Tennis Tipping # 67 = Shanghai

What is Tennis Tipping?

In the game, participants pick the winners of all main draw matches and are placed in a knock-out system. That means each participant plays a different participant and whoever predicted the winner of most matches correctly, moves on to the next round. The same applies for doubles, but you're in a team format and your scores are combined.

Note:

- In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will decide who moves on to the next round.
New tie-break method: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=4489037&postcount=1

- In case a player (i.e. the actual ATP Player) retires in a match, this match will be counted as long as one point has been played. If players are replaced by a lucky loser after the start of Tennis Tipping, these matches will be cancelled.

How to Sign-Up:

Just post here that you would like to play. You can only play one tournament per week. Entries will be based on ranking. Everyone can commit. :D

Please read this post for more information

How to send in picks:

Picks can be sent in as soon as the draws are ready. Remember, you pick a winner in every match! Picks should be sent by PM, so that your opponent does not know your picks. Picks should be titled: [TT: Newport, day #]. Picks can be sent in anytime until the beginning of play each day. If you're still in both singles & doubles, you use the same tips for both. For doubles, you still tip the ATP singles matches, not the doubles! No changes can be made after the play has started.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE

If the board goes down as has happened before, send your picks to dc1zkotw@hotmail.com

TT Commentary

Sunday's Commentary

After a few technical problems relating out of the internet crashing, and then Israel scoring a late winner, we have to apologise for their being no commentary up for the last couple of days. But we are able to provide a report based on the final, and send out our congratulations to Ketqtiadv and Tytta/Virex, who are the 2007 Tennis Tipping Masters Cup Champions.

Ketqtiadv was always in control of his final over Aleskz, boosted by the knowledge that he needed to win the match to end the year as world number 1, and had defeated Greatkingrat in the semi finals in a close match. Aleskz meanwhile had had an easier win over Coreyschucky, who keeps the record of Americans not being able to play outside of their own country alive.

Ketqtiadv dominated the first set of his match, not allowing Aleskz much of a look-in in the early going, and in the end that was enough as Aleskz just couldn’t find a way back into the match. Ketqtiadv won the match to secure yet another title of a record breaking season for him, and means he ends the year as world number 1, and with only a R32 in the Australian Open to defend (losing to an outstanding player:)) , has a good chance to move further up the rankings.

The doubles ranking was already secured going into the last match, with Scarecrows having already secured that position, and for a long time it looked as if he and Andre would celebrate that success with the title. But Tytta/Virex managed to battle back and took it to a final set tie-break which they won convincingly, but seemed to be unaware of the win to begin with. This meant that Brazil had done the double with both singles and doubles titles.

We would like to thank all the players for their performances this week, and with them all the best in the new year.
But now the circuit moves onto THE event of the year, that being the Shrewsbury challenger, where someone is defending their title...

Thursday’s Commentary

We now know what the semi final line ups will be. In singles, Greatkingrat takes on Ketqtiadv, while Coreyschucky plays Aleskz. In doubles, Tytta/Virex take on GustavoM_Fan/Nadie and Bavaria100/Kindablue play Andre/Scarecrows.

But the day wasn’t as simple as this first seems, with play resuming after yesterday’s unscheduled wrestling match caused play to be abandoned for the day. And the 4 singles match finished rather quickly, with the 4 players who led overnight each going on to claim a straight sets victory and the 100 ranking points that it entailed. It also meant that Qczi and Tomek. failed in their comebacks, saying it was 1 step too far for them, and means that in the semi finals we have 3 of the top 4 players in the world, 2 of whom could still finish the year at number 1.

We also saw a shock of all shocks as Scythe19pro finally scored her first win in 6 attempts in round robin play when she defeated Aleskz, who confirmed that he tanked the match in order to prepare himself for the semi finals, and also because he felt sorry for the Romanian who would look as if she couldn’t cope with the pressure if she went winless for 2 years in a row. In fact, the only person who went winless was Linus, who also tanked her singles match to prepare for her sudden death doubles match later on in the day, leaving Greatkingrat with a 100% record and the strong favourite to win the title.

Doubles saw Bavaria100/Kindablue complete a 100% record as well when their opponents Savestheday91/Sheva undertook a strange tactic to throw the match in order to give themselves the best chance of winning in a 3 way tie situation, if it came down to that. Unfortunately, all their careful plans failed when GustavoM_Fan/Nadie came through against Ria/A_Skywalker, meaning that the doubles team who don’t communicate with each other have qualified for the semi finals.

