So far Filippo is a break up and leads 3-1 with Sargsian serving.

Forza Vo-lan-dri

Sargsian will win - better grass game.

Flippo one won game on hardcourt all season!

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:38 AM
Volandri only played 3 mtahces on hard. The ones he lost were against calleri and Ferrero and the game he won was against Kiefer. Not so bad.

At the end of last year he did very bad on the hard courts but that was because he was playing with a back injury, he just wanted to play to try and get his rankings higher.

I admit that Sargsian is better on grass but Volandri who I saw at Wimbledon last year had the potential on grass, he played some points but his incosistency kills him on grass. One thing you need to be on grass is consistent otherwise you will go downhill fast.

Anyway Volandri 5-2 up now with 2 breaks.

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:41 AM
Yep - Volandri takes the first.

Let's see how he manages now.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:41 AM
Volandri won the first set 6-2

I wont get too excited, he did this last year when I saw him at Wimbledon, won the first set 6-2 before having 2 horrible sets... had a decent 4th set but that wasnt enough as he lost it.

but still I have faith in you Filippo...

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:44 AM
Are you watching this live?

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:45 AM
Volandri is excellent on clay (shame about Roland Garros) but I wonder if he can keep up the pace on grass.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:45 AM
No, There is nowhere I can watch it live. I live in England.. even though I have the Italian flag next to my name.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:47 AM
Volandri breaks at the start of the second. i really hope he keeps it up. His serve is crap so he is bound to be broken soon.

His form going into Roland Garros was great, he won the title the week before which is probably why he lost in round 1. Still he is young, he should have other chances.

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:47 AM
Volandri has broken again - looks like his match now!

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:49 AM
Sargsian must be playing awful - can't return anything it seems.

I thought Volandri would be broken easy!

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:50 AM
Thats what i thought, his serve on grass is so funny, his serve on any surface is quite funny. Thats the one thing he will need to improve if he wants to reach the top 20 which the rest of his game has the potential to do. He is even a good player at the net.

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:50 AM
I can't believe he lost in the first round - i really thought he would do well there.

Maybe the surprise package of the tournament at RG. But was not meant to be.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:51 AM
Fish takes the first set 6-4 against David Prinosil.

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:51 AM
What speed does he serve at?

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:52 AM
I think Volandri relaxed too much. I didnt see his match but I heard his interview before the tournament and he said things like that he had a good first round match to play. With him being a wild card from France etc.

Maybe he went into the match with a relaxed attitude, which is not what you need.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:53 AM
His speed must be very slow, I am not sure what average speed he is at but it must be nearer the womens game serve than the mens lol

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:54 AM
Here we go... Volandri 15-40 Sargsian

hes been broken as expected. 2-2 Now we will see Sargis win.

Fish-Prinosil 6-4 0-1

elroyf
06-07-2004, 10:55 AM
To me, Volandri just looks weak - his build is too small.

It is great for clay, but not hardcourt/grass.

Finally Sargsian break!

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 10:57 AM
Volandri has quite strong arms and shoulders which is what should matter, but its just the way he serves, his puts alot of spin on it which makes it sit up and be very slow.

SuperRevelation
06-07-2004, 10:59 AM
These games are taking a while..

elroyf
06-07-2004, 11:00 AM
He can be a very good player and can challenge the best on clay, as shown by this year. But I can't see him winning much on the fast courts unless he physically changes.

jturpin4 - is gonzalez playing grass?

elroyf
06-07-2004, 11:02 AM
There are problems with the scoreboard I think

SuperRevelation

Champion number 1

Sargsian is now wooping Volandri haha now he will lose.

Well Volnadri until last year hardly ever played a match on hard or grass courts so this is why he is so comfortbale on clay. I think his ground strokes are quite pwerful, especially his backhand, but with a serve like the one he has he wont go too far on the fast courts.

elroyf
06-07-2004, 11:06 AM
Tennis is completely different from fast courts and clay - it is so weird.

There are basically two different sets of players. Occasionally some can play on both eg Agassi, Kuerten and Federer

Yes well I suppose players like Volandri or the Argentines who like to build up points and have longer rallies will get wooped off the court when it is a faster court.

Voandri 2-5 down now, still only 1 break but he needs to concentrate on set number 3.

Players like the Argentinians will disappear now. With the exception of maybe Nalbandian and maybe Coria.

I think clay shows great skill to be honest.

This match is Sargsians now - has the momentum.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 11:10 AM
Sargsian takes set two 6-2

Now its the third, come on Volandri, its a new set. You can still make a fresh start.

Champion number 1
06-07-2004, 11:12 AM
I know Volandri wont do much for the next 3 weeks now but I just want him to go through because it could be an all Italian round 2 I think. Well of course Seppi (Italian) faces another clay court specialist trying to adpat to grass... Davydenko. Seppi has half a chance there as Seppi has a quite good all court game but he is still young and needs to build up a bit. Thats for tomorrow though

Forza Volandri!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I agree, winning on clay certainly needs more ability and more shots

nevertheless, I enjoy watching it sooo much! :D

Tommy Haas :yippee: :bounce: :bounce:
that was not an easy match, Feli has a good serve for grass and played a good tournament in Paris
maybe it was an advantage for Tommy that he had more time to prepare for grass
but a good win though

you should have done better, but Clement was really strong with good returns
hope to see you winning soon

yes!!!! the grass season is your time
sure, Pavel not a real grasscourt player, but Popp showed some nice stuff, good serves and good returns to break Pavel in the 2nd and 3rd set.
