Wild cards announced for SAA Tennis Open
03 February 2008 (14:58)
http://images.supersport.co.za/Klaasen_RavenT2008_001s.JPG Raven Klaasen © Reg Caldecott
The South African Tennis Association (SATA) confirmed Sunday morning the three remaining wild card spots for the forthcoming SAA Tennis Open to be played at Selborne Park Stadium in East London from 11-17 January 2008. The three players will join world number 22, Ivan Ljubicic as the four wild cards in the main draw direct.
They are Raven Klaasen, Izak Van der Merwe and Ruan Roelofse all from South Africa.
This announcement guarantees at least six South African players in the main draw of the tournament.
Klaasen, van der Merwe and Roelofse join fellow South African direct acceptances Rik De Voest, Wesley Moodie and Kevin Anderson in the main draw.
The winner of Saturday’s Cape Classic in Cape Town Raven Klaasen, a former South African Davis Cup player will make his first ATP Tour main draw appearance.
Van der Merwe who like Klaasen has represented his country in Davis Cup was the highest ranked South African on the alternate list. His wild card grant will prevent Van der Merwe from having to contest the challenging qualifying tournament for the remaining main draw spots next weekend.
Roelofse, according to Tournament Director and CEO of SATA, Ian Smith earned his wild card spot through his “talent” and “dedication”.
“Ruan is one of our countries brightest prospects. His commitment to South African tennis and good form of late helped us make the decision to award him with a wild card. SATA are committed through this event to give our promising players of the future a chance of breaking through onto the tour ATP Tour. Hopefully Ruan will take up the opportunity given to him and make that important break” said Smith.

Stormy Weather:

2008/02/12
Organisers forced to reschedule Day One doubles
THERE was drama at Selborne Park, East London, yesterday when a thunderstorm wreaked havoc at the tennis courts during the SAA Open.

The early rain in the morning dissipated in time for the first match between South African wildcard Damian Hume and Frenchman Laurent Recouderc to take place on Centre Court.
However, the grey skies always threatened rain during the morning, but Recouderc heated up the day somewhat when he swept past the 17-year-old within 45 minutes taking a two-setter 6-0, 6-3.
The Frenchman just had too much power in his opening serve and his use of the baseline kept Hume on the backfoot in the first set.
Hume, who came in as a wildcard after the late withdrawals of three players at the weekend, showed glimpses of his talent and fought back to take the match to 5-3 and came close to breaking Redouderc on his serve, but the Frenchman managed to stave off this late storm and won the last two points to advance to the next round.
The second singles match was a ding-dong tussle between two big-hitters – Portugal’s Frederico Gil and Slovakia’s Ivo Klec.
Klec took the first set 7-5 with some fine baseline forehand shots and an opening serve which seem to draw the best out of Gil.
Gil fought well in the second set and led 6-5 after he broke the Slovak’s serve and looked poised to make the breakthrough when the rain gods took matters into their hands.
The grey heavens which threatened rain suddenly burst open and flooded the courts with players, spectators and officials scampering for cover.
The rain, accompanied by heavy gusts of wind, sent chairs and SAA tarpaulins strewn all over the courts. Even the media centre did not escape the brunt of the storm and the officials were left to squelch the damp carpets.
South Africa’s Rik de Voest said he had missed the drama as he was with his masseur at the time. “The other players were all taking pictures of the storm on their cellphones,” said De Voest.
Open spokesperson Bruce Davidson said the doubles set to be played yesterday would be rescheduled to today.
Gil said he is used to rain interruptions and it only needs a mental adjustment.
“I am used to these breaks in play as it has happened before. But one must get ready for the next match.
“It (storms) does happen and sometimes a break in play is good as it gives you the chance to analyse your play,” said Gil.
Gil was certainly not affected by the break and came back to win the second set 7-5 and the third by the same margin to secure a fine win over an opponent who fought to the last.
Swede tennis giants Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson jetted into East London yesterday fresh from their Davis Cup win over Israel in Ramat Hasharon at the weekend.
Sweden had to claw back from 2-1 down overnight to beat Israel 3-2 with Johansson seeing off Dudi Sela 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 7-5 and Bjorkman beating Harel Levy 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).
“I feel pretty good about the win. Thomas saved us on Friday and Sunday,” said Bjorkman at a press conference at Selborne Park yesterday.
“It was a new experience playing in Israel as the crowd really gets into it ... it was a good atmosphere. It was tough, but we had to stay focused.”
Johansson said playing in Davis Cup do take a lot out of you, but they did have some rest on the plane to East London, but as they flew into the city the storm hit.
“I have never seen anything like this. I told JB that the clouds were black out there and then the plane started moving around.
“We stayed on the plane when the pilot turned it around,” said Johansson.
“The pilot did a great job. We could’ve landed in PE,” said Bjorkman.
On South Africa re-emerging as a tennis force, Bjorkman said that there are a number of new countries like Serbia who are making an impact on world tennis.
“South Africa has been a great tennis nation and hopefully tournaments like this (Open) can get the interest up again,” said Bjorkman.
Johansson said top high-ranking players may come up against lower ranked players in this tournament, “but it will still be a tough battle. We are pleased to be at this tournament,” he said.
Bjorkman, the fourth seed, will face Frenchman Augustin Gensse, while Johansson will meet South Africa wildcard Raven Klaasen in their opening matches.
In other matches played yesterday, Brazilian Ricardo Mello beat Pavel Snobel of Czechoslovakia 6-3, 6-2.
Stefano Galvani of Italy beat German Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-3.

De Voest:

Hard-fought win for De Voest

2008/02/12
South African tennis hopeful Rik de Voest was pressed all the way by German Daniel Brands in a first round of the SAA Open at Selborne Park in East London yesterday.

De Voest was taken to two tie-breakers in a match which was as entertaining as it was tense throughout.
The South African won 7-6 (7-6), 7-6 (8-6). The umpire had to rule firmly in a number of wrong line calls from the match officials. At one point during the tie-breaker after De Voest had returned a cross-court forehand and with Brands scrambling to chase down the ball a young ball boy ran after the ball to retrieve it. The Egyptian umpire was forced to call the return a let, depriving De Voest what appeareed a certain winner.
It did not matter in the end though as the South African fifth seed had enough in his tank to hold off the German blitzkrieg.
On the outside court, other South African Heinrich Heyl was blown out of the water 6-1, 6-1 by Swede Marcus Sarstrand, but Izak van der Merwe kept the SA flag flying high by beating Denys Molchanov of Ukraine 7-6, 7-5.
After a period of spitting before the first match the threatened rain cleared and the welcome sun peeked through the heavy clouds. The crowd has also swelled a bit more then the case on Monday.

THERE was more pain for South Africa yesterday at the SAA Open at Selborne Park where highly-touted Wesley Moodie was surprisingly beaten in two sets.

He could not match the serve and volley game of the Spaniard Adrian Menendez and succumbed 6-1, 6-4.

Moodie just seem to have a bad day at the office as he made too many elementary mistakes on points he should've won. That was not so for SA wildcard Ruan Roelofse, who really put up a great fight against Jeremy Chardy of France. This was the battle of the big serves as Chardy was firing on all cylinders on his first and second serve. He took the first set 6-4, but Roelofse was not going to lie down and die and came back strongly to win the second 4-6. But it all came undone in the third and Roelofse lost it when Chardy broke his serve in the third set with the scores deadlocked on 3-3 to forge ahead 4-3 and despite Roelofse's best intentions it was not enough as Chardy close the set off with a fiery ace to win it 6-4. Amid the gloom there was some cheer when Jean Andersen and Raven Klaasen beat fellow South Africans Hendrik Coertzen and Damian Hume 6-2, 6-3 in the doubles match on the outside court. There was a much enthusiastic crowd in the afternoon sessions, but there is still concern at the lack of support from the East London tennis fans. -- Kariem Hassan

Moodie Goes Meekly:

2008/02/12

Top Seeds Goes Through:

Ljubicic made to fight all the way by Ouahab
THERE were a few anxious moments at the SAA Tennis Open at Selborne Park in East London yesterday when the tournament’s big gun fought out a running battle against an Algerian qualifier.

Ivan Ljubicic had the persona of a man who was on a mission to finish the business off quickly.
But the Croatian came up against some stubborn resistance from Lamine Ouahab, who pulled off some rather stunning return shots sprinkled with some deft drop volleys at the net to have the Selborne crowd aghast with bemusement.
Ljubicic, the top seed, started off on the right footing and went into a 5-2 lead in the first set and was gentlemanly about ceding a shot called out by a lines judge after Ouahab made a great return to make it 5-3 to great applause.
He then went up 5-4 after breaking Ljubicic on his serve, but the Croat reciprocated by winning the point off Ouahab’s serve to win the first set 6-4.
The second set brought the best out of Ouahab as he sped after some difficult balls like a gazelle and to boot winning the point with a stunning return. Ouahab took the second set 6-4, and after a titanic battle Ljubicic won the set 6-4 and the match.
The Croat seemed displeased at some of the questionable line calls.
In another exciting match, SA tennis hopeful Rik de Voest was pressed all the way by German Daniel Brands in their first round match yesterday.
De Voest was taken to two tie-breakers in a match which was as entertaining as it was tense throughout.
The South African won 7-6 (7-6), 7-6 (8-6). The match had its light moments. For instance, at one point during the second tie-breaker De Voest returned a cross-court forehand and with Brands scrambling to chase down the ball the young ballboy ran after the ball to retrieve it. The Egyptian umpire was forced to call the return a let, depriving De Voest what appeared a certain winner.

“The wind seemed to have changed the direction of the ball and the boy thought it was out when he went for the ball. I don’t think I was unjustly done by, because if it was the rule then so be it. It was a fair call,” said De Voest about the incident.
It did not matter in the end though as the South African fifth seed had enough in his tank to hold off the German blitzkrieg.
De Voest conceded that it was difficult to find any rhythm against him as he had a strong backhand. The weather was also a factor.
“My wife Caroline says I am the king of the tie-break. Recently I have just won them all. I try to make my first serve and this helps,” he said about the tie-break wins.
“He (Brands) is a new guy, who has a big serve, volleyed pretty well. I like to use court craft to work for me during the game, although I did not have a high return percentage today.”

But the first big surprise of the tournament was the defeat of highly-touted Wesley Moodie, who was surprisingly beaten in two sets. He could not match the serve and volley game of the Spaniard Adrian Menendez and succumbed 6-1, 6-4.
Moodie just seem to have had a bad day at the office as he made mistakes on points he should’ve won rather easily.
That was not so for SA wildcard Ruan Roelofse, who matched Jeremy Chardy of France in the Battle of the Serves.
Chardy was firing on all cylinders on his first and second serve and it was no surprise when he took the first set 6-4, but Roelofse was not going to lie down and die and came back strongly to win the second 4-6.
It all came undone however in the third as Roelofse lost it when Chardy broke his serve in the third set with the scores deadlocked on 3-3 to forge ahead 4-3.
And despite the South African’s best intentions it was not enough as Chardy closed the set off with a fiery ace to win it 6-4.

On the outside court, fellow South African Heinrich Heyl was blown out of the water 6-1, 6-1 by Swede Marcus Sarstrand.
But amid the gloom there was some cheer when Jean Andersen and Raven Klaasen beat fellow South Africans Hendrik Coertzen and Damian Hume 6-2, 6-3 in the doubles match on the outside court.
Izak van der Merwe also kept the SA flag flying high by beating Denys Molchanov of Ukraine 7-6, 7-5 in his match.
In other results yesterday, Josselin Ouanna of France, beat Joseph Sirianni 6-7 (4-6), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2; Gary Lugassy of France Czech Jan Mertl 6-4, 6-2 and SA’s Kevin Anderson bt Filip Prpic of Sweden 6-2, 6-2.
In the other doubles of the day, Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe beat Frenchmen Augustin Gensse and Laurent Recouderc running out 6-0, 6-2 winners. - By KARIEM HASSAN

1.15-1.20? Geez Croatian bookies are mean... Well, it's kinda obvious Gesse has some good challenger scores in his career and Bjorkman was tired after the DC, and the doubles, well Bjorkman is class, Ullyett used to be class - the score looks normal. 1.40 looks like a fair deal to me.

The hopes of one of Sweden's top players, Jonas Bjorkman, was dashed by the never-say-die approach of Frenchman Augustin Gennse at the SAA Tennis Open on Wednesday.

The Frenchman beat the fourth seed in one of the enthralling singles games of the day. Gensse took the first set 6-3 and he appeared headed for an easy win when he went up 4-1, but Bjorkman gave a spirited fightback and clawed himself back from the brink of sure defeat to 5-5 in the second set.

Gensse hold his nerve however and won the vital points.

Bjorkman lost it on his serve when he double-faulted to give Gensse the 7-5 win. Gensse said the win was his biggest he has had and he hoped to break into the world top 100. The 24-year-old is currently ranked 249 on the world rankings.
