No scores yet I gave them a call. They said maybe a few scores in a little while but the guy kind of hinted it might not be the best idea to call. However he did give me an email address so I guess feel free to shoot him an email in about an hour or so to get some scores.

It can be if your webmaster is a volunteer who works full time during the day and maintains your website on his own time in the evening. I know that this is true for one particular American challenger. Many of these challengers run on a very shoe string budget in the US and having a good website is very low on their list of priorities.

ok i can understand that fee, then who is at fault the atp or the usta for not allocating enough funds? (and the uk challenegrs are often worse - i'm not on an anti US thing or anyhting) its just a shame in this day and age that its so often not available.

It's not the ATP, Challengers are governed by the national federations in most cases. In the US, the USTA governs a boatload of tournaments each year from the tour level on down, and there is only so much money to go around. That is why you rarely see a circuit tournament in the same location for more than 3 years. The USTA pays prize money the first year, and each subsequent year their percentage goes down. It's hard to get sponsors for these events when there is so much competition for those same dollars from other local events and tennis seems to be such a hard sell in the US.

I could go on and on, believe me I understand the frustration of tennis fans when it comes to getting scores from Challenger events, but I've been close enough to certain aspects of tournament business that I understand how so much of it is driven by money (or the lack thereof).

Actually the live scoring, etc. depends on your manpower you have at the tournament, not really the $. We don't get paid very much, we do this for our club, the recognition(to try and get the USTA to get us out to other Challengers) and fans. This will be our second year to do it fulltime, and most of the work comes from me and another guy, but we are lucky to have help in other areas that dont get airtime. This will be our 10th year to host the Dallas Challenger and each year we have grown and realized the mistakes we have made the previous years and tried to build on those. We are hoping in the near future to bump our 50k to a 75 or 100k tourney. Our biggest enjoyment out of doing the live scoring, player interviews, etc is the reaction we get from fans, players and coaches. When you have someone like Eric Butorac call his family and tell them to get online and watch the post match highlights is a cool thrill. We admit, we aren't ESPN commentators and don't do this other than one time a week, but I guarantee, there isn't another Challenger on the US circuit that will give you full coverage like we do. I mean come on, how often do you get to see Bobby Reynolds pour a bucket of ice water all over Robert Kendricks head or have Kendricks coach try to hit Robert below the belt? On the Challenger circuit, not often. Matter of fact, players know they can't act like that on The Tennis Channel or ESPN, so when they get the opportunity to cut up, we have the ability to let them.

BTW, looks like Robert Kendrick will be coming to Dallas to defend his title.

The Dallas Challenger is lucky to have those kinds of resources and volunteers, and I'm sure the fans and the players appreciate all of your work (I know I do, I looked at your site a lot last year) . The Aptos Challenger is another one that has a long history, but if you look at the last few years, you see tournaments that tried and could not sustain their spot on the calendar - Boston is one, Tiburon was out for a while but might be coming back, Sacramento is not on the calendar for this year yet, Calabasas comes and goes, some in So Cal, Forest Hills comes and goes, etc (forgive my failing memory). Obviously, the situation is different for each event, but money is a factor.

just wait a couple of more days people and you wont have to be complaining about not getting scores. the dallas challenger will be here in 2 more days. we are almost 90% sure to have a secret for you guys that will spoil tennis fans for the rest of the year. at least challenger following fans......sorry, but i cant spoil the surprise, you'll just have to wait and SEE what it will be.
