Served for the match in the 4th and should have been break up in the third, stupid call from the line judge.

Can Gonzalez actually win a match?

Brilliant passing shots by Gabashvili in the end, although Gonzalez was horrible tactically (again).

Gonzo going out of this tourny early is obviously not a huge surprise given his current poor form, but even I didn't think it would happen today

"Bad Start Feña" then quite decent play to the end of the match ;) Congrats to Gaba - 4th set was a choke but in the 5th he was solid from start to the end.

I thought Gabashvili was going to sink when he pulled 3 double faults almost in succession while serving for it on the 4th set, but clearly I didn't know him enough. The guy was so much more insane than last time I watched him, it fits him.

this was enorm good play from Gabashvili for lot of time and very good that he annoyed Gonzo with some things as Gonzo did to him and as the rude Chile crowd around the court did to him. Gaba has some good shot today :worship:

Great that some of the bad Chile-Chile-Chile-Viva Chile jerks went home with the loss in the bag because disturbing players in serve and shots by clapping or using flash photo must get punishment

Well done to Gabashvili. I thought he had blown it after his atrocious game while serving for the match in the 4th set.
Gonzo has lost in the 1st round of his last 4 tournaments, and has posted a 2-3 win-loss record in his last 3 grand slams. He is in dreadful form, and with a bucket load of ranking points of defend at Vienna, Madrid, Basel, things look grim for him. His backhand slice has been truly horrendous in recent times.

Nice to see Gabashvili recover after double-faulting 3 times while serving for the match in the 4th set.
Funnily enough this match was actually shorter than Nalbandian's straight sets win over Navarro-Pastor.

was one of best I sawed Gabashvili, good pression game from all court and not surprise you also do errors when going for such shots

choke when serving for match was bad, sometimes it can loose you the match, but he later played best return game and that was more important.
and true: Gonzo was not 100%, if Gonzo is 100% then Gabashvili could play 300% and not win it

Gonzo's problems

1) Court position - why was he moonlighting as a line judge. You cannot be that aggressive playing from the front row of the crowd.

2) Backhand slice. It is SO slow, ponderous and predictable. It goes crosscourt, floaty, with no bite whatsoever, and lands plumply to be hit with a good crack

3) Predictability. His patterns of play are so well-known - from one of the most unpredictable players on tour he has become absurdly easy to pick what he's going to do.

4) Confidence. It's all gone south since Australia. It's like Stefanki has taken his natural talents, tamed them a little to add consistency, but has tamed them now too much and has forced him to become this defensive, milk and water baseliner, almost afraid to unleash and take a huge crack. Stefanki's early influence seemed positive but the longer it's gone on, the less brilliant his input seems.

Well, apologize I must, for on second reading you're mostly right (enorm good play?? Gabashvili played crappy tenis almost all the match, but Gonzalez was even worse. The choke of the Russian in the 4th set was out of this world ...). Couple of others I won't bother linking to for they are just insults/whines. But my point remains, Gonzalez loses and it's no big whoop, Nadal struggles with injuries and rust and it's time for the vultures to feast.

Cheers and apologies all the same.

What was the point of bringing Nadal in this thread? I've hardly seen any excuses about Gonzo, it's mostly been about how great Gabashvili was. If anything people were saying he should have won easier.

he can hit few serves at that speed even a little more faster but not very consistent like Karlovic, Isner and Roddick
and he looks for to have a high first serve percentage, so those are the reasons he serves of that way

Well of course no one expects him to be serving in the 130s consistently but i think he would be better of going for more on his 1st

I would rather you hit the felt off every ball if it meant you'd at least win some matches. This slice business isn't doing any good now. When they just sit up like his do recently, he might as well just hit topspin backhands instead.

WTF was that ???? I mean I know Gonzo was in slump, but I couldn't believe it as I saw him this year only in AO and Rome, where he was at his best. Completely stupid tennis, kindergarten of tactics. In the last game Gabashvili played superb passing shots, but Gonzalez played some 15 balls to Gaba's forehand in this last game as if he didn't know that Russian was smacking the forehand throughout the whole match. This backhand slice is awful, the service is awful. If not Gabashvili's antics, which were hillarious (taking to himself all the time, talking to public, kicking the balls, kicking the racket, falling on the ground) - this would be the painful match to watch.
