I think Frank deserves his own thread now. :)

I'll kick it off with a nice article about his off-season training here. (http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/tennis/story.html?id=4cab4312-6717-4512-a97a-004306504215&k=43422)

Here's hoping for a great 2008 for Frank.

Right well Frank is back from his injury break. He lost a heart-breaker in his first match back to Hernandez [6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)] but I'll take that as an encouraging sign that he gave him so much trouble on clay.

Congrats Frank! I'm a little late in posting this but:

Crowd favourite Frank Dancevic won the men’s singles title at The Surbiton Trophy on Sunday in an epic three set battle against Kevin Anderson.

Having lost the first set to the big serving South African, Dancevic fought back to record a 4-6 6-3 7-6(4) victory. The sell-out crowd enjoyed every minute of an enthralling contest which saw the 23 year-old Canadian finally overcome Anderson’s powerful game in a nail biting third set tie-break.
Dancevic, ranked No 111 in the world, has been a popular figure in Surbiton since his debut in 2004 when he defeated Greg Rusedski. After the final, the Niagara Falls native demonstrated why he is a much loved character at The Surbiton Trophy by staying on court for a further 30 minutes to hit with a group of young club players.
Dancevic follows in the footsteps of Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 2008 Australian Open runner-up, who was victorious on the Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club’s grass courts last year. The right-hander will be hoping to build on this success when he travels to Wimbledon in a fortnight for The Championships.

Fantastic result for Frank. Here was his draw:

Singles - First Round #111 (q)Frank Dancevic (CAN) d. #125 (7)Gilles Muller (LUX) 6-2 1-1 ret.
Singles - Second Round #111 (q)Frank Dancevic (CAN) d. #334 (WC)Alexander Slabinsky (GBR) 6-2 6-1
Singles - Quarterfinals #111 (q)Frank Dancevic (CAN) d. #166 Robert Smeets (AUS) 6-4 6-4
Singles - Semifinals #111 (q)Frank Dancevic (CAN) d. #131 (8)Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) 6-4 7-6(5)
Singles - Finals #111 (q)Frank Dancevic (CAN) d. #101 (5)Kevin Anderson (RSA) 4-6 6-3 7-6(4)

Let's hope he gets a decent Wimbledon draw and plays well.

Nalbandian and Dancevic are my 2 favourite players. I always support Frank apart from when he plays David (though in their match at Wimbledon last year I supported Frank in the 3rd set as I didn't want him to lose in straight sets). It will be a weird experience watching Frank play and not wanting him to win. Hopefully it will be a good match though.

TORONTO, July 16 /CNW/ -- Evian(R) Natural Spring Water, the world's leading premium spring water, today announced that Canada's top singles player, Frank Dancevic has signed an exclusive worldwide endorsement deal with Evian.

"We're thrilled to have Frank on board as a spokesperson for Evian," said Jeff Caswell, Vice President of Marketing for Evian North America. "Frank's natural abilities, accomplishments and dedication to the sport of tennis have distinguished him as one of Canada's top athletes. We look forward to our relationship with Frank and our continued commitment to the sport of tennis."

"I'm very proud to represent the Evian brand in Canada," said Dancevic. "Throughout my career, I've witnessed Evian's longstanding commitment to athletes and the sport of tennis. Evian's partnership with Dancevic will include branding on his tennis attire and towel as well as exclusive use of Evian products, all of which will further Evian's visibility during professional tennis tournaments. The deal also includes Evian tennis merchandise personally signed by Dancevic to be given away to fans and consumers.

And a few pictures from Newport.

For those interested here is a nice interview/article about Frank from the Toronto Star.

The glam life: Little cash, but lots of hope
CATHAL KELLY

There may be a glamorous life for tennis players, but Canada's best has yet to enjoy it.

Niagara Falls native Frank Dancevic, the world's 83rd-ranked singles player, is a working pro. He travels the world, tournament to tournament, looking to accrue ATP ranking points and stay financially afloat. In between, he worries about keeping healthy while still trying to improve his game. There are no baggage handlers and entourages along the way.