Joining them are Tytta/Virex who lost to Alansk/Scythe19pro, giving them a good finish to what was bit an unlucky tournament for them, as they hit the most winners of any team, yet will finish bottom of the group, due to losing their nerve at crucial moments. Andre/Scarecrows completed the line up when they came through a nervy encounter in the evening match. All was looking good for them at one stage, but the home crowd roared on Linus/Labamba to get back into the match, and they were very close to forcing a 3rd set, but in the end they just didn’t take their chances and were sent home.

But then we had a massive shock, the organisers had decided that to entertain the fans they were going to trial a new concept for the ATP – the split day match. The players were told that they would play the opening set of their match, and then the next match would come on and they would finish off tomorrow. The idea being, the fans get to see their heroes play at least twice now, and so should boost attendances and profits for tennis.

This of course has totally ruined our method of prediction (post counts gave 5/8), and so we now have to advice you on matches that are 1 set old, which means that there may be some bias shown in what is predicted...

Court of Champions

Bavaria100 (GER)/Kindablue (CYP) vs. Andre (POR)/Scarecrows (ALB)

In the set that was played today, it was Andre/Scarecrows who won a tight first set on a tie break, and so go into day 2 of the match is a good position, especially when head cheerleader Nathaliia has returned to the courtside to cheer them on. But could the pressure of the situation get to them, especially as the winner of this match (Bavaria100 vs. Scarecrows) will end the year as the world number 1. They had a hard match on court earlier today while Bavaria100/Kindablue cruised through their match and have yet to lose as a pair, and so have all the confidence in the world behind them. Kindablue is going for a second TMC title in a row so knows that it is like to win here, and beat Andre in last years final, so has history on his side, but will it be enough

Prediction: Andre/Scarecrows to battle through in 3 close fought sets, recovering from a break down in the decider to steal the match, the number 1 spot and the girl

Tytta (BRA)/Virex (BRA) vs. GustavoM_Fan (ARG)/Nadie (RUS)

Surely the fact that GustavoM_Fan and Nadie don’t appear to ever communicate with each other will cost them at some point? But they got to the semi finals so far, and have beaten established pairings, so they have obviously got some ability to do what they are doing. But Tytta/Virex are a different kettle of fish, and the Brazilians, known for their luck took the first set today and are in a strong position. There could be overconfidence in the camp though, with their predicted rematch against Andre/Scarecrows in the final possibly coming true. GustavoM_Fan/Nadie have battled against the odds so far, so can they keep the run going?

Prediction: Tytta/Virex come through in a tight second set and make the final, giving a party on the beaches of Rio de Janerio

Aleskz (HUN) vs. Coreyschucky (USA)

Aleskz had an easy ride today with the non-effort in his first match, followed by what happened in the opening set of this match... Coreyschucky just didn’t show up at all, made some unfathomable errors and had a total disaster. Fortunately for him he gets the chance to recover and think about what he did, but it is still an uphill task for him. But that will take the pressure off of him, as everyone expects him to lose, so can come out and swing from the hip. Aleskz has known this pressure before, and has a great chance of finishing the year as well as it started, but must be weary of the American’s bouncebackability

Prediction: Aleskz to recover from the loss of the second set to cruise through the 3rd set to make the final

Greatkingrat (GBR) vs. Ketqtiadv (BRA)

The big match of the day, with the winner ending the year ranked as world number 1, putting the pressure on both men. Ketqtiadv is the only one of the semi finalists yet to win a Grand Slam, so that must count against him, while Greatkingrat has won 2, and so knows how to win these kind of matches. As so it showed today, taking the opening set after a long and arduous tiebreak, and proving himself to be the big match player. And this will work in his favour as it must mean that the notoriously safe play of Ketqtiadv may have to be abandoned for a reckless abandon from him, and when he has had to play that way this year he has invariably lost.

Prediction: Ketqtiadv though gets lucky, as he keeps it as tight as he can but springs out just enough to come from behind as Greatkingrat invokes the spirit of British sport and becomes the nearly man.

Wednesday’s Commentary

Today was supposed to see the confirmation of all the semi finalists, but as in always the way, this hasn’t quite managed to be the case. The Chinese wrestlers who interrupted the opening days play made a shock re-appearance, bursting through the crowd at a crucial moment in the match, and then decided it would be a good idea to practice their stuff on the court. Most of the matches were balanced finely, when the lights went out, the gong hit, and the Chinese version of the Undertaker came onto the courts, and got involved in a match with the Chinese version of Hulk Hogan...

