She's only 20. I'm probably in the minority here, but I feel like, why can't these tennis players find someone their own age to date? It's not as bad as Philippoussis and his (barely legal) girlfriend, or Stepanek and Vaidisova, but it still weirds me out a little. I mean, 20 seems pretty young to be getting married.

It think when he's 35 and she's 20 it's a lot for them to get married. If he were 30 and she were 25 then it would be different.

Yeah, I agree. Thirty and 25 is different. But a 25-year-old and a 20-year-old getting married? I just don't see it lasting very long. Most 20-year-olds just aren't ready to get married. And that's not to mention that she's a model, so right off the bat, the chances of it working out in the long-run go way down.

I'm happy for him. Nobody here knows anything about their relationship or how they feel about each other, so any speculation about the long-term prospects of their marriage is pointless. It may be the case that they'll be attending a ceremony for past players together in 25 years, or it may be that they won't be together this time next year. Whatever the case, I'm glad that they're happy now. Everyone deserves that.

One of my best friends is certainly not a celebrity and got engaged - right around her 18th birthday - a month after meeting her now-husband, who was 24 at the time. I met my husband when I was 18 and he was 28. He proposed within 2 months. My parents wouldn't give consent, said I was too young, the age difference was too great, it would never last.

We married as soon as I was 21 (the age of majority at that time) and have been married for over 45 years.

So, 20 and 25? Pah. Nothing.

Maybe your 3-year wait helped your marriage last this long ? I mean, you had time to think about it and get ready, whereas wedding after only a few months might have brought some desillusions...

Besides, it's kinda obvious age gap doesn't always mean the same : a 3 year older brother seems soooo much older and wiser when you 10 than when you're 30. When you're 18, 21 or 25, you're at a different stage of life, your "path" is more or less defined, and that does matter, I think.

I second that and certainly not with someone you've barely known for a year :)

It's going ok with Lleyton and Bec so far.

Anyway, I knew a couple who dated for 11 years, got married and were separated 4 months later, so I think that there's no one way to go about marriage. There are any number of successful marriages where the courtship was amazingly short and the couples married young. I know a couple in town who got married at ages 19 and 16 after a short time of dating. They are nearly 70 years old now and still married to each other.

I have a sort of dim view of taking off your clothes for the camera, so I wouldn't be thrilled if he were my son, but, on the other hand, maybe she is a delightful girl. It's not going to affect my life one way or the other, so I really don't care. I just wish Andy happy.

Someone that age is easier to manipulate and more willing to conform their personalities, likes, and goals to fit that of their partner for the sake of the 'relationship'. I suppose she has the sort of passive parents that feel if she is old enough to model in SI, she is old enough to make major life decisions like getting married.

She should take a second look at this situation, because she can't be beautiful forever and might actually need some sort of education in case things with Andy do not work out and she is a divorcee. There is nothing worse than having to depend on a man for money.

There is no set time between engagement and marriage. You can be engaged for a few years before actually getting hitched. Plus, like mentioned earlier, there's only a 5 year difference between them, nothing huge or anything like that. Good for them and wish them the best if its true.

Yes..models photos are photoshopped. SI's Swimsuit edition is very different from the late 80s and early 90s edition when the girls had very low body fat and concave tummys. The current crop of models is bigger in the midsection (not fat, just not as curvy); they even stuck Beyonce in the issue last year and she is way too chubby to be modeling a bikini.

03-31-2008, 11:01 PM
Actually, she and all her siblings took their mother's name when they moved with their (newly divorced) mother to California from Italy. Considering they were all very young at the time I doubt it was done for "attention."

I disagree. They wanted people to know who they were related to, it makes things easier when trying to get jobs, get into schools (say for instance that good private grammer school or that hard to get into enriched public grammer school that most people get wait listed for), network with the right people (i.e. people in positions of power don't want to meet nobodies starting out, but the grandchild of a powerful person will be acknowledged with a hello and a handshake) and in everything related to trying to climb the ladder to success. I know you live in the Bay Area, but I live in LA and the right last name here makes it easier for people. I've seen it first hand. The kids of film royalty do not get in line with everyone else, they are ushered to the front and that last name is what gets them the chance to get in the room to be seen by decision makers. They still have to be able to 'do the work', so I will give Giada that, but that is all. Her grandfather's name was absolutely invaluable in greasing the wheels of her success.

It's going ok with Lleyton and Bec so far.

Bec was the one willing to bend. She quit her tv show and is a fulltime wife and mom now. She had a very nice career that she walked away from. If Brooklyn is willing to walk away from career to be a fulltime wife, i.e. travel with Andy all the time, it will work.

Who is Gidia?

She has a cooking tv show on the Food Network and appears on the Today Show in the US. She also has cookbooks out. Her grandfather was a big shot in the film industry, so she had an automatic 'in', i.e. like a wildcard into at ATP tournament, when she was launching her career as a star 'cook'. Have you ever heard of Rachel Ray? She is in the same category as Giada, but way more successful, sans the well connected big time family name. Rachel earned her success the hard way.