"Let me give you an example," Dancevic, 23, said last week from Indiana, where he had just been knocked out of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships. "We were supposed to fly in Saturday. But there was a storm that went through. We were on the runway for four hours. Eventually, our flight got cancelled. I was at the airport for 15 hours. I had to fly into Cincinnati, then drive over here. I got in late last night. I practised for an hour and then I had to play today."

That hour was the first he'd spent on a hard court in over a month after working Europe's grass-court circuit. The results were predictable.

Dancevic came out swinging, winning the first set 7-6 in a tiebreak against American Bobby Reynolds. But lack of practice came back to bite in the second and third. He went down 6-3 and 6-2.

Even among the elite, it can be a grind. Added to that pressure is the tag Dancevic wears as Canada's great tennis hope.

"He has the potential to beat almost anybody. He has a shot at being a top-20 player," said Debbie Kirkwood, Tennis Canada's director of high performance, who has watched Dancevic over his entire career. Considering no Canadian man has ever cracked the top 40, that would be a feat.

Dancevic was turned on to the game by his father, John, an immigrant whose own preference was soccer.

Geography played a big part in the choice. The Dancevics grew up only a stone's throw from a tennis club. John Dancevic wasn't terribly familiar with tennis, but he could see that his son was good.

As his game improved, Dancevic gave up other sports to focus entirely on the court. At 15, his American coach took him south to audition for the U.S. Tennis Association. After a practice match against a U.S. pro, Dancevic was asked to sign up for Uncle Sam. John Dancevic sought a transfer to Michigan from his employer, General Motors. But Frank refused.

"He said, `I'm Canadian. I'm staying here,'" John Dancevic recalled.

"It was in my best interests to go there," Frank said. "But I chose to stay here because I love Canada. I wanted to play Davis Cup for Canada."

At 17, in his first ATP tournament, he took out Russian standout Nikolay Davydenko.

"That was the moment when I thought, `It happened,'" John Dancevic said. The reedy kid from Niagara Falls had announced himself as a young man to be watched.

His biggest professional breakthrough came in Indianapolis last year. He reached the final, a first for a Canadian at an ATP event in nearly a decade. En route, he defeated former world No.1 Andy Roddick. He later made similar inroads at the Rogers Cup event held in Montreal, reaching the quarters. He stretched Rafael Nadal to three sets in that match.

"All of last year, he was dancing around multiple wins over top-20 players. They just didn't happen," Kirkwood said. "But it's there."

Canada's most decorated veteran, doubles specialist Daniel Nestor, has said that tennis won't break into the Canadian sports consciousness until one of our singles players goes into the late rounds of a Grand Slam event. Then he tapped Dancevic to do it.

But from the sound of it, Dancevic is treading water at the moment.

A back injury felled him hard to start the year. Dancevic's world ranking plummeted. He struggled to rediscover his form.

"You're never guaranteed to make a living at this," Dancevic said. "Even now, I'm ranked in the top 80 and I was injured for four months. I know what it feels like to be wondering what's going to happen in the future."

He split with his coach, former Canadian pro and current coach of Canada's Davis Cup team, Martin Laurendeau. He's been working for three months with French coach Boris Vallejo.

He began clawing his way back up tennis's hill. Despite a nagging wrist injury, he notched a huge straight-sets upset over former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian in the first round at the All-England Club.

Afterward, he called it "one of the best matches in my career – if not the best." In his next match, he lost to 106th-ranked Bobby Reynolds – the same Reynolds from Indiana.

That has been Dancevic's reputation thus far – as a giant killer. There are a few of those around the men's game.

"Strange things happen," Dancevic said. "There's not really much difference on a given day between a guy who's ranked 100 and a guy who's ranked 20. If the guy who's higher ranked is just a little off and the guy who's ranked 100 is having a good day, then there's an upset."

So what separates the players who can win on a given day and the ones who do it reliably?

"They keep their bodies healthy. They're able to sustain their level the whole year. That's what keeps them up there. Mentally, they're strong," Dancevic said.

"There are plenty of guys who should be top 20 – guys who are ranked in the 90s or below right now – but their bodies just can't keep up with it."

