Why not creating a specific thread for the Davis Cup? I dare to say that they won't lose in the first round.
The previous years we had a specific thread dedicated to the dc.

I thought about it too. And I also think your country will not lose in the first round.
Okay if you want, I will make a thread for DC. ;)

Very strong field in Marseille this year. It is very dense too, so big names will probably be knocked out from the first round.

The tournament in Marseille should be the most interesting "Mickey Mouse" event in 2008.

Dubai does not count. We all know why players choose to play there. Almost none of them tries his best as they prefer to save energy for the big ones in Miami and Indian Wells.

Well, it's more than half (300 vs 500 for wins :p )
And there will be 6-7 days to recover from Dubai and adjust to new conditions in Indian Wells (where 2nd round matches start on Sat or Sun, following week)

Let's just say if he reaches semis or finals there (or even wins) we probably won't complain too much right? :D

Good draw except for one minor problem - Tsonga in the quarters!!

Richie can certainly beat Tsonga but judging by Richie's comments about Jo during DC I don't think Richie thinks he can beat him and that spells defeat. Maybe a few emergency sessions with Noah will do the trick or maybe Tsonga will have a post AO/DC hangover.

That's true with Richie every round has the potential for a surprise. I was just assuming what SHOULD happen but we all know there is such a thing as "upsets" and Richie has certainly had his share.

Would LOVE to see Richie full of confidence and run through the draw. Looks like the top half might open up cuz sounds like Djoke is still not well as he retired in his Davis Cup match today.

Red shirt - seems the most appropriate color for him these days :). The same red as last year or BRIGHT RED? Loved the AO orange but maybe that did not match the courts, we know how stylish he is :)

Just saw that he won with 17 aces! Know his opponent was not the greatest but 17 aces in a 6-3, 6-3 match is pretty good for anyone.

He is just very insecure on the court. He is afraid of everything. 3 times that he lost his serve and Soderling hit exactly 1 good shot in those games, the rest was Richard's missed first serves, double faults and passive play. :(

I even stopped watching after 4-1.

This was a poor performance. Serving below 40% in the second and third set, playing with little belief and in the end slow on his feet, too. Even the first set was very average, Richard won it more because of Söderling's errors than on his own merits.

I really wonder how you can serve 17 aces one day, and not get the ball into the couurt the day thereafter. Marseille will always be difficult for him, too close to DC.

Good question! What on earth goes on in his head??? :banghead:

He could not have been exhausted, mentally or physically after DC this year, unless the go-go dancing was more exhausting than it looked.

Neglecting the dancing, I think he does give it all for DC, even if the match itself was not that tiring. He was just empty today. Add the memories from last year, and you have the result.

Besides, I think he still suffers from his hampered preparation in the off season. Frankly, I did not expect much early this year.

Still, this was sad to see today.

I really hope he was not empty today because of giving his all for one Davis Cup match 5 days ago. To go deep in a Grand Slam or Masters he'll have to give his all for 5-7 matches in 7-14 days.

I luv him to death and will continue to cheer and support him because he is a classy (and adorable) guy with a magical game that seems to have gotten a little lost over the past year. However in keeping with the spirit of the day (Valentine's day), I'll remain a hopeless romantic who believes he can and will find the magic again.

Our Boy lost a match today he was expected to win, I don't envy the French Players playing with all the pressure & expectations placed on them, We know all about the French Open & how difficult the players find to play with all the media circus!

I'm sure Richie will shine for us sooner then later, & it's so early in the season, & with lack of preperation with Injuries etc...

I know we'd all love to see him go far into every tournement he plays.... I'm not giving up on him.... He had one of those days like many other seeded players!

If this was happening week after week & we were deep into the season, then I'd be a little worried, It's a long year & anythings possible!.... The best is just around the corner! I'm sure when it does happen a lot will be pleased, that's the joys of following Richie....
You take the good results with the bad results.....

Just my little say on how I see things!

I do think that DC takes out more in another way, there is a reason why the very top players don't play it regularly, and this reason is not only that there is no mone for it.

In the interview on the Website of the French Federation, Richard also mentions his poor preparation during the off-season. I have been suspicious about this for a long time, and he more or less confirms it, that he did not have the best start into 2008. None of his matches in 2008 was really great and he needs more practice. He also said he will take a break for the weekend and then start a serious 10-day practice period before going to Dubai. He sounded disappointed, but not demotivated. The last sentence is like "it is up to me to train a lot."

What can you say after such a rather honest self-assessment than "allez, Richard."

Well, he only had 1 match in DC and it was in Europe on similar surface, so if anything it should have helped his preparations... I mean there are players who play on different surface and on different continents and still perform better.

