It's not easy to overpower anyone on such a slow court, but Djokovic did just that to Nadal and he did it easily.

Once the first forehand was neutralized he controlled the point and put Nadal on the defensive end of business right away.

nadal couldnt return djoker's serve, and was desperate to be aggressive but he just couldnt hit his spots today. Djokovic is one of those guys who puts so much pressure on nadal to be aggressive. Joker's bh held up beautifully and when he found his inside-out fh, the match was over. Well done JOKE!

atptennis.com listed Nadal's points as 5980 minus 275 for making it to the semis so his pts now is 5705. Assuming that Roger makes the final he will get 330 pts so his total pts will be 6710 I believe. I'm not sure how the system works. Anyways good for Roger.

Ironic. In a match when he plays his best hardcourt tennis for months, he loses the match. Rafa tries to go for winners, hits some other than crosscourt forehands to opponent's backhand. That is Rafa I'd like to see, not that ball returning machine he becomes most of the time

Take it easy, he just outplayed NADAL, too bad for RAFA, good for Djokovic, he's obviously "the man to beat" on hardcourt at this moment and RAFA can look back on a dogy yet fair run in defense of his title.

Final should be good ...

My worst nightmare ...

Not a terribly exciting match - could count the number of times either player came to net on one hand.

As expected, and as I said Nole's BH was the key. His FH in 1st set was disastrous but BH solid and consistent. Rafa tried everything: he started aggressively but he was making too much UE's, then he went to defense but Nole took over and forced errors from him . Rafa simply had no answer for Djoker's game today. However, there was a lots of beautiful points from both of them.

Some interesting comments from Eurosport..

"The second semi-final is between Roger Federer and Mardy Fish, so the players here are looking to earn the right to face Federer. Oh come on you know that is as close to a fact as possible."

"3-2 - A hold for Djokovic to 30 and that was the best game of the match so far as the crowd got to enjoy a couple of entertaining rallies. The highlight came on the point that put Djokovic 40-15 in front as he managed to win the point with a cross court winner despite dropping the racket earlier in the rally."

Painful loss for Rafa fans... Not so much the loss itself, but the WAY he lost. Again, after losing a few critical points, Rafa got blown out. Again: look at his losses recently:

1. Two Nalbandian blowouts
2. One Roger Federer blowout
3. One Tsonga blowout
4. One Misha blowout
5. One Djokovic blowout

Credit to Djokovic...solid, WORKMANLIKE performance. Rafa...nowhere near as aggressive as was against Blake. And he paid for it DEARLY.

Strange first set. Both players came out nervous, and Rafa took the early lead with a break. Rather than put the heat on, he played a Blakian game and gave the break back...by hitting four consecutive unforced errors. The set continues...and Rafa loses his serve after having a 40-15 lead...by double faulting to 40-30...than two loose points. Djokovic getting the break...on A LET CORD WINNER. Djokovic serves out the set.

Second set...Rafa has an opportunity to go up 3-1...and blows a backhand in a neutral rally. Then proceeds to get broken. To add insult to injury, he gets broken AGAIN after fighting back from 15-40 down...by throwing in a Djokovic-desperation dropshot.

Yes, the point total show Djokovic blowing out Rafa...but, more importantly, Rafa HAD his chances...but BLEW them...ALL the big points were BLOWN by RAFA...shanks, mental lapses, etc.

What angers me the most? WHERE WAS THE VAMOS? Yes, you are down 4-2...but you were down 5-2 to Tsonga...and came back.

Did the foot injury have something to do with it? NO...he was on the court, and moving well. But it seems to me that when Rafa does not BELIEVE he can win...the fire is missing...the salsa if you will.

What also infuriates me? Justin Gimelstob (a.k.a Offical Apologist for Boorish Roddick Behavior) almost seemingly CHEERING for Djokovic throughout the match...saying that Djokovic is the "real" #2. Yes, he got blown out, but Rafa had a wonderful tourney, and played the toughest opponents to reach the finals. Credit to Djokovic: he gave Rafa his respect...and said that Rafa is the #2...
Is Djokovic better on hard courts? Yes. Is Rafa the best on clay? Yes. But what about indoor and grass? I guess those surfaces don't count:rolleyes: And Justin Gimel-dope fell into the American bias by playing down clay court tennis...as American commentators always do.