But onto the matches that did happen, and it looks as if Ketqtiadv and Coreyschucky in prime position to join Greatkingrat and Aleskzzjsks in the semi finals. Ketqtiadv stook to his tried and tested formula of playing it safe and sticking with what the bookie’s would see as the best shot, while Coreyschucky decided to be as American as possible, brashly walking onto the court with his American flag wrapped around him and his big mac and fries in hand, which intimated by Tomek. into submission, and later claimed he had lost the plot on court. Both Tomek. and Qczi will have to pull off comebacks if they are to make the semi finals.

The doubles draw still appears to be up for grabs with all the matches still in the balance. In fact, the highest quality match was the only dead rubber with Tytta/Virex against Alansk/Scythe19ro being full of superb play and high quality winners. But... Alansk got himself involved in a spat with the organisers, accusing them of touching a nerve when they made a mistake in listing the order of play... the organisers then said that his comments would be a lot more interesting if he had actually won some matches this week.

Scarecrows and Andre are in pole position to join the Brazilians in the semi finals after taking the first set of their match against Labamba/Linus. However, there were accusation that Labamba was seen out drinking the night before and was drunk on court, which would explain why he was falling over so much in the first set.

The Red Group is still up in the air as well, but Bavaria100/Kindablue are in pole position to qualify after taking the first set against Savestheday91 and Sheva, and having an early break in the second set. If they can just hold out, then they will top the group with 100% and make sure they make the semi finals.

The other qualifier is still unknown, but GustavoM_Fan/Nadie would qualify if the matches stayed in the same state that they currently are, as they have a very slight lead over Ria/A_Skywalker.

Join us again tomorrow when we should have the results of the final group matches, along with who the 4 qualifiers in singles and doubles will be, and previews of the semi final matches.

Tuesday's Commentary

After one of the worst days in tennis tipping history, there have be 3 qualifiers for the semi finals, while 3 people will be on the flight home very soon after experiencing a sad end to their tournament.

The Red Group saw Greatkingrat open the day by recording his second win of the competition, and so progress through to the semi finals as group winner. It appears that his time off before Shanghai has paid off, as while the rest of the players were battling the Paris metro system in order to make it to Bercy, he was off resting in the London Underground in order for his campaign in China. His win means that tomorrow he is involved in a dead match against Linus, but this is a match that he could do with winning to strength his grip on the number 1 spot.

Linus’s loss today to Tomek. who did manage to cope with the pressure that he put on himself means that she is out of the competition, causing great disappointment to the Chinese nation, who are planning to use her as an example of how failure will not be tolerated in their ideals. As a result, they are considering not allowing her to compete in next year’s Olympic games, and will be forced to follow the lead of Adee-Gee and consider becoming a Kenyan for Tennis Tipping purposes.

Tomek. now faces Coreyschucky in what is effectively a straight quarter final with the winner making it through to the semi finals and a meeting with Bob, who has won the green group. For the second day in row, Tomek. will be under extreme pressure, especially given his close relationship with Bob that would make the semi final an extremely interesting affair.
Bob’s victory over Ketqtiadv in the green group has shaken that wide open, but his Hungarian teammates win over Scythe19pro means that she goes 0-5 in Masters Cup matches, and is now reduced to watching her boyfriend Ketqtiadv in action (and led one commentator to say that this means the women is back in the background where they belong...). Tomorrow he will take on Qczi in another sudden death match, but does have the experience of past matches to draw on in what will be his biggest match of the year.

The doubles draw is not quite as clear cut, with only Tytta/Virex being secured in the semi finals, while Alansk/Scythe19pro are out, making this a miserable time in China for the Romanian beauty. This leaves Labamba/Linus and Andre/Scarecrows to fight it out for the other semi final spot, which looks to be in the hands of the Albanian/Portuguese after putting in the doubles performance of the round, being the only team to hit a single winner in their matches, creating a sense of suspicion around the tour as to why everyone else sucked as badly as they did. The rumour is that Alessio Di Mauro had bets on everyone involved today except Andre/Scarecrows, which clearly explains their performances...

The red group is the most complicated of them all, as Bavaria100/Kindablue with 2 wins out of 2 can still finish 3rd, while Ria/A_Skywalker who have yet to win can still qualify. Savestheday/Sheva kept their hopes alive with a comeback victory over Ria/A_Skywalker who looked to be cruising to the win at one point, and the wins keeps Savestheday91’s chances of finishing at number 1 alive, but she will need to win her final group match to have any chances of finishing there.

