(7) in the third set breaker, bit of a scare in sets 2 and 3 but surprisingly came through pretty calmly.

For me, this is his best match of the year. His serve was working very well.

Forehand was working good most of the time but sometimes got in position for the winner and was too eratic.

Let cords working against Safin WHOLE match.

Keep rolling big man :yeah: I'm a proud fan today.

Dancevic shitted more on his pants today than I did when I was a baby...

That serve at 6-5 in the TB of the 3rd set was the most expected serve I've seen in months.

Amazing how people think Frank will be a Top 30 player. Safin is barely a Top 30 player and Dancevic couldn't win a freaking set against him.

Keep taking credit away from Safin, but he is the guy who is through to the next round.

Safin played well today. Dancevic will be pissed off that he lost in straight sets when he had opportunities in the 2nd and 3rd sets. He was too passive and tentative for the most part today.
Safin's serving and groundstrokes were in very good order.

Safin is capable of doing that pass with one arm behind his back.

The main point was that Dancevic choked and he choked badly. He was capable of making Gasquet look aggressive in some points of the match...

Frank played a very good match (except any part that had to do with set points or break points)
Safin's serve was clicking, his groundstrokes spot on for the most part, his forehand picked up halfway through the first set. An encouraging first round performance from him, but still no expectations. It's still Marat afterall...

As others have noted, the keys to this match were Dancevic not capitalizing on key opportunities - specifically serving out two sets - and Safin maintaining his composure throughout the match and playing more solidly than he has of late. As someone who bet vCash on Frank but certainly doesn't claim to be a 'respected gambler' (isn't that an oxymoron anyway?), I was counting more on the Russian crumbling the way he did against Nadal in Montréal than the Canadian comprehensively beating him.

Actually, I've been quite fond of Safin ever since USO 2000 when I simply knew he was going to beat Sampras in the final. He's obviously had other great moments since then, like his AO 05 win, but I admit my faith in him ever recapturing anything close to consistent, decent form faded earlier this year and my expectations since have dipped accordingly. That said, I would be more than pleasantly surprised to see Marat regain some of that old lost magic and really give his fans something to cheer about this tournament.

Marat hit his serve better today than he has in a while. Huge out wide on the AD side and good angle on the one out wide on the deuce court. His FH DTL was working relatively well today (compared to most of his other matches this year) and although he made his usual mistakes with it, he hit some penetrating shots as well. Frankie hit way too much to the Safin BH and Safin controlled a lot of points because of it. I thought Frankie would come out with more a gameplan than that, but he learn from this experience.

She was with me in Cincinnati for one day and we watched Marat practice. She was not impressed with him for that exact reason, he got mad once and threw the racket at the back fence. I think she must have forgotten about that by now, or not realized it's the same guy.

I'm sure you noticed the change in toss style for his serve, when he used to toss it up, back in 2000, he kind of took it on the rise, but now he throws it higher and lets it drop a little, why did he change?

Yes, Safin's second serve today did give Dancevic chances, he made it a bit predictable, but I can also say the same about Frank going to Safin's forehand nearly all of the time.

Not a good match, Frank did not play his (recent) best and failed at the important points. Marat's slam experience proved decisive here.
