Volandri only played 3 mtahces on hard. The ones he lost were against calleri and Ferrero and the game he won was against Kiefer. Not so bad.

At the end of last year he did very bad on the hard courts but that was because he was playing with a back injury, he just wanted to play to try and get his rankings higher.

I admit that Sargsian is better on grass but Volandri who I saw at Wimbledon last year had the potential on grass, he played some points but his incosistency kills him on grass. One thing you need to be on grass is consistent otherwise you will go downhill fast.

Anyway Volandri 5-2 up now with 2 breaks.

I wont get too excited, he did this last year when I saw him at Wimbledon, won the first set 6-2 before having 2 horrible sets... had a decent 4th set but that wasnt enough as he lost it.

Volandri is excellent on clay (shame about Roland Garros) but I wonder if he can keep up the pace on grass.

No, There is nowhere I can watch it live. I live in England.. even though I have the Italian flag next to my name.

Volandri breaks at the start of the second. i really hope he keeps it up. His serve is crap so he is bound to be broken soon.

His form going into Roland Garros was great, he won the title the week before which is probably why he lost in round 1. Still he is young, he should have other chances.

Thats what i thought, his serve on grass is so funny, his serve on any surface is quite funny. Thats the one thing he will need to improve if he wants to reach the top 20 which the rest of his game has the potential to do. He is even a good player at the net.

I can't believe he lost in the first round - i really thought he would do well there.

Maybe the surprise package of the tournament at RG. But was not meant to be.

What speed does he serve at?

I think Volandri relaxed too much. I didnt see his match but I heard his interview before the tournament and he said things like that he had a good first round match to play. With him being a wild card from France etc.

Maybe he went into the match with a relaxed attitude, which is not what you need.

His speed must be very slow, I am not sure what average speed he is at but it must be nearer the womens game serve than the mens lol

To me, Volandri just looks weak - his build is too small.

It is great for clay, but not hardcourt/grass.

Volandri has quite strong arms and shoulders which is what should matter, but its just the way he serves, his puts alot of spin on it which makes it sit up and be very slow.

These games are taking a while..

He can be a very good player and can challenge the best on clay, as shown by this year. But I can't see him winning much on the fast courts unless he physically changes.

Well Volnadri until last year hardly ever played a match on hard or grass courts so this is why he is so comfortbale on clay. I think his ground strokes are quite pwerful, especially his backhand, but with a serve like the one he has he wont go too far on the fast courts.

Tennis is completely different from fast courts and clay - it is so weird.

There are basically two different sets of players. Occasionally some can play on both eg Agassi, Kuerten and Federer

Yes well I suppose players like Volandri or the Argentines who like to build up points and have longer rallies will get wooped off the court when it is a faster court.

Seppi has half a chance there as Seppi has a quite good all court game but he is still young and needs to build up a bit. Thats for tomorrow though