GustavoM_Fan took a huge risk by deciding not to turn up for his match until the match was already over. The organisers kindly allowing his explanation that he was playing on another court to stand, but it didn’t matter as by the time this had take place, his team had already lost the match, proving that very risky tipping doesn’t always work

Yesterday’s predictions, made based on the FIFA world rankings of each players national team showed a vast improvement on day 1’s, getting 4/8 correct. But today we have decided to change the method again to reward hard work on the training ground

Court Red

Greatkingrat (GBR) vs. Linus (CHN)

With Greatkingrat already in the semi finals as a group winner, and Linus already eliminated after 2 defeats, logic would dictate that the rat makes it 3 out of 3 and strolls through the group. But could the fact he has already qualified mean that he takes his eye of the ball and allows Linus to give the Chinese some cheer after a poor tournament for them.

Prediction: Linus finally gets off the mark as Greatkingrat sleeps through this early match as he saves himself for the semi finals

Savestheday91 (SRB)/Sheva (NED) vs. Bavaria100 (GER)/Kindablue (CYP)

A must win match for the number 1 seeds here, while Bavaria and Kindablue know that a loss can still send them through, depending on other results in the group. Savestheday is determined to finish the year at world number 1, and the famous Serbian spirit of taking as many injury timeouts as you need to make sure that your opponent is put off may be brought out in her here as she tries to close the match out. They have already won 1 sudden death match, so know what they need to do to make it 2, and have the understanding between them that is so crucial. Bavaria/Kindablue have looked impressive so far, but this may be 1 match too many for them, especially with Kindablue’s lack of match practice

Prediction: Savestheday91/Sheva show why they are the top ranked team by easing through the match and get 1 foot in the semi finals

GustavoM_Fan (ARG)/Nadie (RUS) vs. Ria (MAL)/A_Skywalker (BUL)

Ria/Skywalker have struggled so far in the competition, while the teamwork between GustavoM_Fan/Nadie isn’t quite there yet, with Gustavo trying to run the team, but not quite knowing what court he should be on. But they do have some form in this competition, and if it wasn’t for some serious bad luck, GustavoM_Fan would have already secured the title (and everyone other title in the history of the game, even before he started playing) so has the belief that he can win.

Prediction: GustavoM_Fan/Nadie force us to get out the calculators by getting the win to produce the 3 way tie

Coreyschucky (USA) vs. Tomek. (POL)

The big match of the day, with the winner going through and the loser going out means that we have a match for big time players here, which is what both of these fighters are, with Corey being the US Open champion, and Tomek. being the French Open champion. Unfortunately one of them won’t be going any further in the tournament, and this is almost too close to call as to who will make it. You have the experience of Corey who has been around for 2 years now, but Tomek.’s youth could favour him, and he is on a high after his win today. Will go to a 3rd set tiebreak...

Prediction: Coreyschucky pulls over the line in a classic match, saving match points on the way to the semi finals

Court Green

Tytta (BRA)/Virex (BRA) vs. Alansk (GBR)/Scythe19pro (ROM)

Tytta and Virex have been complaining about the early start, but the problem is that this is a dead match, with the Brazillians having won the group, and Scythe19pro and the new Ketqtiadv as he was described being out of the tournament. Neither team will fancy the early start, with the match being as pointless as Steve McLaren’s England team, but the 100 ranking points would go nicely for both teams, as well as the pride of winning the match.

Prediction: Tytta/Virex go 100% through the group as they make the effort to get the win, while Alansk/Scythe19pro’s partnership falls apart

Ketqtiadv (BRA) vs. Qczi (HUN)

Again this is a sudden death match, which will favour the man that can handle the pressure the best, and after yesterday’s performance, Qczi has shown that he can dominate opponents in a must win match. But Ketqtiadv will be determined to make up for his beau’s poor showing yesterday and keep alive the relationships chance of winning the title, as well as the number 1 spot. And then there is the head to head record, which shows that Qczi has a poor record against the Brazilian, who is due for some good luck after having a poor match

Prediction: Ketqtiadv to keep to steady and safe and feed off Qczi’s risky tennis tipping and make the semi finals

Aleskz (HUN) vs. Scythe19pro (ROM)

By this time, we predict that Scythe19pro will be on the verge of wanting to allow an alternate to take her place, with 5 losses out of 5, and the fact she will celebrating Ketqtiadv’s qualification for the semi finals. Bob will have already won the group, and will be spending a lot of time trying to concentrate on who his semi final opponent will be, so there isn’t too much interest in this match. Fortunately it clashes with Neighbours, so there will be something for the fans to watch, and there is a consideration that Neighbours will be shown on the hawk-eye screens, with the players having 2 challenges per scene in case they don’t agree with the editorial decisions made... you read the idea here first... you’ll see it on the ATP Disney tour soon...

