any win for fed, nowdays, is a good one.
well done.
wasn't playing close to his best, but good enough to win without any special difficulty against the talented gael.

A match of contrasting sets, to say the least.

First set: 3 points lost on serve, 0 breakpoints faced.
Second set: 16 points lost on serve (to Monfils' 10), 7 breakpoints faced, including a 0-40 deficit.

Well, Gael had his chances thats a good sign. Hopefully he can take advantage next time. And in his next tourney maybe he can get a favorable draw for once.

Fed's been fairly shit at saving break points lately so this is a good IMO. Keep it going. :D

The usual :retard: service game from Roger once he got a comfortable lead. I'll refrain from using the smashing smiley since he played well to save all of them and took both BPs on Monfils serve.
Not incredible tennis but he played pretty well for a set and a half

Well in AO and IW this year, he started out with great wins but then played terrible matches to lose. So too soon to talk about his form:D

Search for my posts after the first few rounds at IW I was among the pessimists who thought it didn't mean anything. I'm not taking anything from granted here, but given the fact that Novak and Andy (:smash:) both lost early here I'd be really surprised if he didn't take advantage of it :o

Fish wasn't out of the tournament. He played again vs. Federer but lost today. Like the commentator from bet365 ist was (Mon)fiiiish on court. :p He had his chances to come back in the second set. :(

Third round is exit for Roger. Soderling/Wawrinka will beat him and send him with Fedex to Switzerland.

Didn't watch the whole match (Murray-Ancic was more fun to watch) but from what I saw Fed played mostly S&V like he did before 2003. Maybe he is trying to mix thing up or it was his strategical decision concerning Gael's game ? I guess we will find out in next rounds. 7 /7 saved BPs and 2/2 realized is a good sign for him, but I doubt he will escape with that against stronger opponent.

I'v just seen the match, and throughout Fed was charging the net Sampras-like, he even aproached without a good situation. I think he tries to shorten the points so to win matches with minimum toil on his body. And also maybe by more aplying S&V to gain additional edge over rivals, who mostly play baseline

I definitely think that coming in to the net is a good idea against Monfils whose passing shots tend to sit up and whose backhand is really mugly. Also Monfils has no clue how to deal with low slices.

This match isn't really telling in any way I think. Roger usually does well against 'lesser opponents'. But in any a case I don't really mind some of the not-so'lesser opponents' being cast out of the tournament either, eh?

the draw could not be any easier for Fed. he gets a clown by the name of Soderling next. after he runs through him like knife through water, he will get Acacuso who is also a hapless clown.

he will get Roddick in the quaters who is probably wondering even now how he can escape playing Fed. he will then get Youzhny or Davydenko in the semis who are buffoons compared with Fed and often shit in their pants when they see Fed.

might as well just give him the damn trophy so he can go home.

I'm watching the match right now, and so far I can't say that I'm impressed by Federer. He's still looking slow and a bit flat. His slices are way too short, especially on the service returns. His serve and volley game is fine, but honestly, I fear that his groundgame is gonna suffer if he starts to rely too much on finishing at the net.

7 BPs faced against out-of-form Monfils although saved, is not a good sign for Fed at all. I doubt he deliberately put himself in that situation.

Federer coming to the net 40 times in two sets. Was this a strategy for Monfils or something Fed might do more of in the future. I liked that he was more aggressive on serve returns. He still hit that short backhand slice of the second serve but miixed it up by backing up and hitting backhand topspin deep. Also chipped and charged a few times.

Q. You looked a lot more aggressive tonight than recently. Did you feel that way?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I tried to play an aggressive way, you know. I couldn't really chip and charge what I was trying to do because I think he's really improved his second serve. But other than that, he gives you always a chance from the baseline if you play aggressive enough to come in.
I'm really volleying well in the last few weeks, so I think that again showed today. And as I was winning points, I kept doing it.

Q. Apart from at Wimbledon, I've never seen you in the fore court quite so often. What was your plan in coming to the net quite so frequently?
ROGER FEDERER: I just answered, but it was just a tactic of me trying to come in. He plays in a way just sort of push your tennis; he waits for an error. You've got to take a little bit of a chance to come in, because the court is very slow here. So if you don't come in on a good ball, he'll always get a decent passing shot.
So if you can keep coming in and winning points on that, he'll start to change his game from the baseline, which he had to do to make more errors, and that's exactly what I wanted to force out of him.

---

This might be a tactic for this match only, we'll see.

OK. Remember Sampras remark of this being an era of clowns. The Nadal side of the circus is also full of clowns. From now on, there is nothing left but tennis on water. This is the glorious future . . . . .
