This is all very confusing, on rgnet, Francis Gasquet is quoted, with possibly asking a WC for Metz, but he does not mention Vienna.

I prefer the official lists to Papa's gossip for selfish reasons. ;) But I think everything will depend on the previosu performances, US Open and Mumbai, too early to speculate about that.

I can't stand that when they ask for a WC although they could have entered the event.
There are so many Frenchies who would love to get those WC for Metz...

No need to get embarrassed, Richard will be tired after Mumbai, he won't play Metz (so Edouard can get the WC ;)) and then he will relax, come to Vienna and win the tournament beating Ljubicic in the final. :haha:

:secret: I am sick of Ljubicic winning Vienna.

The wild card stories were already posted here, it's not new to me either. But the only thing we know so far is that he hasn't entered Metz, so I would have at least put a question mark for this event. Being so well informed, you surely know what was said in France about him not playing Metz and Lyon this year.

But I guess he will change his plans now after having missed the USO and he will probably try to play as much as possible, ask for WC and enter all the remaining events.

Gasquet has the game to beat Blake quite easily, however, I think even Ancic has the potential to beat Blake, as he is finding some form right now. Wouldn't be surprised to see Gasquet play Ancic (and beat him), then meet Djoko in the QF. Just a hunch, but lets see.

Whoa - a little harsh there. I'm sure he is crushed. The last few games he looked REALLY, REALLY pissed, as he should have been. UP 40-15 after breaking back to even the second set and hits 4 unforced forehand errors to get broken again :banghead: :smash:

He and Berdych (and maybe Baggy) are fast becoming the lost hopes of the new "baby balls" generation. Meanwhile Nadal, the Joker and even the whinner, Murray are taking the "young guns/baby balls" title which KILLS me cuz I really don't like the 3 of those and really do like 2 of the 3 lost hopes.

He has had high expectations riding on him for years, seems he should be learning to deal with it. Still love him to death  but I am beginning to face the fact that Richie might not be able to break through despite his enormous talent. Still haven't given up yet but ...

Maybe he is just saving up for LYON and Paris and will make a dramatic showing in his home to capture the last spot.

Obviously not. Until/unless that changes I'm afraid he will not see the Top 10. And the weird thing is that he does well when he plays agressively. His volley and overhead are good and when he hits a flat forehand it can actually be quite good too. YOu know today, his best shot was a drop shot! He had 6 or 7 drop shot winners - how aggressive.

How bad will Richie crumble if he is still in the running for Shanghai in Paris?

The weird thing is that this is a very likely scenario. Many of his competitors did not fare better. Blake, Haas, Moya, Berdych, and Ljubicic just lost the first set.

I was really confident that he would go past PHM easily. But after the first ralleys, it was obvious how tense he was, thus the passive play again. He did more in the second set, but still only occasionally and it was just not good and/or consistent enough. I wonder where the BH down the line was today and the second serve return was a pain, particularly on the BH side.

If one thing pleased me today, it was the clear sign that he was pissed off. That defeat hurt and it should. Time to regroup and start a new. It is still possible.

Do you think Richard will play Lyon? Or are the potential points too few to risk getting "wron out". It's ashame that getting worn out playing 2 weeks would be a concern for a professional tennis player.

Robredo making TMC again is really disgraceful. I sincerely hope Del Potro wins.
Most of seeds who are capable of making Shanghai have fallen off. Their opponents probably are green out of envy because they can't. I'd thought Richard wouldn't have been one of them. How stupid I was

BTW when I was watching Richard's game, I realized he didn't much change. It was just the same he has been playing. I hope him to be agressive even if he's making lots of UEs. Today sometimes he hit aggressive shots when there's nothing to lose for him, which was better than watching the logo 'Madrid'.

I don't know what to think. In the French forum of rg.net, somebody heard an interview, in which Richard mentions blisters (again?) and knee problems.

I could not see anything in his movement, though.

If it is true, those blisters are worrying me. Can this be a psychological reaction? He always seems to get them before important matches.

Well Paris will be fun. Robredo went down too! Gonzo is the only contender who added any points in Mardid. Looks like one spot (I think Gonzo will make it) for Haas, Blake, Richard, Berdych, Robredo, Moya and maybe Lubo to fight it out. Then with the way things are going guess there is the chance someone else comes from nowhere to do really well in Madrid and Paris (Paulo ? - What's the chance?).

Richard defeats C. Rochus 7-6 6-3, hitting 23  aces.

Nevertheless, the beginning was tough. Rochus did not play poorly and Richard was tense. Rochus gifted him the TB with a DF. More aggression by Richard in the second set, he had many break chances at 2-2, but did not convert them. But instead of getting frustrated, he won his own serve easily and was inspired in Rochus' next service game, breaking him to love, hitting some glorious BH winners on the way. The rest was a formality, with Richard breaking Rochus once more.

Well if he keeps losing like that, seeding won't matter.
Actually I'm not disappointed by today's play of his because Tsonga played really well. I've never seen Tsonga keep his levels up until the match was finished.
And Richard didn't play far behind the baseline. Well his forehand was also good. What's wrong with that then? Well.. he should've fought more than he used to or changed the tactics (really he couldn't do anything about Tsonga's playing at the net) even though Tsonga was rock solid.
And that attitude, he said in interview that he wouldn't have won in the next round and he should've got into the SF to qualify for Shanghai.

I don't know.. I'm just frustrated by his result yet again. I guess my hope for Gasquet should be set up like towards Nalbandian's.

It seems Richard really stimulates the other french players lately. :tape:

I only saw the end of first set and the second. It was a very good match with great winners. Richard didn't play badly. Tsonga was just better today. Deserved win.

I am not disappointed cos I don't care about Shangai. All I want to see is Richard doing well and going far at Bercy... at least further than the previous years.. (ie the quarters) But he will never do it with the weight of this qualification in his mind. So lets forget about it and hopefully without the pressure, Richard will take pleasure in playing. Lets hope he will have a good draw too.

As for the ranking, I may be too positive at times, but despite this loss and last weeks, I really can't see any other french players better ranked than him. Richard is the less inconsistent of them all. :tape:

I didn't see any of the match and only saw the last 3 games on a messed up scoreboard. How did he play? If it was agressive and not that defensive mess, then at least he was trying to do what he has to do.

And what was he talking about in the interview - not winning the next round - was his knee too bad??

I think I'll have to drop my expectations (as my0118 says) and approach his matches as I do my other favorite, Nalbandian -- don't ever expect anything, even after good match or two or even a good tournament and anything will be a pleasant surprise.

Don't have much hope for Richie to make Shanghai but it will REALLY REALLY KILL ME if Murray makes it to Shanghai.

Firstly he didn't play bad at all. Just one break in the first set punished him. And in the second, I guess the pressure let him down and get broken. Aside from those, from what I saw, he held his serves quite well. But the problem was he couldn't do much anything on Tsonga's serves. He didn't even get a single break point. Tsonga played really well especially doing volleys.

And I read what he had said during interview on GM. He said his elbows bothered him (but I don't know.. I thought his served quite well) and it looked like he's not totally unsatisfied with the result because he also said he could've lost in the next round even if he had won against Tsonga. And I think he thought he must work hard to qualify for Shanghai...

I don't think Murray will qualify imho. Berdych will be more capable of making it. However, for me, I'm disappointed not because I do so much care about Shanghai (of course it would be great if he made it and winning is not totally unrelated to qualifying for TMC), but because I'm worried that he will have no progress next year as well.. like this year. It seems he doesn't believe in himself. I'm usually annoyed by players consistency without big weapons, but Richard is too vulnerable.

Yeah I should not expect too much from him. I'll have to be satisfied with one or two big wins or a small title, accepting the fact that he is no fighter.

The problem with Richard imo is that although his best>>>everyone else's best (bar Federer) his worst is worser than many else's worst. Another way to put it: When he plays great he can beat almost anyone, but he seems to have trouble beating people when he is playing poorly. Djokovic and Nadal can beat people playing on their average level. That's why they are champions.

my0118
10-26-2007, 03:08 AM
I think he could even push Federer when he's on fire... He's one of the rare players who can outhit Federer imo. I think the reason he can't beat someone when he's playing poorly or his opponent is on fire is he doesn't fight enough to beat.

Exactly Mia. It's not that he doesn't have the weapons. But when he is playing poorly (or his opponent is on fire) he starts to lose confidence and give up. Nadal and Djoke even when they are playing average, they still have that belief and never give up on points. If Gasquet increases his confidence, he can still win at 60% if he wanted. Same with Safin. When he is playing great he can beat Federer. But when he sucks, he really sucks.

Amazing passing shot just now. Great shots from both players. Gasquet has great eyes. He wins almost all of his challenges. Also shows how great the umpire is.

Served out the set at LOVE!!!

Now put the screws the Tsonga who started to pile up the UE at the end. Did you see the 1st set stats? Richie had 7 UE and only 6 winners but they were at just the right time. KEEP fighting Richie, and keep the pressure on Tsonga who could fold with a little more!!!

This match is really good. At first I thought Gasquet would just give up but he fought back nicely and hit some good winners. :worship:

Yes I'm really satisfied because he's really being agressive and defensive right on time. That's the way the match whould go when he's doing!!

The commentator said during Murray's match he's doing really well when he's agressive, but sometimes he's too passive. I think this is the same for Gasuqet.

He should keep doing for that.
He should keep agressive, defensive when he has to and keep fighting even the things don't go to his way! And most of all, Got to be confident!

:woohoo: :woohoo: WHEW!! 7-5, 7-6! Great tie break from RIchard. He really did want this one.

Saw him throw his sweatband into the crowd at the end - next time how about a little Nole action and try the shirt. Most impressive thing about the match today was that he kept fighting till the end even though he wasn't at his best (winners and unforced errors were exactly the same number) he played the big points well. And he played SMART - AGGRESSIVE (Yes, I said aggressive) and defensive at the right times. GOOD JOB RICHIE!!

Yes he hadn't passed Tsonga last week. But he's doing some, great.

The Lyon court was super-fast. Bercy is usually on fast carpet but they changed it to hardcourts that can take spin well thanks to Fed and Nadal.

I see you caught me red handed on the "who will win Paris" thread!

Please Richard. I have a simple request: you win Paris TMS beating Federer and whoever is on the other side of the draw. Pretty please!

(Dont tell our RF.com friends! ;) Not that I am not cheering for Roger, but if Richou meets Fed at Paris, I wont be sad if Gasquet wins it)

Just loved when Richard got really angry after first break in first set. I really believed from then on, he was not going to let go of this match. From then on, he really was "Poetry in Motion". Don't care what people have to say about Richard's forehand, his backhand is magnificent. He showed true fighting spirit ... Keep it up ...

hehe thanx Schu! how is he playing? still playing miles behind the baseline? how is his forehand??

Up until 2 games ago - he was playing very well once he got in the grove - yes, he's been pretty far behind the baseline but not quite as far as he can be and is coming in with pretty good success. Forehand has some great shots and some bad misses. Looked like he was about to take off but then he had a lapse and its getting hairy...

this game is so crucial. he must hold this game, then got to regroup.
