What happened? Had to go to deal with the taxes after the 1st set, go back and see a match summary via livestream. Any injury or something?

Soldering was awful. Something was wrong with him. Federer played well enough, but he still looks flat to me. Congrats to Roger and his fans :).

1st set was more about getting used to the swirling wind so I wasn't surprised that both didn't play well. Roger's fh and forecourt game started to click a bit more in the 2nd.

Weird match..

I guess the conditions were indeed tricky, both men looked uncomfortable there, sort of affected the play I felt..

Roger's serve was decent, not much else to say... Other than that, it was about Robin's errors, and he barely got a first serve throughout the match. I think his retire was a bit confusing as well.

"Win is a win" for Roger.

How`s it possible to get a heat exhaustion in 40 minutes? How long did Kolya play, 2,5 hours?

It was windy enough - you could see it from the way the leaves moved on the palm trees.

At this level, Robin should not be getting heat exhaustion in such a short amount of time if he was healthy coming into the match.

What did he do then to get broken back by the Toad?

According to a quick interview on the swedish eurosport site, Robin felt ill and tired, hence he tried to finish every point off as quick as possible. Dear oh dear.

I think Davydenko's game was the first of the day. It started 10:30/11:00. Correct me if I am wrong about Miami weather, but I think it was cooler then.

Toad was ill before the match. They said on Sky that he had taken paracetemol before the match.

This match had it all: shanks, lack of effort, poor returning, UEs ... Shame Toad had to retire. This had all the makings of a classic :yeah:

Russia might get hot but it's not humid like Miami, and the parts of Sweden on the baltic are definitely muggier than anywhere in European Russia aside from the coast of the Black sea. It's not heat that saps your strength but the high humidity does. The difference between I.W. and Miami is the humidity factor and the altitude. That's why very rarely you find players winning both back to back as Federer did twice.
I watched the whole match and the wind was a factor and affected the quality of play. I can't understand why Soderling retired so suddenly. After Federer was 3-0 I went off to get a bite to eat and lo and behold the match was over. It explains it if he was ill before the match started but he didn't show any signs on the court except not coming to grips with the situation.
Anyway good for Federer. Congrats a win is a win.

I think DT was talking about winning IW and Miami back to back, not necessarily twice, in which case Agassi and Rios are two others to have pulled that off, off the top of my head.

Exactly... he almost lost in Halle 2005. There would be no grass streak if it happened.

Anyway, Federer has spoit most of us with his constant winning, you sort of take his wins for granted. As if those matches win themselves alone, automagically. It takes matches like the one with Fish to realize what it means to lose only like 4-5 matches a year, and for several years in a row.