Give FULL CREDIT to Djokovic...but give respect to Rafa. Are there flaws to his game? HECK YES. But the man is still the world #2...and losing to the #3 does not mean that Djokovic is clearly #2.

Back in the day, let' not forget, Lendl was #1...Becker #2...and Edberg #3...When Edberg defeated Becker, no one came out and started yelling that Edberg was the real #2. The rankings tell the truth...based on 52 weeks...Gimel-dope should understand...but then again, when you were ranked as low as he was in his career...and simply made your name by flopping around at the net like a speared tuna...your credibility is lacking to say the least.

Congrats to all of Djokovic's fan...well deserved win.

Even though Rafa's match finished with the same scoreline as Fed's, Rafa at least lost gracefully, had several chances but didn't use them, and has nothing to be ashamed of. He had two great wins and that should make him proud.

Too good Djokovic :hatoff:

Rafa's backhand got owned big time. Djokovic showed just how much better his is. He fed Nadal's backhand with some nothing balls and got an even worse response. Then he stepped it up and Nadal couldn't cope. Simply outplayed in every department.

Anyway, not a bad week at all for Rafa and he got some good wins.

Of all their meetings on hard courts, i didn't think Djokovic was at his best levels today.Rafa has had real chances today to beat Djokovic. But obviously Djokovic was the more consistent player when it comes to his serve as expected and most importantly took the right decisions when it really mattered. On the other hand,What was feared the most happened as Rafael lost his serve rapidly and then started making loads of unforced errors and took some effective wrong decisions on big points (not to mention that match point :o). Djokovic gained more confidence and control of the whole game punishing Nadal's lost backhand shots.

All in all..I hope Rafael won't get involved in another episode of frustrating feelings. Though losing some points there to the djoker but at least he has achieved some important winnings . Hopefully it'll boost his confidence and hope he keeps his level up

Just some thoughts; As a Fedal fan, The idea of Federer losing to Fish with the same score as Rafa lost to Djokovic is freaky, sad but hilariously soothing  :cuckoo:

Though i didn't think it really affected Rafa, but for the record ,the Ulrich's attitude and replies were jerky. The man is a disaster.

Rafa should be thinking about consulting Riog for some more time especially during the hard courts tourneys.

Rafa seems to have good respect for Nole's play as he should. Here are some comments from his preser.

Q. It seems like Djokovic now as opposed to last year - I think you played him seven times in the last year - it's hard to hit through him to find places to exploit him.

RAFAEL NADAL: He's a very complete player, no? Very good serve, very good backhand, very good forehand. He's moving fast and moving well. He has very good position on court.

He has the position - feel the position inside the court very easy, and that's very difficult when you're playing with these fast balls. He can do it, so that's exceptional quality.

So, well, the only way for beat him is the way when I play against him in Shanghai: Very aggressive. All the time playing the ball with -- touching the ball with big powerful backhand, forehand, and try to play very good.

Justin and Barry (a.k.a. Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dumber) were trying to imply that there were bad feeling between Rafa and Nole. Outside of when I think Rafa was a little embarrased by some if the imitations, it doesn't seem like that there has been any conflict between these two guys. Rafa has never said anything negative to my knowledge about Nole and Nole has said something along the lines of Rafa is a nice guy.

I am disappointed that Rafa did not pull out the win, but not surprised. Nole is just the better hard court player right now and Rafa needs to have an exceptional day to beat him on the surface, which he did not.

Still- Justin's awful commentary, where he forgot about grass and downplayed clay as a surface- was pretty darned unprofessional. Yes, Nole is better on hard- but don't get ready to say that Rafa is done.