The silver lining of the Indianapolis loss is that Dancevic can return home early. He's back in Niagara Falls right now, commuting to Toronto to practice. After being granted a wild-card entry, Dancevic will be the most watched Canadian in the Rogers Cup. He said he arrives completely healthy for the first time in a long time.

But Dancevic drew a tough first-round matchup with No. 24-ranked Croatian Mario Ancic. If he goes through, he could face defending champion Novak Djokovic

"Playing at home is my favourite thing in the world," Dancevic said. "Last year in Montreal I had a great run in front of an unbelievable crowd. It's great to play in a tournament and feel completely at home."

That long climb into tennis's elite – the one so many in and around the Canadian game expect Dancevic to make – starts again tomorrow.

"I think that I'm coming into my prime," Dancevic said as he signed off. "It's time for things to start happening in my career."

Best of luck against Mario!! :wavey:

Tough draw for Frank, went down to Wawa in three sets. It was an awfully long way to go for one match, and he likely would have been better off staying in America to play a few hardcourt events but I hope the experience has made it worth it for him.

Next up, US Open!!

Another first round loss, unfortunately (that's 6 out of the 10 tournaments he's played this year). Tough draw again but this season has been nothing short of a disaster after the momentum he built up last summer. I realize injuries have been a major factor but disappointing nonetheless.

Anyone know what his plans are for the fall? I hope he enters qualifying for the masters series events and can win a few matches, get his ranking up a bit before 2009.

A bit of interesting news, Frank has decided to head back to the challenger circuit and will be playing in Tulsa this week, he's the 6th seed.

On the one hand I hope he gets his ranking up and gets some confidence back... on the other hand, this is a player with wins over Roddick, Nalbandian, and Ancic within the last year - clearly he has the talent to be a full-time tour player.

Good luck Frank. :)

Frank has a new coach. Maybe this will turn things around. :) Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico will start working with him in two weeks.

Lavalle, 41, won the Wimbledon juniors boys' title in 1985 and is probably one of the best players ever to come out of Mexico. He represented his country in Davis Cup for 15 years (3-1 against Canadians in two ties - beating Andrew Sznajder, Sébastien Lareau and Stéphane Bonneau, losing to Martin Wostenholme).

He reached a high of No. 51 in singles (in 1986) and No. 23 in doubles (in 1992) in about a dozen years on the ATP Tour. He reached the round of 16 at the 1989 Australian Open, and the third round of the French Open that same year. In doubles, he had two semi-finals at the French Open, and went semis-semis-finals at Wimbledon from 1989-91. He also was a quarter-finalist at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

Unless he has a chance to break into the top 100 before the end of the year there is no reason to play

Update on Frank Dancevic

By smyles62 12-31-2008 COMMENTS(0) Open Court

Canada's best male player, who struggled in 2008 after having a breakthrough into the top 70 in 2007, has prepared hard as he tries to get things back on track in 2009.

He was at the Saddlebrook resort in Tampa, Fla. for two weeks with new coach Leo Lavalle, a Mexican former top-50 player, spending 3-4 hours on the court and a couple more hours in the gym every day.

He left for Australia Sunday, and given his lowered ranking, will have to do a lot of qualifying if he wants to play in the top events – and that includes the Brisbane event next week, and the Australian Open qualies.

Dancevic also has changed racquets. He was playing with what looked like a Volkl; now, he has switched to a Wilson KBlade H22; we're told it's a custom model not available retail, and that Dancevic has upped his power level and aggressiveness with it.

(It's also supposedly the model being used by Novak Djokovic. But rumour has it that Djoko has jumped ship back to Head, which is what he used earlier in his career before biting at the Wilson Euros (then again, there are also rumours that Djoko never changed racquets at all, kept playing with the Head painted to look like a Wilson KBlade, but we digress).

In Saddlebrook, where several of the American players have a base, Dancevic played sets with James Blake (beat him), Mardy Fish (split sets) and the Austrian Jurgen Melzer (was driven crazy by the funky lefty).