Prediction: Scythe19pro to finally get her win as she makes better use of her challenges

Labamba (FIN)/Linus (CHN) vs. Andre (POR)/Scarecrows (ALB)

The big match of the day for the home fans, and so it gets main billing in the evening session. Linus and Labamba need to win to keep the Chinese from rioting, to make the semi finals and to keep alive their chance of finishing the year at number 1, Andre/Scarecrows need to win to keep Andre’s tennis tipping career alive, and to take Scarecrows mind of the Albanian tennis championships he is involved in (geez... must be tough... I think even some of our Brits may win a round or 2 before losing). A lot is at stake in this match, which could be a contender for match of the year. But will the expectation get to the players, and how will Linus be feeling after having to play 3 matches than everyone else?

Prediction: Andre/Scarecrows to recover from a first set loss to storm back to a famous win to silence the crowd

Hopefully tomorrow’s tennis tipping will be of a higher quality that the pathetic rubbish that was served up today, and we will get a Wednesday to remember

*Apologies to Mara_M who we yesterday described as Aleskz’s regular doubles partner... she wishes to be known as a life partner instead... we have already got our front-row seats for Tennis Tipping’s first gay wedding*

Monday's Commentary

Day 1’s play of the Tennis Tipping Masters Cup finally finished after yesterday’s invasion by the Chinese wrestling team, and there were a few upsets and turnarounds from the end of Sunday’s play, leading to suggestions of bribery and blackmail, which will be thoroughly investigated by the ATP, before they decide to ban the world number 173 as a statement of intent.

In the singles, there were wins for 3 of the top 4 seeds, with only Qczi failing to claim the win, losing the all Hungarian battle to Aleskz who came through a tough 3 setter, despite claims from his regular doubles partner Mara_M that he totally ignored the suggested plan for the match. In the end Qczi’s risky play came back to haunt him, and ended his slim hopes of ending the year ranked number 1.

Greatkingrat held on to defeat Tomek., who claimed that the match was already lost yesterday and there was nothing that he could do about it today, and Ketqtiadv won the battle with Scythe19pro, telling her that he told her he would win and that he got his strategy right.

But there was bad news for the Chinese fans as Linus was beaten by Coreyschucky (our tip for the title) after being a break up in the final set. She was just 2 games away from recording a famous victory, but choked horribly in the face of the American’s mighty power and threat to declare war on China’s ass, giving Corey the win and reducing the Chinese nation to tears.

The doubles produced more shocks, with 3 of the top 4 teams losing their first matches. The top seeds, Savestheday91/Sheva were looking good against GustavoM_Fan and Nadie, but Gustavo’s cagon tennis tipping and brilliant risky picks came through in the end, giving him a famous victory, which would have been sealed already if it wasn’t for a ‘mistake’ when making picks the previous day. Also in the red group, Kindablue and Bavaria100’s rookie partnership got off a good start when they came from behind to beat Ria and A_Skywalker, giving delight to Kindablue in what could be his last tournament.

The green group produced the most controversy of the day, with Alansk claiming that he lost his and Scythe19pro’s doubles match against Labamba and Linus on the toss of the coin. He claimed it was unfair that match should be decided this way, and was accused by many of the spectators of trying too hard to be GustavoM_Fan. Ketqtiadv, Scythe19pro’s regular doubles partner then stirred up the controversy by claiming that predicting the coin toss is a vital part of the game, and if he doesn’t know what to do with it then he shouldn’t be playing.

Tytta and Virex also came from behind to win, beating Andre and Scarecrows who seemed a bit worse for wear this morning with it being their cheerleader Nathaliia’s birthday today (happy birthday from us), and the impending celebrations clearly took their toll on the team who threw away their advantage from yesterday to leave them struggling to qualify after this early defeat. However, they did show signs of their early confidence, telling Tytta and Virex that they will see them again in the final, so there is clearly no point in the rest of the competition if this final is already predicted.

After a disappointing first round of predictions, let’s hope this method has a bit more success

The predictions...

Court Red

GustavoM_Fan (ARG)/Nadie (RUS) vs. Bavaria100 (GER)/Kindablue (CYP)

Both teams won their opening matches, so both are going into this match high on confidence. Both are rookie teams, so no-one knows how they will handle the pressure of a loss, and how they will deal with the tight situations when their teamwork is really called into question. GustavoM_Fan has set his sights on winning this title since the start of the year, and he has been in good form this week with his risky picking, and that could be the difference

Prediction: GustavoM_Fan/Nadie come out with the win after a tough opening set, but run away with the second

Savestheday91 (SRB)/Sheva (NED) vs. Ria (MAL)/A_Skywalker (BUL)

The loser of this contest could well be out, so this is a really high pressure contest, and will be contested between the world number 1 and number 2. Savestheday91 is the current world number 1, and needs the win here to give her a good chance of ending the year ranked at number 1, and the fact that her partnership with Sheva is a permanent deal should be the crucial factor in this match