Now, a very important stretch begins with Dubai, IW and Miami. I hope he prepares better.

Youzhny has tons of points to defend next few weeks, so I don't think it will be him who will pass him. But, overall it is not about ranking right now, he just has to find his game and believe he can beat them all. Right now, he doesn't.

The thing is he has never had good results in the beginning of the season (including the AO) and we could have expected him to have a good start after his first time in Shangai. Well it's true that his preparation had been hampered by an injury but still I was expecting him to do better than last year in Marseille. It didn't happen.. this match was very painful to watch.
Hopefully, Richard will find his game and will have some good results in the coming MS (where he has never shone either)

I liked his interview too. He is very lucid about his situation, his passive attitude in matches... He even talked about his match at the AO against Tsonga where he lost for the same reason as yesterday. He's very critical towards himself but, in the same time, he seems motivated to get back to practice and improve.

cut the bs richard, get aggressive and fight, believe in urself...if u can be no.7 in the world with pure talent imagine what a little drive and dare i say discipline can do?..top it off with better conditioning ie. skip into the gym every so often...voila top 5 player easy and KNOWING u belong there more importantly..

Hampered preparation?...He trained 4 hours a day in the offseason....

But for how long? A week? He had to interrupt his preparation because of the knee injury, which had already troubled him in Lyon, and the reports about the length of the interruption differ, from one to three weeks. I would not call that a proper preparation.

You'd better do, apparently you too much make gossip things around here.
Normally I don't draw the line of the thread's topic and it's okay people disgress from the subject on the way of talking, but you brought this kind of things up out of nowhere.
I appreciate that you shared with your personal experience with him and it was intriguing. But don't you think it's a little bit of too much now then? As much as I myself am a fangirl who loves hearing gossips, I'm really sick of being informed about his private life instead of his tennis all this year.
May be if he's playing well in the tournaments, I wouldn't be bothered by all those crap talks, but his career of this year has been a shit, which does make me disappointed with him because he doesn't seem to pay attention to his career but to fool around for getting a girl or enjoying his own life, even if it's not true. I don't mean it's bad, but at least his career should be going well along with them.
However, I bet some of fans would like to listen and technically I'm not entitled to block what people say. You can talk whatever you want in the chat and photo thread. But you've got to leave some space out for fans who are not comfortable with gossips and like to talk about his tennis.

The timing of these 2 matches would be perfect for me to see on a livestream (at work, while I'm supposed to be working :secret:). Does anyone know if there will be a live stream available for us neglected tennis fans in the US?

As far as doubles, I think Richard likes playing doubles and it is good for him- helps him practice the aggressive shots and mindset he should have in singles. And gives him some not as streneous match practice if he happens to exit the singles early :tape: But not this time - Time to show what #7 can do (or will he drop to #8 after Nalbandian's final this week?)

Frankly ranking is secondary to how he performs. I don't care if he's 7 or 8 as long as he is getting better. Right now he is number 7 but has been playing pretty crappy. Back then when he was 15 he played way better like in Toronto.

Tursunov's mistakes gave Richie a break at the beginning of each set which made him more confident. I think the second set was quite good, some nice touch at the net and trademark BHs towards the end. But the best was his serving, consistently over 200 ks, often over 210.

Even if he got broken, when serving for the match, I never had the feeling he could lose this. Well done!

Even if he got broken, when serving for the match, I never had the feeling he could lose this. Well done!

I wasn't quite so sure... After he came back from 0-40 on his first service game after he broke Dima to start the second set I was thinking he's not going to loose now. But then he had a little wobble when serving at 5-2 and I started to think - hope he's not thinking what I'm thinking - guess he wasn't because he closed it out with a strong service game. And his backhand started firing when he became confident

The only thing that makes this less than a great day is that Murray beat Fed, I don't mind that Fed lost but I really DO mind that is was Murray who beat him.

Good Job RIchie and the Dima monkey is off your back. NOw let's make some noise in Dubai!!

I’m late today, but I had promised to post it next time L’Equipe would say something about Richie, so here you are, Puschkin – sorry if it was already posted:
He says that sometimes he plays 2 meters behind his baseline, but this time he wasn’t afraid to take risks, playing serve & volley on a second serve on a big point, combined with a dropshot volley. He feels rewarded for all the work after Marseille. 6 hours every day with Deblicker and Pérotte, with 4 hours tennis, it was clearly more than he usually does. The best preparation of his life!

Good question!!! Amazing what a little hard work can do.

I guess I really did see him serve volley on a 2nd serve big point - thought my eyes (or my brain) were playing tricks on me. And he really did tee off on a FEW service retuns from on or inside the baseline but there was STILL way too much hitting from outer space. But one step at a time.

I think he needs more then couple practice sessions.. the score says match was relatively close but if you look in detail, it was one way traffic... he seriously needs to make some important changes in his game, fitness, preparation, maybe even coaching. If Andreev, who had terrible results this year so far could beat him so easily, then I don't want to know what will happen if and when he faces 100% fit Djokovic...

Yes, something MAJOR needs to change but I don't think his fitness has really been an issue so far this year - he never went deep enough into a tournament for that to be a problem. I think it's a mental thing but really have no idea, just know that as frustrating as it is for us, it has to be a thousand times worse for Richie.

Right now he clearly lack determination and belief. I think he is honestly satisfied to just stay in top 10 (the thing is he won't stay there, if he will continue playing like this) and he said many times that he is doing very well. He said will be able to beat Federer in only 2 years (now, name me another player who will show so much weakness by saying that..). Murray and Djokovic are beating Roger NOW and even if they weren't, they would still believe they COULD beat him. He just has to change his whole approach to success and to the game if he wants to take that next step. Just my opinion.

Just checked out some Stats. Richie's second serve % is a mere 26% to Igor's 80%. Igor just hammered him on his second serve. Just poor serving on Richie's part. Credit to Igor for taking advantage. So yes Richie was pretty much pressured.

Get some motivation Richie, and get practising.

That's probably what happened, but that is even worse then if Richard just played bad for various reasons:

1. Richard is top 10, Andreev is 34 (never been higher then 24)
2. Hardcourt should be better surface for Richard then to Igor

At the very least, the match should have been close if Richard didn't play well, but it wasn't that close...

So, Igot Andreev who dominated Richard just got crushed by Novak 6-1, 6-2. Oh well...

Moving on to Indian Wells.

But let's look at positive side: His best performance so far this year was at the biggest event - Australian Open. The rest of the tournaments he played so far are not very significant. Let's hope he wakes up in Pacific Life Open for another few weeks of good tennis.

Sometimes I think he gets paralyzed by wanting to win too badly.

Might be true. He's too intense when he gets on the court.
I think it's also about his concentration. Sometimes he wants the match done as quickly as possible, sometimes he loses his focus all of a sudden due to strain, which means he's too much ups and downs at every moment. One day his play is so good that it seems we don't have to worry about his next round, but Bam! the next day he screws it and falls out of the tournament. He's too inconsistent in mental aspect, even in one match, we usually see his best and worst performance at the same time.. like against Roddick in Wimbledon.
As a matter of fact, although he already knows what's his problem according to his interviews and sometimes he's even furious with that after he lost, it seems to me that he doesn't mend his ways after all.

I don't like Djokovic at all, but I respect his mental toughness. It's not his natural ability, but he gained it for himself with his own belief that he can do anything, which Richard needs the most right now IMO.

He's not that young anymore. I think he has enough defeats he should learn from.

Andy has played really well since COnners left. If parting with a coach does this - Hey Richie take note. I love Eric and really don't want to start the coach thing again but something to think about...

I just wanted to introduce myself because i am new here. My name is Naina and I am a huge Richie fan. I think a coaching change might do Richard good but he is the player he knows whats best for his game.

You might be wrong.

Hoy,

He's gonna win 6 matches each in IW and Miami. I am sure about that this time.

The time for your travel to Europe is fast approaching.
Haven't you said that you'll be in Europe from April to July to watch Richie playing in many important tournaments?

I can feel your excitement from here. :)

Yes, and I'll also travel to Ukraine with my girlfriend. I am visiting Estoril, Monte Carlo, Rome, Hamburg, French and Wimbledon. That'd be enough to spend the money I earned in 5 years, which is my aim.

Anyone here that'll travel to any of these tournaments above. We can meet and even have a game of tennis if you like. I love to play tennis and I am reasonably good at it.

2nd: Soderling (or Grosjean) : could not be much worse but it's outdoor.
3rd: Tursunov (or Chela) : The surface is quite slow. It's ok i think.
1/8: Blake/Moya/Ginepri. It's good for Richard.
1/4: Nadal/Tsonga/Lalo/PHM: Not bad i think.

I believe

I know I said I didn't expect anything from this tournament BUT hopefully Richard will take revenge over Soderling. It could be really good for his confidence.

HUMMM. Not bad. He should have never lost to Soderling or Tursunov and a slower court SHOULD work in Richie's favor for these 2 but we never know. I think he will finally be sick of loosing to guys he can beat and turn it on at IW - at least I hope!

ALLEZ RICHIE, first revenge on Soderling.

Hey Getta, it's been a while. :wavey:

Thanks for replying my question. ;)
