If Roddick were to ever beat Federer, it would be now. Federer is not at his best, his movement is off due to mono and Roddick seemss to be playing well. He seems to have extra motivation. I think Roddick has some chance of winning but I still hope Federer pulls through. If Roddick were to beat him, that would be a major hit at his confidence.

We must have been seeing different matches:eek:

He's missing a lot, but he's playing much more aggressively than I've seen him play in a while (I didn't see him in Dubai). He's going for his shots more and is more aggressive. At the AO he was playing so defensively, I think he hit like 5 or 6 winners a match in his first two matches. He makes the other guy look like a genius on court.

Well, he did play more aggressively in Dubai, but in IW and Miami it hasn't been so much the case. It might be partly that the slow courts make it harder to play like he was in Dubai.

Actually, watching his match tonight I was kind of laughing about the way he was playing. Whereas most players use their topspin/flat backhands when they're on the offensive and use the slice when they're on defense, Roddick does the exact opposite: he usually just slices his backhand when he's in a neutral rally, but when he gets pulled off the court he goes for a flatter backhand, and more often than not, hits it into the net.

Anyway, the result of this match won't depend on how Roddick plays. Simply, if Federer plays like he usually does against Roddick, he wins; if the guy that lost to Fish last week shows up to this match, Federer is toast.

Roddick, for some reason, is Roger's best calibrating tool. Roger always relax and play his best against Andy.

Playing Roddick will get Federer into a good rythme. Roddick's groundies and movement are about 20% weaker than monoFed. Fed will just work on his baseline game against the RodBot.

Fed can skin the cat anyway he likes. he can also come in at will as Roddick is not exactly known to have the best passing shots around. this doesnt take into account the fact that Roddick is usually peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeing in his shorts when he sees Fed anyway.

and his crab infestation usually takes a quantum leap as he starts to scratch himself hopelessly.

i think it will be good for tennis if it happens. it will also give Roddick some hope for Wimbledon.

the more i think about the dynamics of this match the more realize that Roddick really does not have a prayer.

for one thing, Roddick needs much faster courts to have any chance at all. secondly, it is Fed.

Andy better be MUCH more aggressive if he wants to have any shot at all. The absolute worst thing he could do would be to get Federer grooved on his strokes by either suicidally charging the net or being content to rally with him. Nothing he did today makes me think he's got much of a shot, but he should already know that, so I expect him to at least try and be more aggressive against Roger. The bad news is it just happens to be a really bad match-up for him.

I think even if Roger is in a wheelchair he can beat Andy.. so if Roger loses then we really now know something is wrong with him. cos losing to Andy Roddick is just something Roger doesn't do.

I think this is bad news for the rest of the players though... Roger gets momentum and he destroys.. last year he got momentum after destroying andy roddick in Shangai and that same confidence made him give Nadal a beating of a life time. he destroyed the pig in less than an hour and went on to win the tournament... something tells me this tourney is going to follow the same pattern.. but it all depends on how easily he defeats roddick. Roger gets a lot of confidence after he destroys Andy, he's kind of like his power up bitch.

federer 6/4,6/1. roddick has been playing terrible. for some reason he wins dubai playing aggressively and then goes back to moonballing. its not just the court. im pretty sure blake and berdych among others have been flattening out their shots. it seems like when roddick does hit the flat forehand he misses. maybe if he would do it on a consistent basis he would make more of them.

Federer has spoilt us with his winning consistency... most other people are caught on a bad day FAR more often.

This doesn't mean he isn't the favourite (still is), just that you can't take any match for granted. Fish didn't even serve that well, like below 40%. So if Federer is going to play like that vs. Andy, there's no reason why he couldn't possibly lose - no matter the H2H.

forget about the Fish match. it was an aberration. when was the last time Fed lost 3 and 2? Fed was also not well.

Fish played well inside the baseline and was hitting his targets. Roddick tends to play behind the baseline and has more of a defensive posture. if he is not serving like he was in Dubai, this match is going to be a joke. just like the one in Shanghai.

this is not a hard concept to grasp. We want it to be crowded at the top with good players who have at least some variety in there game like Gasquet and Murray. If Roddick were to beat Federer, it would mean nothing other than that Federer is definitely on the decline. Roddick is barely beating players outside the top 50. Both Troicki and Benneteau could've beaten him. His game is boring to watch and he is an asshole on the court, I hope Federer steam rolls him.

