The reason Federer chose to lose was because he knew that he had gained points at this tournie whereas Nadal lost points. Feeling secure about his number 1 position I guess he felt it was ok to tank the match.

Also, he realises he needs to conserve energy for the up and coming tournaments as he has only recently recovered from his shocking illness.

I think he made a mistake to play the match in such condition, he should have retired or not show up, this was realy ridiculous and he was even booed by a good part of the crowd while leaving, which was kind of cruel but he made a mistake to play at all

I think he made a mistake to play the match in such condition, he should have retired or not show up, this was realy ridiculous and he was even booed by a good part of the crowd while leaving, which was kind of cruel but he made a mistake to play at all

If it's this mono stuff again, Federer could be over for this year! And who knows how he will come back

Probably booed because he didn't sign autographs. Lots of people look to see who signs after they lose. Fed didn't.

Anyway, didn't he say before the tournament that he was fine? And if he has mono, how come he plays exhos? Peculiar behavior if you ask me. If he has mono, he should take off time and get well, but maybe if he does have mono and keeps playing, he has only himself to blame.

Federer was pretty terrible, unbelievable that he barely got into any of Fish's service games given Fish's poor service percentage.

Fish played very aggressively and did a good job of not letting Federer get into the match, by the end he was so relaxed he was swinging away because he was winning so comfortably.

Money quote from Federer press conference: "Guy took all his chances, and it was over in a heartbeat."

Lots of praise for Fish - took all the balls on the rise, made his shots. Federer was clearly disappointed, but not shocked: he said everyone knew Fish wasn't a 98 rank player. He said he didn't think Fish served that great, but he was disappointed that he couldn't get onto his second serve. There wasn't any illness issue. Some flashes of rueful humor. Seemed to be putting across the idea that the other guy had come out swinging, kept swinging, and that was all there was to it.

Credits to Fish who played well and took good advantage of his chances there. He deserved the win.
But i also think it's very obvious he was the healthier player of the two . Obviously Fed. has severe problems. His movements even between games was far from normal , not to mention his passive shots and weak hits of the ball. He looked totally lethargic.
My humble guess is that he's not feeling ok in the first place but he chose to play the match anyway. I don't know if anyone has got his presser, but i guess there remain lots of questions to be answered about his condition.

Roger:hug:

P.S. I am a Fedal fan by the way..so it wasn't the happiest tennis day for me, but the idea of Rafa and Fed losing head to head with the same score is though being freaky..but somehow i find it hilariously soothing ( don't know if i am the only one feeling that way).

I don't think that this is funny. It is strange to see Federer losing that way to #98(???)
When Fish hit first serve in,
Roger desires to make an error asap
When Fish hit second serve,
Roger seems like thinking "why not please hit your first serve in"
and hit a moonball PRECISELY IN FRONT OF FISH's FACE
to make it easier for Fish to attack.
After lost a point, he walk a little faster than usual
to serve to not waste a single minute in this match.
Then challenge the ball which he's not gonna win
while did't give a glance when it's a close deal.
And, he smile to us and wave.
I'm not taking anything from Fish.
I was so sad when he def Nalby
but feel it's a logical deal afterward.
Fish played good and can have a chance today even if
Federer plays average level.
And I don't feel Fed's physical condition or movement is that bad.
Maybe a bit exaggerating
But it looks like sort of aberration for me.
It's strange.
No offense. Just my feeling.

More quotes.

Q. The way things are going this year so far, do you just feel that you're short on match play?

ROGER FEDERER: Umm, not particularly, you know. I did play very well against all these guys this week. Today, you know, obviously it's a tough result, you know, but what can you do? It happens sometimes, you know.

So just better make it not happen so frequently, you know. But can only give credit to Mardy. I couldn't do much today, and these matches sometimes come around. I'm surprised myself it hasn't happened more in the last five years, you know. You always think one guy can outright dominate you on any given day.

People weren't able to do it against me, so that speaks for myself. But today Mardy was really impossible to beat, it almost looked like. He was never in doubt. Everything he took on the rise and hit winners, so it was just a great performance on his side.

****

Q. When you do have a loss, do you still find you can learn things from them and advance your game in a way even from the losses?

ROGER FEDERER: Usually can, but not much about today. Went too quick, and couldn't feel anything was there to be done very differently.

Could have served better, sure. Could have returned better, sure. But the guy was on top of his game. Took his chances and it was over in a heartbeat, so...

I assume you mean serve? Fish served at 34% today. Guess you missed all those massive FH, BH and return winners he hit today  Fed was way off his game, no doubt about that but to suggest Mardy was just a serve today is absolutely laughable.

Didn't say it was serve... You know what happens when you ASSume. I did see that Fish was just 34% serve(which illustrates just how BAD Fed was today). Basically I'm not a fan of any player who knows how to just bash balls from the baseline - credit to Fish for doing that very well, just not my favorite style. I'm not a huge Federer fan but I do appreciate his game which has(had) ALL the shots.

I guess you missed him at the net. :p

Fish is not known to be a baseline basher.

But, you know, whatever.

Roger:hug:

P.S. I am a Fedal fan by the way..so it wasn't the happiest tennis day for me, but the idea of Rafa and Fed losing head to head with the same score is though being freaky..but somehow i find it hilariously soothing ( don't know if i am the only one feeling that way).
i imagine them both talking to each other now about it. And i'm sure i am not the only one here thinking about it.

Federer and Nadal are doing more than talking to each other now about it :D

Has Federer been reading MTF?

So, am I to understand that Federer can't beat Fish when Fish plays at the top of his game?

When Fish hit second serve,
Roger seems like thinking "why not please hit your first serve in"
and HIT A MOONBALL PRECISELY IN FRONT OF FISH
to MAKE IT EASIER for Fish to attack.

I noticed the same thing, actually. It was odd.

Fish didn't even play well. Fed just pussied out in this one as evidenced by his pathetic body language.

I think Fish is the biggest shit-head on the planet but you either didn't watch the match or have some sort of Roger fetish going on.

Well, now seriously, Fish has actually played very well during this week, give the guy some credit

Kidding aside, Fish has played well this tournament. He played this tournament the way I thought he was going to be able to play when I first saw him against Andy in Cincy. He's seemed physically fit (skinny calves notwithstanding) and he's played his kind of game. He's also been determined.

I can't believe he had 6 hours more on the court and played 2 1/2 times the number of games that Federer played. It's a very good win for him, and he should be proud that he played his game and didn't let the fact that he was playing Federer and playing to get into the final get into his head.

He should be very proud of himself.

Congrats to Fish, he played really well(except the first serve:rolleyes:)

As for Federer, I dont even think he can win anything anymore, even Halle and Wimbledon,
at least Nadal did win against some players who had beaten him before, and losing to Djokovic isnt really that embarrassing.
But Federer just lost to someone who he always owned in the past, and losing with the scores like 63 62. Its just :haha:.
Wite a cakedraw like this, he still cannot win this tournament, seriously, he has no chance to win anything this year.:wavey:
