Youzhny obviously didn't do that on purpose to trigger an injury time-out (he does come across as a fair guy) but it's got to be utterly annoying for Almagro to be serving for the match, tight game and then this :cuckoo: happens.

Too bad that Almagro could not serve it out.

Forehand to forehead makes Youzhny a YouTube hit

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP)—A tennis tantrum by Russian Mikhail Youzhny left him bloodied but made him a YouTube celebrity.

When Youzhny hit a backhand into the net during his third-round match Monday at the Sony Ericsson Open, he angrily whacked himself in the head three times with his racket strings. The forehand to the forehead sent a thick stream of blood running from above his hairline down his nose nearly to his mouth.

By Wednesday afternoon, video of the tantrum had drawn more than a half million hits on YouTube.

The episode occurred with Youzhny trailing 5-4 in the third set of his match against Nicolas Almagro. The 11th-ranked Youzhny went on to win in a third-set tiebreaker, then lost in the next round.

This is more mainstream media coverage than tennis has gotten in years. New ATP rule: Every time they hit a stupid shot, players must publicly inflict an injury upon themselves that will later be posted on the ATP website and youtube. Just watch, tennis will become the fastest growing sport in the world in no time.

Un-freaking believable  I saw it in the sport headlines and thought "here we go, channel 7 has been watching youtube"... now it's on every channel 7 news update during the evening too!

It's a guy hitting himself in the head.. it's not a headline story for goodness sake

Are you really surprised though? Our media is so focused on entertainment that it loses focus on whats really important. I don't watch commercial news anymore, it's full of crap. SBS World News has it's flaws, but at least it's actually informative and more rational in it's news.

That video actually made the top of YouTube's hits today.

M. Youzhny, making tennis even more popular since 2008

He's amazing! I love passionate, authentic, crazy players.

Now Misha, don't date Britney or Lindsay Lohan. You know, one time on perezhilton.com is enough! Don't become addicted to it! :o:devil::hug:

Youzhny "the Butcher" becomes a star of pop culture ;)
It's strange how Andy's engagement and now Misha beating himself up has been jumped on by the mainstream media. They're putting tennis on the map this week. I don't know if the sport is well represented this way but hey, the more viewers the better. :p

It's cool to see Misha's video hit 1 mil viewers. That video is the first tennis video I've seen on YouTube's front page since Novak's player impersonations.

Here's James Blake's reaction to it. I'd love to hear what the other players thought of Misha's tantrum.

"I saw that," said American world No.9 James Blake. "That was pretty funny – not for Mikhail, I'm sure. Mardy Fish does that. He punches the strings and ends up bleeding on his knuckles."

From ESPN:

Today I asked James Blake, who critiqued himself for being passive in his loss to Rafael Nadal, whether he'd been tempted to knock some sense into his head Youzhny-style. "My strings are strung way too tight,'' Blake said. "If I hit myself just with the strings I'd be bleeding. Mardy Fish does that. He punches the strings and ends up bleeding on his knuckles. I did that as a kid and I kind of stopped doing that. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.''

"Youzhny got over half a million hits on YouTube,'' Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald chimed in.

"Maybe I should -- maybe I'll get more popular,'' Blake said. " No, I don't think it's worth it.''

It was either - wack himself over the head with his racket or hit the next ball out of the stadium.......I think he probably made the right choice at the time. :smash:

This is more mainstream media coverage than tennis has gotten in years. New ATP rule: Every time they hit a stupid shot, players must publicly inflict an injury upon themselves that will later be posted on the ATP website and youtube. Just watch, tennis will become the fastest growing sport in the world in no time.
Careful, Don't be giving Mr. Disney any more crazy ideas.

Youzhny needs a psychotherapist.

Why would he need a psychiatrist? Just cause he over reacted? Guys are taking this out of hand.

Overreacting would be breaking your racket or screaming obscurities at the linesman, but hurting yourself like that is something else. Whether he needs a shrink or not is his business, but his behaviour is far from normal.

I was courtside for that match and was unaware at the time that I was witnessing tennis history. What was funny was that before resumiong play the ballboys had to come out and mop Youzhny's side of the court - like it was a basketball game.
Actually Almagro was in a bad mood long before the incident. Two latino-looking guys sitting beside me were supporting Youzhny and were verbally abused by Almagro when he came to the backboard to towel off.

But lost in all the hype is that this match contained one of the most exciting points I have ever seen. There must have been about five incredible gets in a row and ended when Youzhny made a diving volley and a surprised Almagro at the net pushed an easy volley into the open court just wide. In the middle of the point everyone was already on their feet screaming and the ovation continued for a long time, with Youzhny doing a victory lap at his end and Almagro draping himself over the net in despair. That point turned the match, never mind the blood-letting to come. It was a real gladiatorial fight to the death.

looking at that crazed Almagro with his crooked eyes does that to people.

all police photofits look like Almagro.

It was while sitting courtside at this match and seeing Almagro up close that I realised that Picasso only invented cubism by mistake. He was actually faithfully reproducing real Spanish faces, but no-one believed it.

What did they tell him to make him mad?

The strange thing is that they were well behaved and said nothing offensive at all. It just seemed to be that they were Latino and Almagro did not like them supporting Youzhny rather than a fellow hispanic. One of them was wearing a VENEZUELA track suit top. Maybe it is the new Venezuela - communist first, latino second:o

Your joke is too old... the communism collapsed 20 years ago and a new generation has nothing to do with it.

But it's nice to see some Venezuela and other Latino’s tennis fans thinking outside the box. ;)

Almagro is definitely a funny cat in his own way. When he won in Acapulco, he thanked a heckler in the crowd who was giving him the treatment throughout.