Dancevic hit the Challenger circuit last fall to try to get his ranking up high enough that he could get straight into the Australian Open. But it didn't happen; his results were fairly disappointing even if he was able to bump up from No. 150 to No. 130.

All is well, health and attitude-wise. Let's see what 2009 brings.

Frank's attempt to qualify for Brisbane starts later tonight against Sam Groth of Australia. Frank has a fairly tough qualy draw, with the #1 seed, Gabashvili potentially waiting in the next round. Still, I think Frank has a decent chance to make it to the main draw :)

Good luck to Frank in Brisbane and all this year :yeah:

Frank destroyed Groth 6-1 6-0. Destroyed Gabashvili 6-1 6-4.

I'd say that is a promising start to '09. http://www.woolywonder.com/forums/images/smilies/cheerleader.gif

Next up, Korolev (106).

Are you sure of this? The Brisbane livescore has the Groth match going on right now, with it on serve in the first, 3-3. Either ATP or this result is wrong.

Frank gets a much better start in Sydney qualies, he beat Grega Zemlja 6:0 6:2, he was to face the winner of Benneteau-Korolev, but it appears Benneteau is in the main draw or pulled out, and Korolev is playing Golubev. Not sure who Frank will face next

But a very good win, hopefully it will restart his season the right way :yeah:

I'm pretty sure Frank would need to choose in this scenario, there's no special exempt in Grand Slams. A tough choice, hopefully he'll have to make it.

Also, it looks like Frank has a good shot at a top 16 seed for AO qualies, which isn't a huge thing, but would be good, as it would mean an opponent in the 150s, rather than the 110s, as his biggest challenger.

Frank lost, 6:7(2) 3:6

Frank had a break in the first, and held it most of the way, but gave it back when he was serving for the set, and lost the tiebreak. Didn't really seem to generate much in the second. :(

Hopefully he will be able to come up with some big wins in Melbourne :)

Ohhhh poor Frank, so regrettably. The record in Australia is not good.
Now it is possible to participate in the Aussie Open Qualifying by this defeat.
It is complex. :awww:

Frank's qualy draw could be a tough one. The first couple of rounds shouldn't be too bad, but Malisse is a dangerous potential opponent in the final round.

First:
Michel Koning NED

Second:
Dane Propoggia AUS
or
Simone Vagnozzi ITA

Third:
Xavier Malisse BEL
Rajeev Ram USA
Michael Lammer SUI
Alexander Peya AUT (21)

Grand Slam Lucky Losers Changes
Thursday, December 18, 2008

The Grand Slam Committee has approved a new procedure, starting in Australia, for ordering the lucky losers. Procedure is as we previously discussed but here it is again just to be clear:

At the end of qualifying:

0, 1 or 2 lucky loser positions available

The top 4 ranked losing players from the final round qualifying will be drawn at random for the top 4 positions;
The remaining players shall be placed thereafter in order according to the ATP Ranking used for the qualifying seeds;
3 or more lucky loser positions available

The number of players drawn at random will equal the number of LL positions + 2; for example -
If 3 positions are available then there are 5 players in the initial random draw;
If 4 positions are available then there are 6 players in the initial random draw;
The remaining players are positioned thereafter in rank order.

dam0dred
01-17-2009, 08:03 PM
I had no idea they had changed the rules, thanks for that. Makes sense.

We have Kiefer and Volandri to thank for the LL spots. Which means that there were 4 players up for 2 spots. Frank got lucky, let's hope he makes the most of it.

Well, pretty disappointing that he couldn't give Blake more of a challenge. But let's look at the bright side, by getting into the main draw at least he picks up the $20 000 AUD check first rounders get. That should pay for a first class ticket back home, which must be some comfort. :P

Also in the doubles draw with Polansky, they face a qualifier in the first round.

It's being reported that Frank lost 6-1 6-1 to Delgado... if this is true, well, I'm at a bit of a loss for comment.

EDIT: Turns out the score was 6-4 6-1. Still, a pretty lopsided loss considering Delgado is a 32 year old clay court specialist ranked outside the top 250 in the world. A bit of a head scratcher.
