Why didn't Nadal withdraw prior to the draw? They already said to the press several days ago that he's not playing.

Second quarter of the draw looks pretty open, but quite a few good grassers in there.

I know he's not, but he can't have officially withdrawn, or he'd not be in the draw.

That's the third big tournament in a row that Hewitt and Melzer will be playing each other, first Hamburg, then Roland Garros, now Wimbledon

I know he's not, but he can't have officially withdrawn, or he'd not be in the draw.

Looks like the Nadal camp might be operating on Mallorquin time and have forgot to withdraw officially within time, if this is the case.

what a crap draw for the Germans:
Kiefer again right in the 1st round against one of the best grass court players overall :banghead: :banghead:
Schüttler also not easy against Soderling and Rusedski is already looming there
Haas has a potential 2nd round meeting with either Novak or Malisee

OMG :( :banghead:

Dutch guys:

Schalken: tough 2nd round vs Todd Martin, 1st and 3rd round should be okay. 4th round vs Schuttler who he owns in matchups. QF: Roddick, which will be the end. But i'd be glad with a QF result here.

Sluiter: Tough 1st round vs bjorkman. 3rd round also hard, with Clement/Fish. If Sluiter plays at the top of his grasscourtgame, he has the potential to beat the possible 4th round and QF round opponents...

Verkerk: Davydenko in 1st round. Doable on grass, but Verkerk isn't a grass specialist either. Philippoussis in 2nd round: too hard.

van Louem: Andreev in 1st round. Even if John doesn't have his back problems, Andreev might be too hard to beat.

Other favs of mine:

Federer: Easy first rounds, Henman and Roddick in the other half. Good draw, only problem is Hewitt in QF.

Henman: SF: Roddick. Final: Federer. Hope that's going to happen. Round 1,2,3 should be cake for Tim.

Weird 1st round matches:
Srichaphan - Karlovic --> bad draw for both
Hewitt - Melzer --> are they glued together??
Nalbandian - Ancic --> very tough for David

Bastard.....tough draw for Lleyton

even though he's taken Melzer out twice, Melzers already beaten the likes of Henman and Safin this year, if he can win a few, Safin wont be an easy task, blisters or not, and if not Safin, Moya has a pretty good record against Lleyton. And then Federer....jeez

Phlips isnt as tough but by no means easy....Nalbandian and Henman looking to be the main problem

How bloody happy will Roddick be with his draw? I dont think he couldve wished for an easier draw.....

It's very quiet round here, considering the main draw for a Grand Slam tourney has been released not long ago. Is it so uncontroversial, or is it just that most of America hasn't woken up yet? ;)

I don't know about anyone else jtipson but the fact that there are two tourneys still going on plus final round quallies today is keeping my mind too busy to process how much this draw truly pisses me off.

Kiwi gets seeded for the first time in ages & he draws ToJo!! :fiery:

Dmitry vs. Marat?! The match of 2 headcases :banghead:

Jurgen vs. Lleyton :banghead:

Guille vs. Wesley

Arnaud vs. Joachim

Xavier vs. Jiri

David vs. Mario :fiery: :banghead: Could he get a worse first round right now??

Rainer vs. Robin :banghead:

How bloody happy will Roddick be with his draw? I dont think he couldve wished for an easier draw.....

 Morning jtipson I just woke up :)

I was surprised to not see a GM thread about this!

Anyway to what I quoted above.... Dent in the 3rd round on grass is not an easy draw. But aside from Henman in his half I'm relatively pleased:) Was about time he got a break in his opening match, he's had some really tough openers lately.

So Nadal is DEFINITELY not playing? And Blake will most likely withdraw after as well as his site says he's only going to the doctor today.

All in all I'd say it's a pretty interesting draw.

I wasn't going to comment on Roddick's draw only because we don't know who the qualifier will be. Just because there's a (Q) there doesn't give him an automatic BYE to the 2nd round ;) .

Well no offense to any of the guys in qualifying but they're not Henman or Gonzo, both of whom Andy has drawn in the first round of slams recently. So, I'll take it:)

Morning! Looks like rue has just made a GM thread anyway :)

Yes, I'm pretty sure Nadal isn't playing. There was an article on Marca earlier this week, quoting his uncle that they had decided to leave his comeback until the week after Wimbledon, one reason being he hadn't had enough match play. If he were in, that would make Andy's draw a whole lot tougher, but otherwise we have to wait and see who the qualifiers/lucky losers are.

I haven't been following the other tournaments too closely this week (none of my favs are playing), although I have to agree that Robin is a horrible draw for Rainer, considering their AO first round and the way Robin's playing on grass right now.

Rafael Nadal and Nicolas Escude have joined the list of big names to withdraw from Wimbledon.
Spanish 18-year-old Nadal, who has been recovering from a broken foot-bone, has been advised by his doctor not to play.

He had been pitted against American Jeff Salzenstein in Thursday's draw for the first round and could have faced second seed Andy Roddick in round two.

Frenchman Escude, who reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2001, has a shoulder problem.

Andre Agassi, the 1992 champion in SW19, current French Open champion Gaston Gaudio and Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten are among the names to have already pulled out of the tournament.

Nadal's place will go to a lucky loser from qualifying.

... and Starace plays Tommy Robredo, should be a good match. Probably not played 'til Tuesday.

My fav. Carlos Moya plays Olivier Patience (France) ... not that it will be shown on TV here in Oz. of course. They will show any Aussie match, so probably Hewitt & Arthurs on the first day ... and Federer.
On Tuesday they will probably show Philippoussis (have to, in case he gets beaten 1st round :) ) and Todd Reid ... possibly Taylor Dent, as his father is Aussie (??), and probably Roddick. But the best match on Tuesday could be Todd Martin v. Guillermo Canas ... esp. if it goes to 5 sets! :)

So I will just have to hope like crazy that Carlos gets past Safin or Goran & meets Hewitt, so I can see it on TV !!! They will have to show THAT match !! [and wouldn't it be funny if Carlos wins & goes on to meet Federer ... esp. with all the talk about a Federer/Hewitt Q-F]

Aaaahh, Moya beating Hewitt on grass ... my dream come true !! [Don't laugh, he beat Mark on grass at D.C. final ... you never know, he has Lleyton's number ... :) ]
