NBC is available throughout Europe and you can also watch shows on the Jay Leno website after transmission.

So plenty of chances for all to appreciate...but please no more impressions.

They are starting to, esp because he reached the final of the US Open. Even American non-tennis fans notice that kind of stuff....

Surprising that he picked Djokovic.. Whats Djokovic's status in the states? Im sure more people know Federer, Nadal and mainly american players..

It would probably be on CNBC Europe two days (i think) after the original, at midnight, if it's a work day; and Saturdays and Sundays at 9:00pm shows the best or the most interesting shows of the week.
I like Jay Leno and that's how i watch it.

virtually non-existent.

I think he'll do well in America over the years. He loves to joke around, he loves attention, he has opinions on everything, isn't scarred to stand up to others...Americans are gonna love him. Especially if he wins USO. Even though Federer has 12 grand slams and countless other titles, I get the feeling that Americans are indifferent when it comes to him. They know he's a great tennis player, but he's not exactly Agassi or even Roddick when it comes to popularity in the States.

Yes, and that's stupid. Not blaming them because I would use feet to estimate height also as it's what I know but why some places are still not using the metric system makes the same sense as choosing to recieve in a one point match against Ivo Karlovic.

Great point stebs, the key issue is how easy is to convert units within the metric system. You can instantly reply to the question "how many centimetres are there in one kilometre" while probably you need a calculator to reply on "how many inches are there in a mile"

Branimir
03-12-2008, 08:06 PM
2 out 20 Americans would give you correct answer of how many inches are in 1 mile. You can give them/us calculator and converting constants. It still wouldn't be enough. If I was born American I would have that trouble too. :)

I didn't watch it, but it sounds like it went OK. No doubt, every single detail will be torn to shreds by the hypocritical haters, who, like the harpies are just angling to eviscerate the guy for each and every word and facial expression.

Jay asked if they were friends and he was like "yes" and then I don't remember what else he said then but it lead Jay to ask if they were more than friends, to which Novak then kinda stumbled around and said they were friends. I don't know it was kinda strange.

Can you just imagine some other tennis player on that show or any other show with similar topic. It takes guts to be there. I mean I was nervous about Novak, just can't imagine how he felt. He was clearly very nervous. Was sweating and wasn't really natural but got more comfortable toward the end. :)

Can you just imagine some other tennis player on that show or any other show with similar topic. It takes guts to be there. I mean I was nervous about Novak, just can't imagine how he felt. He was clearly very nervous. Was sweating and wasn't really natural but got more comfortable toward the end. :)

I am not sure about additional ovation. Can you imagined if he didn't get it? xD But yeah, the way he asked you could see that he is very nervous.

djokovic will popularize the sport.

that shows he is smart as well. he quickly found a way to diffuse his nervousness.

Leno could have been a little smarter and not pushed him as much. i mean, he could have let the guy relax a little.
Do you remember if Nadal was ever on Leno or Letterman? I was just wondering.

Remember, off the court Nadal is rather shy. His personality is very different from Nole who is more outgoing..

Remember also Nadal has the language barrier. I don't think that he'd be comfortable on American talk shows. Although I'd love to see him :)

:) I saw it... I wasn't sure how confidently he would walk out. He seemed almost embarrassed at first when he came out, he glanced at the audience, nodded and then seemed to look downward as he approached Jay. He just appeared more self-conscious than he usually does. He isn't used to being introduced to an audience who isn't there for tennis (and probably knows very little about it). He then asked the audience to clap for him again because he was "nervous". His forehead was glistening with sweat, so I don't think he was just saying this to be cute. But he worked his way into the interview and answered the typical questions. I was waiting for a big plug for the Indian Wells tournament, but it didn't really happen, but that's alright. It was nice to see!

Well he kind of did already, just that not many people want to admit that. Just by being true contender against Nadal and Federer he made tennis interesting once again.

In the interview before the final with Mats Wilander, Mats said that to him Novak Djokovic is the smartest player on the tour, and that he is glad that someone who is normal is again really good in tennis. :)

We Americans aren't offput by nervousness/insecurity. On the contrary, it is something we like: vulnerability is a sign of humanity. Actually, I think much of Djokovic's brazenness and swagger on the court and in the post-match interviews is a defense mechanism. He seems to be a thoroughly emotional person, as this video of him discussing Kosovo and the Serb/Croat gaffe in Montreal shows:

tI2w5-GzfPA

On the other hand, a certain other unnamed tennis player is so reserved with his emotions that the only time we see any emotion is when it's unappealing - after a loss. I would probably like this player a lot more if he was more positively emotional with the audience.

i think its high time you change your sig. this guy is just bursting with personality. we may have been wrong about him.

i know i hated the bastard myself when he kept mocking the Clay Monster but over time, i have to come to realize that he is just what the sport needed.

he really has no choice but to present himself in a very positive and authoritative light on the court. wimps just dont get to beat somebody as great as Fed.