Prediction: Savestheday91/Sheva get the win in a easy fashion and keep their chances of winning the title alive

Greatkingrat (GBR) vs. Coreyschucky (USA)

These two have both won their opening matches, so the winner of this contest will have a good chance of making the semi finals with a match to spare. This will turn into a real old fashioned battle between the two old enemies, and the question remains as to whether the relationship in this match will be like that between George W Bush and Tony Blair or not, with Greatkingrat sucking up to Coreyschucky or not. It will be a close run match between the two heavyweights in this group

Prediction: Greatkingrat shows why he is the world number 1 and books his place in the semi finals

Tomek. (POL) vs. Linus (CHN)

Linus will have the crowd behind her in this must win match, and must make the most of her home advantage this time after blowing a lead in her first match. She did however return to form by winning her doubles match, and that confidence should give her a good chance of getting off the mark in the tournament. However Tomek. has the support of the Hungarian community, but feels as if he will be under a huge amount of pressure to get the win here

Prediction: Tomek. to thrive under the pressure and deliver a killer blow to the hopes of Linus winning the title

Court Green

Labamba (FIN)/Linus (CHN) vs. Tytta (BRA)/Virex (BRA)

Both teams will be confident after their opening day wins, and Tytta/Virex are already planning who they will face in the final, so they would expect to come through this match then. Labamba and Linus probably go into this match as favourites, but being a favourite hasn’t been advantageous in the doubles draw so far. Add to the fact that Linus is playing twice as many matches with her in the singles draw, and her need of a win in singles to keep her alive, the fact is her focus may not be totally on this match. The Brazillians appear to be in party mood this week, which may be bad news for the Finnish/Chinese team

Prediction: Tytta/Virex keep the party going by taking Labamba/Linus apart with an easy win

Alansk (GBR)/Scythe19pro (ROM) vs. Andre (POR)/Scarecrows (ALB)

This could be the match of the day, as losing spells probable ELIMINATION. And this will be a match that the fans are split on, with Andre/Scarecrows having the support from the girls, Scythe19pro having the support from the boys (but Ketqtiadv won’t let them get too close to her) and Alansk... well he takes the support of the Brits and the locals who remember his triumph last year. This will be one of the closer matches, with both teams feeling agreived at their opening losses, so the question will be who handles it better?

Prediction: Alansk/Scythe19pro to recover better, and have their focus solely on the match and not Nathaliia’s birthday

Ketqtiadv (BRA) vs. Aleskz (HUN)

Aleksz has been complaining that no-one can spell his name right, and that has caused uproar in the press-box with them saying they can spell his name however they like, and from now on, to avoid confusion, he will be referred to as Bob. And Bob may have got his priorities wrong, as when you are playing the favourite for the title, you need to concentrating solely on the match. Ketqtiadv has the bit between his teeth and wants to end the year as number 1, and has started the tournament very well (and even has time to fly to Helsinki and play in an exhibition match... how much is he being paid for that...), and is looking to make the semi finals here, and a rematch with Scythe19pro in the final

Prediction: Ketqtiadv to continue his run as he beats Bob in a no thrills contest

Scythe19pro (ROM) vs. Qczi (HUN)

The last match of the day will be a crucial one, as Scythe19pro is still looking for her first singles win in Shanghai at the 5th attempt, while Qczi is looking to recover from the despair of losing the battle of Hungary. Scythe19pro has the added pressure of being involved in a must win match in doubles earlier in the day, so needs to come away with something from today’s matches.

Prediction: Scythe19pro to finally get her first win and come through a close 3 setter as she builds on her doubles win from earlier in the day

Sunday’s Commentary

There was bad news emanating from Shanghai on day 1 as none of the matches managed to finish. There was apparently a problem with the courts not being booked for long enough, as midway through the second set of the matches, the Chinese wrestling team stormed onto the courts, saying that they had booked the building for this time, and that was that for the day. All play was cancelled, and will start again tomorrow.

In the action that did happen, all the matches were tight, cagey affairs with no-one wanting to make many unforced errors that could cost them. GustavoM_Fan was predictably the one who planned to take the risks, but as he tried to execute them, he made a terrible mistake and ended up playing safe instead, and then complained about how he is being discriminated against, before getting into another argument with FiBeR just for the hell of it.

Amazingly enough, in both singles and doubles the higher seeds have slight leads with Greatkingrat, Ketqtiadv, Coreyschukcy and Qczi leading their respective singles matches, while the top 4 seeds in doubles also have a slight lead. Whether they can all hold on to record wins tomorrow, or whether some of the underdogs can come back to get the win is the big question.