I know...ugh. Where does he get this idea about grass? Nole has not shown that yet. Justin has been an awful commentator throughout the tournament. Very, very unprofessional.

Nole is a fantastic hard court player (and better on outdoor hard than Rafa) and is strong on all surfaces....but wait until he makes it further in a grass tournament than Rafa and/or beats him on the surface before you say that Nadal is weaker on grass than Novak Justin.

Gimelstob was awful beyond belief. I wouldn't be surprised to find him wearing the letter "N" on his shirt...while sitting with the Djokovic family (sorry, but the younger Djokovic brother who refused to cheer for Novak will be replaced).

Justin Gimelsob is from New Jersey...so I guess I shouldn't expect much. My brother-in-law played in the same junior tourney, and said the guy and his family were aristocratic snobs...why do you think he wrote that wonderful "piece" of journalism defending Roddick's boorish behavior?

I sent you a PM btw.

Back to the match- one thing that I think about Nole is that it is probably going to be easier to knock him off in the smaller tournaments than the bigger ones. He just doesn't want to lose in the big ones- at least the big outdoor ones. I am curious as to how he will do in the indoor swing this year if he continues to build. I think that he may be less likely to fade in the big tournaments at the end of the year. Of course, it is too early to say that...and like Rafa- he may have a cyclical pattern.

anyway what was this thread about again? Rafa losing to McNoleo

Nadal, Federer = decline.

all those years at the top together in the finals every week, catches up somewhere... least Rafa still has Roland Garros in his pocket for a while longer.

Thats Nadal in the middle !!!

Does that mean Roger and Nole are on the left and right?

This loss has fried my brain...I would take some anti-depressants, but Tom Cruise says that they're bad for you.

Yes, imagine this, at least 3 years Fed and Rafa were actors of the finals. Soon, they will be sometimes actors in the semis only.

Why has this loss fried your brain? It doesn't mean much in terms of clay, only that Nadal may have lost some confidence overall and especially on HC. The Federer loss is far worse, as there are really only two explanations: 1.) decline or 2.) a tank (because he doesn't want to play Djokovic). Neither is good.

Rafa will bounce back on clay. I think Novak will give him a harder time than Federer has on clay (either this year or next, I don't know), but I think he'll still be overwhelmingly dominant. I'd like to see Nole win RG, but I realize the chances of that are 10% or less.

ok ok lets not let the greed fry your brains Dr. Aloimeh. Nobody wins the Ragfael Nadal Invitational at Roland Garros but the Clay Monster himself. last i checked, he owned all the red clay on the planet anyway.

the Serbian Slayer will win the U.S. Open this year and then come back and win 75% of the slams in 2009. the next #1 is the Serbian Slayer. that much is clear.

no need for greed.

I believe Novak's game is more promising to give Rafa problems on clay, than Roger's. Again, Rafa is king of clay, and I don't see Djokovic taking anything from him, but let's see. So far Novak didn't take single set of Nadal on clay, but things will change. Novak is smart, and when you are smart, you see possibilities. Last year Novak was just threatening player, this year he is one of the favorites.

I am greedy, aren't I? But I do think Novak has more potential on clay and especially at RG than Roger. Whether he has enough to take down Nadal is doubtful, but I think he has enough confidence and game to get to the semis again, if not the final at RG.

i can see Djokovic causing some more problems for Nadal but only in best of 3 sets foremats. this means that Nadal is vulnerable now in a tournament like Monte Carlo or even barcelona. i guess you can add Hamburg to that list.

i think he will give all he has to win in Rome and at Roland Garros. Roland Garros is a much more difficult proposition for anyone.

Nadal is 34-0 on clay in the best of 5 sets foremats. now with having no success anywhere else, his resolve will be even greater at Roland Garros.

last year, at least he won here in Indian Wells but now he will pull up in Monte Carlo with no titles in 10 months.

its going to be rough going early on clay for him but once he gets his bearings right, he will be where he needs to be to get the Roland Garros title. Djokovic and Fed will have a monopoly on the rest of the slams from here on out. all Nadal will have is Roland Garros. he will die before he gives up his turf there.

