in a best of 3 sets match, and for comparasion how many players lost?

Something different but I think also interesting... I'd been studying all Grand Slam results from the Open Era in the past and I've found only one match in which the winner lost two sets in a row 0-6. It was at Roland Garros '69: Stanley Mathews def. Ilie Nastase 6-3 0-6 0-6 6-4 8-6 (1st round).

Borg was a master of this, but mostly in best of 5. I think he lost 4 or 5 other times when he lost the first set 0-6 n best of 3.

Not only is it coming back from winning just a game in two sets but also numerically nice (sets won to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4).

Lots of other interesting results such as 0-6 6-1 6-0 and 0-6 7-6 7-6 also.

Only twice has a player lost the first set 0-6 and come back to win in a five set final. Barcelona '85 and the famous RG final between Coria and Gaudio.

The result (I checked results of ATP tournements from 2007):
Best of 3 - 5 wins and 52 losses after 0:6 (and only 4 of them in 3 sets). That's about 9%.
Best of 5 - 2 wins (1 in 4 sets and 1 in 5 sets) and 12 losses (7 in 3 sets, 5 in 4 sets and not even one in 5 sets). That's about 14%.
Overall 7 wins and 64 and that's about 10%.


In 2008 so far:
Best of 3 - 9 losses (all in straight sets).
Best of 5 - 9 losses (8 in straight sets and 1 in 4 sets).
Amazingly, no-one has return from 0-6 to win the match in 2008.

In that scenario 2515 matches were lost (95 retirements included) and 297 matches were won (10 retirements included).

But seriously, the familiar name is not a coincidence: he was the son of the famous footballer, and the last British male to win Wimbledon Juniors - that was in 1962. But this match was the highlight of his pro career.
