Typical stuff from Melzer, falling away at the most inopportune moment. I think he had break points on Tsonga's serve midway through the second too. It's probably surprising that it was this close to begin with. So...expected win for Tsonga.

I expected Melzer to win before the match given his variations. Interesting opposition of style and the austrian won most of his cats and mouse combi like the dropshot/volley one.

Tsonga did lack finesse but was solid enough to make it through. Kinda similar player next with Benneteau.

Much harder than expected and considering that Tsonga always plays his game in a similar pattern all the time this means that he is far from his best shape. He will need a lots of luck to make something spectacular in Miami.

Typically unreal how Melzer let him off the hook midway the 2nd set :timebomb:

Melzer was winning so many points with the short dropshots to Tsonga's backhand. I really liked his change of tactics midway in the first set when he was starting to get inconsistent off the forehand. Basically Melzer just fell apart come the latter stages of the second set and that continued into the third set.

Tsonga definitely picked up his play in the third though.
