Edited. As for the match - yeah, his slice was pathetic, but Cañas couldnät do much with it most of the time. He had numerous occasions to win both sets.

In no way should he have won in 2. He shouldn't have won it at all. I don't care how many amazing winners from impossible positions he hit. Those don't matter. Canas didn't need to do any of that.

Ya gotta hand it to Gonzalez, no one melts down quite like he does. The whole match I was just waiting for the wheels to fall off, because they always do with him. Loses his fool head.

One match where the stats don't seem to tell the whole story. Willy played an incredibly clean match...with more aces and winners to unforced errors. Gonzo seemed ahead the whole time, and lost almost every big point.

Gonzo :silly: it was not a crap match from Gonzo, it was just silly, I mean:

wasting 4 SP in the first set and then serving for the 2nd at *5-4, playing the best shots (compared to Cañas), lots of winners, not so many UE, and still losing

but well, it's a Gonzalez match... do you really expected more??? :o

While this was disappointing for Gonzo a lot of credit should be given to Willy. He was incredible at holding his nerves and had some good play too. Well done. There were two guys out there tonight- and Willy was a factor in the result. He seems to want to defend his points.

he is old and slow now but he does fight and just wont give up. meanwhile Gonzo is in decline. its also time to get rid of Larry Sefanki (Gonzo`s long time coach) who has outlived his use.

and yes he won.

"Ghost zalez" is pretty accurate, at least after that chump yelled during his serve. He was dictating points in the first set and even for spurts in the second, forcing Canas around and then hitting winners to the open court, earning himself break points and eventually 4 set points (in the first), but he couldn't capitalize. Canas survives the one he gets in the tiebreak and that's the end of set one, one which Gonzalez should have taken.

It was the same story the second set, Gonzalez blowing the last four games (at 5-2, his brain seemed to turn off even though he'd just held), and while the end result is disappointing, the level of play was fairly good, making the lack of a third set all the more painful. The crowd was totally into it, the players were a little more chirpy than desired, and the linesman were a little more erroneous than hoped for. All of this added to a fantastic and tense atmosphere, kind of reminiscent of the Nadal-Ferrer USO R4 match from last year. Fun match, again despite the lopsided outcome.

He smashed his racquet? We finally get an entire match on TV that I want to see, on the suddenly added evening Tennis Channel coverage via the Masters Series feed, and I missed the racquet smashing? Did it happen during the commercial break between sets, or did I blink at the wrong time? I really look forward to his racquet smashing. A Fernando Gonzalez match just isn't complete without it.

The match had everything else though. He looked gorgeous, lots of sexy shorts lifts, amazing shots, everything I wanted, well, other than he lost. But I find I can enjoy his matches almost as much even if he loses because he's so exciting to watch.

I cannot understand why a lot of people here are mentioning that Gonzo's game is on decline judging by THIS match in particular??? this match??? I mean, seriously, this match??? c'mon!!!!! it was a very tight and tought match and the biggest fault of Gonzo was not taking his opportunities and taking silly decisions on important points (SPs and serving for set). There's a lot of matches in the past (example AO against Cilic, Korolev in Las Vegas and many others from the past year) that you can claim that Gonzalez is on decline, but you cannot be serious to say that when the guy was hitting today the best shots of both players. :o

Canas hasn't slowed down at all, not sure what sport you are watching. Hewitt isn't as fast as he was, but that's not the case with Canas.

As with Gonzalez's game in decline, not on this performance. He had one big period of consistent results and that's it, so relatively he is back to the previous level he was at before.

best match in Miami I've seen so far, great intensity during the whole match :yeah:

Gonzo had a solid gameplan from the start, trying to bring Cañas to the net (take him off his comfort zone) with his backhand slice and then pass him. Also not go for too much and wait for the right opportunity to unleash the forehand. It worked well in the first set, Willy was feeling the pressure and was a bit tight, not able to play his own game. Gonzo just failed to take his chances, though Cañas played the key points really well.

On his first set point in the first set, Gonzalez made the worst chip and charge attempt that I've ever seen. It made Roddick's approaches versus Federer at last year's Australian Open look good. While this technically was not an unforced error, it was clearly suboptimal play. And as always with Gonzalez, there are numerous other examples of retarded decisions like the above.

I rewatched the end of the first set, and Gonzalez is just starting to smash the racquet when they cut to Cañas, then they go to a commercial. When they come back we see Gonzalez picking up tiny little pieces of what was the racquet. I missed my favorite part, when he goes over to retrieve the smashed racquet and take it to his bag.