Good to see Fed is still at 77% in the poll

because as soon as it dips above the 90% - absolute certain defeat, its a typical MTF curse.

i voted Roddick in 3 btw.

Bwawhahahha. Roddick is such a tool. He'll never make the top 4 again unless he starts winning a few rounds at Monte Carlo, Rome and Roland Garros.

Might as well throw Barcelona, Hamburg, Acapulco, Munich, Bucharest, and Casablanca in there, seeing as they have an equally probable chance of drawing the duck out onto the mud.

***

On the match, I don't really know what to expect. I haven't been able to watch Fed all tournament, but if he's still moving poorly, it could be a UE-fest grinder. That Roddick played pretty poorly against Berdych at USO '07 and then came out firing against Fed isn't a good sign either. Still, Roddick looked like moon-extraordinare from the forehand against Troicki, so I don't see a repeat of the Fish match as plausible, even if Fed shows in a wheelchair (which some would still overlook to say "Fed is done" upon Roddick taking this).

Roddick, for some reason, is Roger's best calibrating tool. Roger always relax and play his best against Andy.

You also have to consider that Roddick's game is ideal for his opponents to shine(cf Kolshreiber's 100+ winners against him in the last AO or Gasquet's 90 winners against him in the last Wimbledon)

I really don't know why many people are saying that this is Roddick's best chance to beat Federer. We all know that Roger never plays a shitty match vs Roddick. He always gets up when he faces Andy no matter what. Andy's best shot at beating Federer would have probably be in DUbai when Andy was actually playing incredible tennis and Roger was still shit.

Fed to cruise 6-3 6-3 and win the title . Good thing that clay is around the corner so we will likely still see many more Federer loses.:)

I would love to bet on Federer and jynx myself for all I'm worth. But I got no monies. Lost it all when I bet for Blake. I actually think I'm on a losing streak of like 7 matches in a row. Knew something was wrong when I kept losing money betting on Roddick's opponents in Dubai.

My losing streak began when I bet for Roddick to win against Soderling earlier this year. What the fuck.

Fish's feat is a double-edged sword for Roddick. In theory, it should pave the way for Roddick - if Fish could do it, why can't he? But, I think that the psychological strangle-hold that Federer has on Roddick will be the biggest factor. My prediction -7-6, 6-2 Federer. I would love to be proved wrong - for the sake of Roddick's sanity of course

yes, when a technically limited player beats the arguably most complete player that is good for tennis

because Fish has more weapons than Roddick from the baseline these days, Fish has a heavy bh which can be a real weapon

Andys bh is only use for keeping the ball in play and tbh i dont understand what happened to his fh which used to be big when he won the US Open

Federer is far from his best, but Roddick is back to playing like a baseline clown in Miami. Don't see him winning many rallies once again, he's too far behind the baseline and the court is slow.

I'd be surprised with anything other than a Federer victory in 2. Probably 7-6 6-4 or something. I'd be delighted to be wrong though.

It's funny to see Federer fans worried about Andy Roddick of all people. If Andy wins, I'll be gobsmaked. Andy's been playing terribly lately, and even when he's played his best, he hasn't beaten Federer. I won't say there is no chance because, you know, because lighting can strike anywhere, but the liklihood of such a win is very small.

he is 17-2 against Andy. has won the last 11 matches. the courts are a little slower here. do i need to go on?

Fed is loving this matchup. Andy is so psyched out of his mind about this match that he will be lucky if he can win 4 games.

That's true, but his matches so far this week have been poor performances, and repeats of those against Fed will not bode well for a result in his favor.

if Andy wins today, i will be among the first to celebrate. he really needs to get this monkey off his back and it makes tennis more interesting.

Fed just goes berserk against Andy. i dont see how Andy can take this match unless he gets all kind of help from Fed somehow.

Roddick will also have to play very aggressive brand of tennis which is more risky. that is the risk he has to take today.

Fed in 2 maybe 3 if Andy serves well in the first set...

Andy's has had his chances against Fed in the past but, his best chance at getting past Fed is not being on his side of the draw and letting someone who can play solid defense with a great backhand(or lefty forehand) take him out.

Exactly this is as good a chance as Andy will get to beat Federer while he is still a contender for slams.

I want to say Roger will still find a way to win, it seems like Roddick's game always suits him regarldless of poor form or lack of matches.