My brain is fried because, as a Rafa fan, I want him to reach #1...even for a week. And win Wimbledon...that is all. If he were #1, I could care less...

Again, I think Djokovic's game is not suited for a long RG run if he meets REAL clay courters. His endurance just isn't at that the level.

And think about this: what Rafa on clay may be one of the most amazing achievements in the history of the sport: 81 matches in a row. To do so, his endurance had to be at the highest level of anyone...

Djokovic, even in warm weather with long points, does not have the necessary fitness to really challenge on the surface. Grass is another story: he has the serve, and the points are shorter.

Each player has his or her weakness. Rafa's is hard courts. Roger's is clay. Lendl's was grass. And Novak's is, and will be, clay.

But at Wimbledon, you have to remember: Rafa's spin is what makes it so dangerous for his opponent. And, this goes for both Rafa and Novak: grass court tennis is SO unpredictable. All it takes is a hot serving day, and they are gone.

That is why, honestly, I believe Sampras-if he trained for it-could defeat both Rafa and Novak on grass at Wimbledon THIS YEAR.

How much of Rafa's success is due to his confidence/mental strength on clay and how much to his physical abilities (of which I have no doubt)? If Djokovic could defeat Rafa in 2/3 or even 1/3 of the clay MS, he could put a serious dent in Rafa's confidence going into RG. I'm not saying it will happen, but it could.

Good win for Djokovic, he put away the poor performance in the QFs and stepped it up when he needed to do so.

As for the fanbase, well there are some very good ones, the gloaters are having their moment and when Nole plays poorly and stops winning, they will disappear.

Like it or not, Djokovic said where he wanted to be in relation to tennis and unlike so many others, he has backed up the words so far.

Time for him to reel the Fish in.

Maybe you should stop dreaming, and start looking at the world more realisticaly?

Btw, I really doubt Nole can hurt Rafa on clay. Maybe he can give him tougher challenge then Fed (and that is big question too!) but to beat him in RG? I really think chances for that are very, very small.
Remember Rome last year? Nole was playing really good against Rafa there, and he lost 6-3, 6-2. I think that as much as Nole is dominant over Rafa on HC, Nadal is even more dominant over Nole on clay.

p.s. I would like if I am wrong, but IMO thats how it is at the moment.

I wouldn't write Fish off too quickly...they played once and Novak won but it was a tight match. Also they played recently in Hopman Cup and that match was tight too. So it's not gonna be that easy.

Nole didn't even play that well.

That's what I thought.

Match was very anticlimactic. Nole's performance ranged from "shite" to "OK-ish", improving steadily as the match went along. FH was completely off during the 1st.

With the exception of one of his service games in the 2nd set, Nadal played shite throughout. His BH "slice" is a riot, and I actually LOLed when Nole blasted away some of his moonballs.

it will be a huge upset obviously if he wins. he may have some chances if he can serve at 70% or better. amazing things happen if you can just take care of your serve fast on hard courts.

one of them is that you dont give the other player much of a chance at getting any rhythm. and secondly, it puts his serve under more pressure. you Roddick win in straight sets over him in Dubai.

Roddick held his serve 54 times straight there and got himself a title.

Nole = Piggy Roaster Killa

typical Nadal HC tournament - scrapes past early rounds on luck and is then demolished by Semi finals time

CYA Rafito, enjoy the boat to Miami son :wavey: bye bye 275 points as well :wavey:

now for Nole to be schooled in tomorrow's final

It took a lot more than luck to scrape by Tsonga and Blake:rolleyes: Love it if he could pace himself more effectively, but he has to play out of his mind just to get through the early rounds, then his mind goes on walkabout when it most matters.

I really doubt that Novak can beat Nadal on clay at this time, if ever.

Grass is another story. He was injured last year in the semis and managed, with his serve alone, to take the first set. Nadal is somewhat of an anomaly on grass, but I think Novak could take him out on pretty much every surface but clay. We will see.
