be a good match.

Excersize for the reader:

1. Which other top-40 player plays like a mobile forehand bazooka, like Andreev?

2. What is this player's H2H record with Tomas Berdych?

I'll give a hint, the answer to question 2 is:

W 6-3 6-1
W 6-2 6-4
W 6-2 6-2

Yeah, I remember Gonzalez crushing Berdych in Madrid after Berdych had beaten Nadal, so you certainly make a good point.

^Gonzo hits a much flatter forehand compared to Igor and Birdman doesn't like playing flat hitters. He should have a much easier time dealing with the power topspin from Igor. This is Birdman's match to lose.

these guys will probably do battle again in 9 days in Moscow on clay in the Davis Cup QF, which gives this match even more importance...the winner will have the psychological edge for the next match

I doubt it, even if Tomas blows Igor away today Andreev will be the favourite for the DC match, even though it will be essential for the Czechs that Tomas wins that to stand any chance.

Between, even though I voted for Tomas in 2 if I was a betting man I would be on Igor given current odds.

Right after Nadal suffered heat exhaustion at Miami (in final against Federer).

Excuses, Nadal was fit enough to play Valencia and then of course he won Montecarlo and Barcelona in the two weeks following Valencia.