:spit: If their name was so powerful why would they need it to succeed in LA, when they already have success built up around them? If you know even just a bit of her family biography you should know that they were never strapped for cash or needing to "use" their name for fame or jobs. I would also point out that Giada was a very reluctant entrant into show business - she did not want to follow the family's footsteps at all, which is part of the reason why she went into food and catering in the first place. It's pretty common knowledge to those who follow her that she hated being in front of the camera and was not very happy in her first year at Food Network.

Also, I dunno what you being in LA has to do with her bio - my mom lives in LA and I'm down there all the time. Obviously rich families have a very noticeable advantage, but that applies to all rich families, and I'm fairly certain Giada wasn't the one who decided as a child to change her name to increase her future successes.

Maybe I'm just a realistic person rather than a romantic or emotional person (which I guess is very rare for a teenager) but I think it's a bad idea to get married when you have been together for like 7 months. I have always chosen brain over heart and so far, it's taken me far.

My best friend just turned 19 in February. She's graduated from high school and is now in community college. She's is dating a guy who is 18 and a senior in high school. They've been dating the same amount of time. Now they want to get married. She plans on marrying him and moving to another state while he is in basic training for the army.

I tell her to wait, but what I really want to tell her is, "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FREAKIN' MIND!! You're just 19 years old; you go to community college; you work at a movie theatre; he cursed out your mother; he's in high school; he walked out on his last job for no reason; he is jealous of your friends... but you want to marry him?"

Most young women are just like you from what I've seen. The grounded ones will be the ones who get married and are happy with their decision. The others? Good luck. You've got a hard road in front of you.

Now they want to get married. She plans on marrying him and moving to another state while he is in basic training for the army.

Sounds like an excellent plan. She's gonna get married have his babies, and be supported by him. Military is an excellent career plan for young men if they have the desire and the willingness to do so.

Yes..models photos are photoshopped. SI's Swimsuit edition is very different from the late 80s and early 90s edition when the girls have very low body fat and concave tummys. The current crop of models is bigger in the midsection (not fat, just not as curvy); they even stuck Beyonce in the issue last year and she is way too chubby to be modeling a bikini.

That looks pretty good I'd say. But in the end it all comes down to one's personalty rather than one's looks. Hope the lady indeed has the personality more than anything else.

I just think young people getting married, in general, is dumb. :rolleyes:But the thing is, you KNOW your friend. We don't know Andy. He's had long-term serious relationships before, he grew up in a stable home with both his parents and his brother - a happily married man who's only 32 and has been married for several years - travels with him. His other brother went through what sounds like was a pretty nasty divorce, so he's seen it all, he's not stupid, he knows why marriages fail and why they succeed. Brooklyn may be young, but she has a career, she lives on her own, she's traveled the world, and she's had time to figure herself out, unlike a lot of girls who get married young. The point is that it's easy to say "wow she's too young" or whatever, but at the end of the day, we don't know her at all and have no idea if she's ready for this kind of step. For her sake, for Andy's, I hope so. but it's their thing, we can't presume to know them well enough to judge :shrug:That looks pretty good I'd say. But in the end it all comes down to one's personalty rather than one's looks. Hope the lady indeed has the personality more than anything else.Obviously I have not met her, but everything I've seen suggests she's a nice girl from the South who likes sports and has a really fun sense of humor.

Well, from BGT's description, it certainly doesn't sound like a good course of action to me. Even if he has a life goal (which I don't believe BGT explicitly said), he could still make her life miserable. If he cursed out her mother, it's pretty likely he'll treat her with the same amount of respect. It sounds like a bad situation to me.

An interview with:
ANDY RODDICK

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. From People Magazine.
ANDY RODDICK: Oh.

Q. It's begun. It started.
ANDY RODDICK: Thanks for breaking the news. Appreciate it.

Q. We wanted to know how you popped the question, where you were? Did you get down on one knee and what kind of ring you had. Just little details like that?
ANDY RODDICK: Just little details I'll probably keep to myself. It's our business. It was nice.
I got down on a knee, but I think the details we'll keep close to our family and friends. Thanks.

Q. Do you have at least a date that you did it?
ANDY RODDICK: Couple weeks ago.

Q. So does it feel any different to be an engaged man other than, you know, questions in People Magazine and all that?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah. I think so. I think it's a life choice, so it is a bit different. I think I lost half my fan base today.

Q. You did. I think so.
ANDY RODDICK: No, but, you know, I'm happy, and, you know, Ivo Minar played the same way. I don't think he really cared. (laughter.)
That was my main concern today.

Q. I think he was trying to give you an easy win.
ANDY RODDICK: Then I'll take it. Apparently I should have done it sooner, then.
THE MODERATOR: Are there any tennis questions, by chance?
.........................

