Swedish captain fears home crowd in Davis Cup tie
By The Associated Press

Sweden captain Mats Wilander is expecting a vocal crowd this weekend when his team faces Israel in the first round of the Davis Cup.

Last weekend, the fans at the Ramat Hasharon Tennis Center briefly got to Maria Sharapova by imitating her grunting. Sharapova still won her Fed Cup debut match, however, and Russia eventually beat Israel to reach the semifinals.

"They raise their game when they are playing in front of their crowd," Wilander said yesterday. "I think all five matches can be won or lost. I think the score could be 5-0 or 0-5 or 3-2."

The best-of-five series starts with Friday's singles. The doubles will be played Saturday, and the reverse singles are set for Sunday.

Israel's team includes Dudi Sela, Harel Levy, Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich, while Sweden will be represented by 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johannson, Jonas Bjorkman, Simon Aspelin and Filip Prpic.

"I think our players know that they are considered both as underdogs and also as favorites," Israel captain Eyal Ran said.

"This is going to be a very difficult tie. We are going to do the maximum we can to win, and I hope the players will be on top of their games."

Israel reached the World Group by beating Chile in last year's playoffs.

"Of course we know the Israeli team is very strong after beating Chile and I also know it's a big two weeks for Israeli tennis with the Fed Cup," Wilander said. "So I know everyone is very excited, which is good for them, I guess. But we have a very experienced team, and we have been in this situation before."

Sweden has won seven Davis Cup titles, the last in 1998.

Israel have a pretty strong team - especially in the doubles. Not that Jonas isn't great, but he hasn't had a lot of success playing doubles with the other swedish players :(

I hope the crowd won't be that mad as it was during Russia-Israel Fed Cup :tape:

Unfortunately I will be on a fair from tomorrow to saturday, so I can´t follow the first DC days :( But I really hope that Sweden is already in the lead when I get back :) :worship:

Reuters Article (http://uk.reuters.com/article/tennisNews/idUKL1046939620080210?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0)

In Tel Aviv, Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman shed his tag as simply a doubles specialist when he overcame a nightmare start to stifle Israeli hopes with a 0-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 win over Harel Levy.

Bjorkman's win gave Sweden a 3-2 win and secured the seven-times winners a quarter-final trip to Argentina.

'GOOD REFLEXES'

In the only world group contest to go into a live fifth rubber, Bjorkman was made to feel all of his 35 years as he watched the first set flash by in a blur.

But it was not long before he remembered his own mantra.

"I'm fitter than ever, I have been changing diapers really well so my reflexes are very good," Bjorkman, who became a father for the second time last month, said before the tie.

Those skills proved to be handy in the second set when he started to chip and charge to the net and kept the points short with his serve-and-volley tactics against Levy.

"I started off pretty badly, I felt that it couldn't get much worse... but in a five-setter you always have the chance to get back into the match," Bjorkman said on Sunday.:rolls:

Reuters (http://uk.reuters.com/article/UK_TENNIS/idUKL0156881420080401) article

STOCKHOLM, April 1 (Reuters) - Sweden captain Mats Wilander on Tuesday named his squad for this month's Davis Cup quarter-final tie against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

He has called up Jonas Bjorkman, Thomas Johansson, Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt while doubles specialist Simon Aspelin was included as a reserve, the Swedish tennis federation announced on their Web site (www.tennis.se).

Johansson and Soderling are expected to play in the singles while Bjorkman is likely to team up with Lindstedt in the doubles for the tie to be played from April 11-13.

nothing against robert lindstedt - hes awesome, but why the hell does he get picked over simon? simon's a grand slam winner!!

Kristen

There's nothing I can say that makes sense...
-Simon is too old, time for someone else [Jonas and Thomas are ancient]
-Robert is more aesthetically pleasing [Simon is gorgeous - superficial I know]
-Results [Both guys have had their fair share of crappy results this year. Maybe the blend of Robert or Simon with Jonas? That one might make some sense...probably as it's the only tennis related one...but I don't know enough about their history with JB]. Maybe because it's Argentina, on clay, who cares 'cause they're going down ["down in an earlier round...sugar we're going down swimming..."]. [/Fallout Boy lyrics]

But, Mats has done pretty well in the past. Remember Adelaide 2004? Best tennis memory ever :yeah:. I'm sure we'll find out in time. I want to see this tie but we'll probably be subjected to Australia vs Thailand. Gosh, how exciting! :p

Ahh Good times...
"OH MY GOD it's PETRA!" lol and the ice cream handshake...and the 'not hearing my phone whilst i pass the time til my plane leaves' incident. Argh! I have never done anything so quickly in my life, than get a taxi to the hotel, get the bag and speed off to the airport. Meh. I didn't get any Bjorkmans, or even a Soderling on my plane, but Enqvist was a fine consolation prize. ^_^ I want another 2004. Minus the heatwave, but with more Fasta Pasta. [and a larger flag out the window]

...but, you know who Nalbandian is, right? I don't know how much good Magnus could do to help ToJo in that situation. I was so excited when I saw on the news that Sweden were 1-1! Of course, stupid Fox didn't say which Swede had won the match. Very happy with Robin, even if people are saying Jose played poorly :D You can only play as good as your opponent lets you :p :D

Argentina's David Nalbandian and Guillermo Canas have clinched the doubles rubber with a 75 64 64 defeat of Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman and Robert Lindstedt in two hours and 17 minutes.

Can Robin be a hero and beat Nalbandian? and then can coaching help tojo beat acasuso too?
wishful thinking....

Swedes to Play for Championship

Sweden booked its spot in the title match at the 31st edition of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship, winning both singles match against the U.S. on Thursday at the Rochusclub to ensure a top finish in the Red Group standings.

Robin Soderling came back from a loss of a set to dismiss World No. 8 James Blake, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, and Thomas Johansson followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over American Bobby Reynolds.

Blake appeared to be in good standing after breaking Soderling to secure the first set in 43 minutes, but the Swede needed 49 minutes to take the next two sets. Blake managed to win just seven points total in the final set, including one on serve.

“It wasn’t my best tennis out there,” said Blake. “He started playing great. I didn’t stick to my plan that was working in the first set. It can get away quick against a play like that I would have liked to have done a little better today and given us a chance to still be in the finals on Saturday. But I took my chances, it didn't happen.”

Johansson, a former Australian Open champion, then clinched Sweden’s return to the final as he took one hour and 40 minutes to dismiss Reynolds in the American’s Rochusclub singles debut.

Sweden will play for the ARAG ATP World Team Championship title for the sixth time, with a chance to tie four-time champions Germany, USA and Spain as the title leaders. Sweden won in 1988 (d. USA, 2-1), 1991 (d. Yugoslavia, 2-1) and 1995 (d. Croatia, 2-1), and finished as runners-up in 1986 (l. to France) and 1999 (l. to Australia).

The U.S. was attempting to reach the final for the first time since winning its last of four titles in 1993.

That bagel against Blake made me so happy. Blake, really, should be one of my favourites. A smart guy, nice, seems so lovely. For some reason I cheer for Robin in this match

lol, he just gives off the impression to me that he is. He's always written about as the poor but determined kid with the crooked back, who came good. Of course, he frustrates me when I have to watch him. I just wish I could figure out why I pretty much never want him to win.:tape:
