Verdasco outbreaks Mathieu 3-6 1-6 6-4 6-3 6-3 (or maybe the SB was wrong)

So many breaks. :help:

I guess Verdasco deserves plaudits for fighting back so well done to him. Very disappointing from Mathieu and to be honest from the SB it looks like the level can't have been high, certainly not as far as serving goes.

I only followed this on the scoreboard, but it appeared to have about 20 breaks of serve.

Pretty crappy from both though judging by the horrible serving.

PHM should have got a Tuesday start. I hope he rests up and remains fit for the indoor season now.

Verdasco lost serve in the 5th set three times and won comfortable 6-3  His first five-set win after two sets down. Mathieu aggravates 5-set-record to 2-7.

Verdasco should beat Simon and then a potential match with Berdych looms.

:(! Such a tough loss for PHM! I really wanted him to go far in this USO! Well, Really bad, wish him luck in the future anyways.

I think they didn't broke each other thaaat much, it may be a problem with the sb. unless someone confirms it

According to the SB and my memory Mathieu didn't actually hold at all in the final set. :help:

Unless he had some kind of injury which prevented him from serving properly, such as a nagging shoulder injury, this kind of serving display won't keep him in the top 20.

 Mathieu and Gasquet in the space of two weeks have shown in matches against Verdasco why they are never likely to to fulfill their potential.

i don't get how you can play such sublime tennis for two sets and such utterly abysmal tennis for the next three :o

I like Verdasco because he's left handed though so i'm not that annoyed by the result.

Well with players like Verdasco and Berdych anything can happen but although Bolelli picked up a win today isn't he coming in off an injury? Berdych beat a competent opponent in Gicquel so I will back him to progress. As for Verdasco, I have read what you think of him and I am in agreement that he underperforms often but this Verdasco may not show up next match, it may be a far better player or a worse one.

With players like these the only thing to do is wait and see.

phm still the number one choker on atp tour.

calleri is getting ready w/ his coaches ....they will stay up late...trying to outdo PHM's choke today...look for calleri to win the first 2 sets of his R1 match and go up 5-1 and then choke it away...its his only chance of taking the title away from PHM

Am I ever glad I wasn't around to see how this debacle scoreline happened :o Tired or not, PHM clearly had this match in hand after two sets and let it get away from him yet again, as he has in the past :banghead: I'd love to see evidence that Verdasco outplayed him or somehow got extremely 'lucky' from the third set onwards but I doubt it will be forthcoming...

Huge choke. Though he was probably tired, and I suspect his arm wasnt feeling 100%, as he didnt win a service game over the last like, hour of the match. :retard: Oh, Paulo. Get some rest now and play well to end the season.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure most of us considered this match a tossup at best - but it's hard to see that Mathieu was up two sets and reportedly a break or two in the third without drawing some harsh but not totally baseless conclusions

PHM actually admitted he had choked in this match by being too shy.

On the other side, I understand why some may defend him concerning the choke as it has turned into it every time he loses a tight match. Sometimes, some seem to forget that Paulo simply loses the timing or isn't able the maintain the level of intensity he puts in his matches. And that he lacks some plan B when the opponent raises his level or finds a solution.