Q. You know what the ups and downs are of being in the spotlight, and I know Brooklyn has been in the spotlight herself. But do you feel like she knows what she's in for?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah. You know, she's a very, very smart girl, so I think ‑‑ I think so. But, you know, to be honest, I think it's big news today. I don't know if it will be big news next week.

Q. Are you and Mardy going to share wedding planning tips and stuff?
ANDY RODDICK: Hopefully that's ‑‑ I was just trying to take heat off Mardy. Hopefully they can talk wedding plans and maybe we can go do golf or something.

Q. Who introduced you?
ANDY RODDICK: Guys, let's get to tennis, please.

What a pity.

Earning plenty of money as a model and then marrying a multi-millionaire like Andy Roddick.

Life is tough.

The only models that make millions are the household names like Gisele or Heidi Klum. A model that is not a household name, but books many runway shows would make nearly $100k a year. A model whose biggest modeling assignment to date is a swimsuit appearance is not making much. I know a model who has appeared in national print ads for Sure deodorant, Jerry's Bridal, Abercrombie and Fitch, and several others and she made $19k last year. Brooklyn is in no way making a fortune. The model I know lets her boyfriend pay for basically everything and whatever she makes they use for having fun.

Sounds like a difficult life. :)

I think you missed my point. I don't see why it's bad for a wife to expect to be provided for by her husband. It does require trust on her part, but I think that's essential for any marriage to work. You can't always be looking over your shoulder.

I honestly believe any man worth his salt would feel honoured by this sign of trust from his wife.

I tend to not have sympathy for people when they make their own mistakes. I'm not gonna say, "I told you so" but I'm gonna tell her the truth if it comes to that. Sorry, it's an acquired personality trait from my father's side of the family. We're all cold.

Friends need to be honest with one another even if it hurts.

No, the girls look similar. Both tall, blonde (Mandy initially), big eyes, cute short nose, and nice lips. There is a definite look he likes for women he chooses to have deeper involvements with. They are both cute, but not drop dead beautiful.

i was going to say 1 year, but since duck is traveling most of the year, and she works as a model, they won't be together often...so 2 years = 1 year for other marriages..

of course, she might do a bec cartwright and just travel w/ her husband all the time...

Q. One of your former neighbors, Andy Roddick, got himself engaged yesterday. What is your reaction to that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Oh, jeez. I couldn't believe it when he told me. It was like, Are you ‑‑ I thought he was joking. He's engaged to a really nice girl.

Q. You know her?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, she's a great person. I've never seen him happier, so I'm really happy for him.

Nice :)

Wish him all the luck

But why all website keep saying that she is supermodel or something , she's just a swimsuit model nothing special, she's cute and can have fun personality(but she is nowhere near Gisele considering look, Gisele is extreme beauty, the most wonderfull women I've ever seen:PP), but she can leave her career without any regert because there is not career. It's nothing like Brook Shields, or even Bec who was superstar in Australia and still she left job. So I don't think they would have problem with marriage,

All,

Some of yous are just - fill in the blank.

I wish Andy and Brooklyn a long and happy marriage. And a five year difference isn't bad at tall. Read up on how young they married them off centuries ago. We are talking about ages 13/14 here.

Rock on Andy.

Someone else suggested that on the thread and I think is what they are going to do. At least she is smart enough to get a ring first, before giving up her career; Sampras' poor ex Delaina spent years on the road with him and got zilch in the end (some sort of financial settlement), but no marriage.

I agree, plus she's the type the media loves e.g. white and blonde but not blue eyed in this case. Actually I think her face is ugly, but her body is nice, not the best, but okay. Better than mine anyway, but not the type of body I'd want.

'Trained'? Do any of those women get work after they leave that show? Even the winners seem to end up on the backs of milk cartons. The one that I've seen most working after that show or outside of that show is Ya-Ya.

Joanna House had a show on Style for a few weeks. Sarah, the tall blond, did a bit of work for some catalogue. That was commercial, not high fashion. The ones on Nigel Barker's and Jay Emanuel's websites don't count.

Have you seen them anywhere?

They're trained. They aren't actually guaranteed work unless they win, which is kinda sad. I've seen Dani in a CG commercial with Queen Latifah and with Akademics. I've seen Jade with Apple Bottoms. I've seen Eugena with South Pole and JCPenney. I guess it depends on the girl if she can get work after the show. Sad situation for them though.

Well, I agree wtih you that there are much prettier girls out there. I think she has kind of a "duck" face -- you know, which may be the reason he wanted to meet her  But anyway, people get more attractive or less attractive based on their personalities, so it doesn't matter if she looks like Eleanor Roosevelt or Angelina Jolie as long as Andy finds her beautiful in all the ways that matter to him.

Actually, she and all her siblings took their mother's name when they moved with their (newly divorced) mother to California from Italy. Considering they were all very young at the time I doubt it was done for "attention."

Sorry for the non-tennis everyone. :o :tape:

Too bad I can't goodrep you. :p