Without any completed matches, there is not a lot that can be reported upon today, and all was quiet in the players zone as well, with Nadie considering joining her hero Adee-Gee in defecting to Belarus and Tomek. complaining that he didn’t do a Sharapova and get coached on the court and listen to the coach’s advice midway through a match.

Join us tomorrow for the results of the opening round of matches, previews of the second matches, and the latest rumours from Shanghai...

Saturday’s Commentary

It’s been very quiet here in Shanghai today, with most of the major contenders not wanting to speak to the media or do any public training, confirming the fact that they are all in deep training for Masters Cup. In fact, the only person really to comment was Tomek., who felt a little scared at having to start against Greatkingrat, who responded by saying he felt he could qualify whoever was in his group, and stated that the WADA rules didn’t apply to him (and he’s in China, so they wouldn’t be recognised by the athletes anyway…)

Onto the predictions then...

Court Red

Coreyschucky vs. Linus

It’s the hometown girl vs. the all American boy in what should be a thrilling clash of styles. Linus will have all the support from the crowd as she bids to win the Masters Cup in front of her countrymen, and she has been chosen to open the event to get the tournament off to a exciting start. Corey, the reigning US Open champion has had the better season, but the Chinese will not want to show themselves badly to the world, especially against an American opponent. The power of communism will come to the fore here, and it has been rumoured that Linus has been meeting with the Russians to learn how best to poison players…

Prediction: Linus to open the tournament with a crushing victory

Greatkingrat vs. Tomek.

The world number 1 and Wimbledon champion against the man who finished 8th in the race, knocking fan favourite Adee-Gee out by the thinnest of margins. The crowd were disappointed to see Adee not make it here, and the pressure of being the man who caused the Scot-Belarussian not to make it could weigh heavily on his shoulders. But the rat has been out of form since his stunning return to the tour earlier this year, and may feel under pressure with the curse of the world number 1 above him

Prediction: Tomek. to come through a nervy encounter and open with a win

Savestheday91/Sheva vs. GustavoM_Fan/Nadie

The French Open champions take on the rookie team of Argentines and Russians, who only joined together a few days before the competition (rumoured to be to swap notes on fixing/doping), so this should be a 1 sided match, especially as you consider Savestheday91 is the world number 1 in doubles. But it may not that easy, especially if you consider that Nadie has her fan club with her, and Gustavo is on a crusade to prove he deserves to be in the competition. Both teams have claimed they are going to walk through the group, but one of them will get off to a bad start

Prediction: Savestheday91/Sheva’s experience gets them off to a winning start

Ria/A_Skywalker vs. Bavaria100/Kindablue

Two teams who haven’t competed together on the main stage meet in the final match of the day, and it will be a race to see which team manages to gel together the fastest. Kindablue is also coming out of retirement, so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts from the clubs of Aiya Napa to the courts of Shanghai, while A_Skywalker is involved in a close race to end the year ranked world number 1

Prediction: Ria/A_Skywalker gel together well and cruise to a simple win

Court Green

Ketqtqiadv vs. Scythe19pro

The most intriguing match of the day – doubles partner, lovers, and now opponents. The question is how will they manage to keep their emotions in check. Will dispusted calls be resolved by them kissing and making up? Will they be holding hands at the changeovers? Will they play gently in fear of hurting the others feelings? Will they battle hard to prove who wears the trousers in the household? Ketqtiadv needs the win to improve his chances of finishing the year ranked number 1, but could he do the honourable thing and let his girl win?

Prediction: Ketqtiadv to get over the line in a tight, low quality contest

Andre/Scarecrows vs. Tytta/Virex

This could be one of the hottest match in tennis tipping history, and not just for the quality of tennis, but also for the players and their respective spectators. Tytta and Virex will have the hopes of Brazil behind them, but they are up against Andre and Scarecrows, described by resident fan-girl Nathaliia as the hottest team around. She has confirmed that she will be their number 1 groupie, and has been given front-row tickets by the organisers to cheer her team on (and possibly will be there in cheerleader outfit…)

Prediction: Andre/Scarecrows to dash the hopes of Brazil by getting the win

Qczi vs. Aleskz

Hungary is divided as its two most famous tennis players collide. Aleskz won the Australian Open, Qczi hasn’t stated his achievements, but finished the year ranked higher and has an outside chance of finishing the year at number 1. The match has been described as the Hungarian championships… the winner eats 100 ranking points, and the loser goes hungry…

Prediction: Qczi to get his teeth into a close match, before feeding on Aleskz errors to take it in a 3 sets

Labamba/Linus vs. Alansk/Scythe19pro

This will be the second match of the day for both Linus and Scythe19pro, so a lot will depend on how tired they are from their opening singles matches, and how they have got on in those matches. Labamba/Linus are the regular doubles team, have the support of the crowd behind them, and are a lot of people’s favourites to win the title. But Alansk has great memories of Shanghai, winning the singles title here last year, and his blossoming relationship with Scythe19pro could propel them onto a big start to the competition.