I didn't know this. The only thing I heard about Novak from Mats was the justified criticism of his immodesty and his family's behavior at the AO final, both of which were reprehensible. On the other hand, Mats may just "say it as he sees it," in which case his lauding of Novak's intelligence is given dispassionately and objectively, just like his critical comments on Novak's (and his family's) unacceptable attitudes and behaviors.

I agree with you 100%. He is very intelligent, which is probably the *main* reason why he has so exponentially improved in certain aspects of his game that weren't his natural strengths (e.g. serve and net game, which not seem to be as intrinsic as the ground strokes and movement). He also demonstrates wit, humor, acute skills of observation of others and the ability to *objectivize* (i.e. the dead-on impersonations give it away), and social awareness. He and his family have been lacking in tact and humility (or at least feigned humility, a la Roger) and he will need to correct these things in order to become a less polarizing character for the audience and for his fellow players.

excellent post. i think his mom is just a little bit too unrestrained in her emotions over her son who has become a world beater. over time, she will learn to be more restrained.

one thing they are saying about him is that he is not afraid to consult others about getting better. for instance, he has called both johhny mac and sampras about developing a more dominating serve and being better at the net. he is about to re-hire mark woodforde in order to improve his net game.

woodforde lives just a few blocks away from the indian wells tournament site so they may already be working together.

you just gotta admire that in a pro. Fed is the same way. as good as he has been, he is still willing to outwork everybody out there. its just hard to stem the tide of the youth movement but the guy is willing work.

bottom line is that tennis needs this guy. now if we could only get Nadal to right the ship, all will be just dandy.

...in order to become a less polarizing character for the audience and for his fellow players.

I'm not really sure he's looking for becoming unpolarizing character. Somehow it seems to me that underlying (shreds of) conflict make him tick, make him strive. So far we have rather convicing evidences that ExFed's disdainful notes on his game actually turn into a motor which pushes Novak further ahead. Also, have you noticed how he soaked audience's unsportly rooting in Tsonga match to turn it into fruitful anger and produce excellent points when they were most needed? It seems he'll always be in (stronger or weaker) need for emotional exchange with his surrounding (being very emotional himself), no matter if it's joy or anger, and therefore I really can't see him becoming anything resembling complacent Björn-Borgish type.

Nice posts, guys...and we knew it all. Novak has not done or said anything we had not already seen or hear before...I agree with the statement that his intelligence as passion are the main engines of his performance, which help him to improve his physical skills. I'm not agree with Aloimeh that "He and his family have been lacking in tact and humility".
I don't see him performing the same attitude as his father was. What he should have done? To spit at his family in front of cameras? He owes them a lot, not only for money they spent on his development, but also for great moral supporting he always gets. But, I'm sure he said a lot to his father face to face, because things seemed a little bit different when they came in Belgrade. I'm pretty sure we all had similar situations in our lives.;) I think he actually act honorable towards his parents, although we don't like his father at all. Me personally, don't find his mother unlikable. She's just too exited mom, what is understandable. And those "bad" comments coming from the individuals in public on court makes him anger which produces some really good shots. Who knows how would you act? Don't judge so harsh. See, Aloimeh, lot of nasty comments according to your background really pissed you off on this forum, wouldn't be similar on the court? And, HAHAHA, "ponding the person". Aloimeh is really great guy and I find his sig (as before as now) as the proof of his may be even too big love for Novak.;)

I thought Novak did great for his first time on a popular late night US show. I loved how he bowed to Bill Cosby. LOL.

This is really a huge deal, to have a foreign tennis player who hasn't won the US Open to appear on one of the most popular late night talk shows. Novak's got a good agent! Leno said Novak was only their second Serbian guest.

Personally, I'm thrilled that we've had three tennis players appearing on high profile talk shows this week in the US (Blake, Novak, and Monica Seles on the Ellen show). It must be a new record for the sport. And just coming off the Fed-Sampras exo, tennis has had some great exposure this week. :worship:

Jay Leno's monologue sucked, no surprise there. It got less applause than Nole's entrance! I think Novak presented himself pretty well. I'm glad he got good applause after the interview was over. The part where Jay said he beat Fed twice and Nole went "Shh" was cute. And I loved the suit!

I guess the haters didn't watch the interview, otherwise they'd be making remarks such as:

well in the presence of Cosby and Leno and millions watching around the world, he was a little nervous. that was to be expected.

i thought he was thinking fast when he asked the audience for another applause. he told them he was a little nervous and that he needed another applause. that was ingenious.

we have to remember that he is only 20 and suddenly a household name everywhere.