Prediction: Labamba/Linus to use the crowd to their advantage and crush their opponents

*The prediction's have been made by a highly complex and advanced method. Each round of matches will be predicted by a different method, and then at the end of the competition, the method's will be compared to see which was the most accurate. The method used for these matches will be revealed at the conclusion of the match day 1... points will be awarded to anyone who can guess how it was done each time*

Friday's Commentary

The draws for the Tennis Tipping 2007 Masters Cup (sponsored by Alessio Di Mauro’s bookie) have been, but have just led to widespread tension among the players, none of whom appear to be happy with the draw that they have received. In fact, there have even been racist accusations thrown at the organisers of the tournament, and they thinking about calling in the ATP investigators to ensure that this isn’t taken onto the court.

The first player to arrive in Shanghai was the Juan Ignacio Chela fan, Ketqtiadv, who will be looking for his 6th title of the year and to end the year as the world number 1. He immediately was involved in a small dispute with last years champion Alansk, resulting from the fact that he will be playing doubles with Scythe19pro here, and has taken his place as her doubles partner. (and rumours are that Alansk wants to take his place in another way as well…)

Everyone else seemed to arrive in fine form, with Andre and Kindablue coming out of retirement for this tournament, although Kindablue, who won this event last year with Alekutza, appeared to be on a separate planet to everyone else, stating he would play with her again without actually realising she had failed to qualify. In the end, the only player left out was GustavoM_Fan, rejected by everyone else and so ends up playing with Nadie, who has brought along her fan club with her to try and cheer her on to victory here (and undoubtedly will be the object of Gustavo’s anger if they fail to win the tournament, along with the SR defeat that he suffered)

Once the draws were made in an elaborate ceremony, the complaints started to flow from those involved. Scythe19pro broke into tears after realising that she was in the same group as Keqtqiadv, who almost exploded at hearing the news… especially as Tomek. decided to have a good old fashioned laugh at the news. Labamba’s first reaction was to go straight to his database of H2H’s in an attempt to intimidate the rest of the competitors, while GustavoM_Fan unsurprisingly claimed he was in an easy group. Mara_M, who isn’t competed here waded in claiming that Forever-Delayed was racist against romanian ,hungarian and pseudo romanian/hungarian people, while Savestheday91 was over the moon at being in the red group.

One of the only people yet to make a public comment on their group is Greatkingrat, the current tennis tipping number 1, and the only person ever to win 2 Grand Slam titles. After a stunning start to his career, winning the Australian Open on debut, all went quiet from him, and he disappeared from the tour midway through last summer, before returning to unsuccessfully defend his Aussie Open title. After that though he hit form, which culminated with him winning Wimbledon in front of his home crowd, but since then all has gone a bit quiet from him, and he failed to show up at the Paris Masters event, which happened to coincide with the WADA unit showing up to test all the players. This has fuelled rumours that he was actually on drugs at the start of the year, and the reason his form has dipped is because the drugs have worn off.

The play begins on Sunday, and there will be a full preview of the opening days matches posted the day beforehand, along with the predicted results from our top-secret, as yet unrevealed match predicter….

I used the combined race points to determine it... and this is the problem of it not being a doubles race... you don't know what method to use (unless I miscalculated...)

Which method should we use to solve possible ties after the RR stage?

1. Head-to-head results if only two players are tied,

if three players are tied, then:

2. most correct picks
3. most correct SR's
4. most PTS points

If 2., 3. or 4. produce one superior player (first place), or one inferior player
(third place), and the two remaining players are tied, the tie between those two players shall be broken by head-to-head record.

Sounds ok?

Friday's Commentary

If you check the WADA rules, they only apply to humans, not rats :p

I have carefully planned my strategy and I think I can qualify whoever is in my group :rocker2:

The first player to arrive in Shanghai was the Juan Ignacio Chela fan, Ketqtiadv, who will be looking for his 6th title of the year and to end the year as the world number 1. He immediately was involved in a small dispute with last years champion Alansk, resulting from the fact that he will be playing doubles with Scythe19pro here, and has taken his place as her doubles partner. (and rumours are that Alansk wants to take his place in another way as well…)
